: Top block frame sliders / knobs are crap

About a year ago a bought a top block kit for my 1000, it had the sliders, pickup knobs, bar ends and foot pegs.

I've got my bike in pieces to do my 12,000 service\clean up and noticed a crack on my left slider bracket.

These are the ones that do not require cuting of the fairing as they have a little plate that joins the engine mount to the slider to clear the fairing. Its the little brackets that has the crack in it.

I grabbed the slider and noticed it was also bending on the crack... I HAVE NEVER DROPPED THE BIKE.

What a piece of shit! If i dropped the bike this would have done nothing! how on earth could it crack with no stress on it apart from engine vibration.

I'll make up a new bracket now (a proper one that wont crack) over the weekend. I thought about taking it back but they would probably replace it with similar crap!!!!

Any way, keep away from top block frame sliders, and also be weary when you have bits and pieces that are painted, think to yourself, how crap must the material in this be that they could not polish it (ie they paint it to cover up all the crap)

Yes, im a little pissed off here

The good thing is you caught it before something happened.

ive only ever used and do highly reccomend Australias own Oggy Knobs! they came with my first bike i crashed with them then replaced them with the same ones cos i felt they were truly that good....ive seen a few others, some of which may be better looking but i dont think they will crash and protect like the oggy knobs have for me....

while im at it....i have a set of unused oggy knobs from my 98 SRAD ive offered it to Zed, but i dont thikn its a straight fit...and since you will be "making" your own brackets and what, not perhaps you want to give me a couple of bob for the ones i have?...up to you, but the offers there images/icons/wink.gif

Be careful with the bolts that come with the orgy knobs for the SRADs. I installed a set on mine, and cause the thread is only engaged a 4-5 turns it has vibrated on both sides and stripped out the mounting threads which are quite soft. One of them even vibrated out and I lost it. Was luck a guy I knew had a right left over from a LHS slide. Anyway had to get longer bolts and locktite them in. They've only been in a couple of months so I'm still keeping a close eye on them.

Spent last night a my girlfriends fathers factory (lets call her that as we are dealing with the dad here..) and made up a new proper bracket for me. Hopefully this one wont crap.

By the way, the way the crack went, he reckons probalbly 10-20 others (min) made either side of my one would also be fucked. If you have em, check em. Even hit em with a hammer to see if they crack on you!

I'll put this one back on for now, but thanks nolz.

Bolts seem plenty long with these, but I dont really trust their quality...

While I was there i thought i'ld seee if i could polish the heel guards. They will be done on the weekend. I'll show everyone at the 27 feb ride day

i just read a post by gravel surfer saying frame sliders would do more damage to a bikes frame than its worth images/icons/frown.gif so many things to do not do then do again....although from my experience they have saved me alot of money and i crashed at a not so slow pace...ill take my chances with them i think...probably dependes alot on the impact.

time to plant that money tree i think!

Coming down from a high side then would be when a frame slider would damage the frame. Frame sliders are of value exactly as the name suggest, when low siding, specially at the track where the distance to ground is probably going to be at a minimum when the tyres let go.

hmmm,

I read gravels reply. I will admit damage can occur. I even know someone that slid on the road (cbr600) and the slider snagged on a pot hole. That bent the frame.

My question. (considering I almost took off the sliders for good a few days ago, but since it cost me nothing to make a new bracket i thought i'll put them on)

On the gox 1000 wouldn't there be less chance of the slider bending the frame than other bikes as on this one it goes into the engine mount and frame? This would make it even stronger as it gets support from both?

Another question, could a bike dropping after the rear highslides (when the bike snapps) be enough to bend the frame if it landed on the slider? (just out of interest)

Thanks
