: Buying a Barbie!

now this is a good one...

some argue that a hot plate is a hot plate...but is a honda anything like a suzuki? i think not...

i have a 3 burner "Beefeater" aussie owned and made, the rolls royce of barbecues if you may....

now when i think back i could have saved myself $400 or so and got something cheaper...rinnai make a good barbie webber also but thats getting expensive again...

a good barbee will be one where the igniter ignites every time, the dispersion of heat is good and it wont rust and fall apart, the trolley will take to being pushed around the wheels wont fall off....etc etc..

you can get a way with a barbee for $400 or so but it wont be a real keeper until you are spending bout $600....i know many will disagree but it boils down to how often you plan to use it and how you like your food.

i have a hot plate and a grill, also comes with a hood....and the gas bottle can be stored in teh trolley.

http://www.gixxer.com/uploads/1042689548.JPG

need to look at what sort of coating the plates are made of and whether the barbee has been powdercoated or just sprayed...

i also got bits of bling bling as you can see too images/icons/grin.gif

i could go on for every, but a friendly barbee stockist should be able to help you....barbees galore have decent stuff, but if u can go to a specialised outdoor sorta store they could probably tell you more about it....

I know there are differences but trying to find a bbq dealer who just doesn't say - "ours is better then theirs so buy it" isn't easy.

There is supposed to be a difference in some of the plates but I'm buggered if I can tell the difference. I was looking at a BeefMaster 6 burner for $599 (down from $699). Yeah the trolley was just your run of the mill trolley, nothing special but as far as I can tell as long as it rolls and doesn't fall to bits then it should be ok right??

How do I tell which plates are better than others? Some of the hoods have different hinging systems too but I get different opinions for different bbq dealers depending on what bbq they are trying to sell me! BASTARDS!!

Some of them now have these crazy grills underneath the hot plates to supposedly disperse heat better. One salesman said you need heat beads on top of these another one said you didn't, blah blah

AAARRGGGHHH!!! I'm losing my mind here!!

as far as which plates are better...i cant remember images/icons/tongue.gif ceramic coated ones are meant to be the shiznit...

as far as hinges go...do the open close test images/icons/tongue.gif also look at teh tray thing that is attached to the hood does it hit the hood when open?

hey! i got an idea!....go look at a beefeater! any one of their bbq's, and use it as a benchmark...and compare its feel and specifications with others out there....anything beefeater i think is the bomb, so you can use it to compare with others.....

do you really need 6 burners? could cook for the whole of WA with a bbq that big images/icons/tongue.gif

and those heat dispersal thingies work! i have them on mine (no beads) if you were here u could take mine for a test ride...then u can see the difference hehee....oh well, not much else i can say i dont think....

I don't think I could afford a back yard big enuf to put one of those in. I think Nelly Furtado would go for you if you had one of those images/icons/grin.gif

One of the sales guys said that it was better than the other (more sturdy) looking type while another sales guy said the opposite. I have no idea who is talking shit or what!

I heard that some of the plates are not cast iron which are supposedely the better plates. At one bbq store I was at I mentioned a specific bbq and he said the plates were no good even though they looked and felt exactly the same (to me anyway) as the one he was trying to sell me. BASTARDS!

I will check the BeefEater ones as a comparison though.

As far as 6 burners goes, I hardly ever use the damn grill thing and according to all the sales guys you can't just have all solid plates on these bbq's because there is not enough heat dispersal and the plates will bcukle. Hence the need for a 6 burner bbq to get the plate space I am after (not including the grill section).

I'll try and get some more info on the heat dispersal grill/plate things underneath the cooking plates.
