you'll be wanting CE Approved armour. and spend the extra for a well known brand.
back protectors can sometimes be slotted in to your jacket if the jacket has a pocket for it, but bare in mind that that wont cover your tailbone.
the best type are worn under the leathers. you get just back protectors which are held in place usually by elastic and velcro straps. you can also get one piece complete upper body armour, which is what i have. It goes under my leathers and fits nice and snug to make sure it doesnt move about if its ever needed.

Just got teknic 7 plate back protector. It doesn't feel all that good. Not sure how safe it is yet, but it's decently slim, so fits nicely under jacket.

I just learned the the top rated Forcefield back protector is now being rebadged as the Joe Rocket Speedmaster in the US. I've used hard ones (Brokeass Mountain Humor), but may switch this season.

Well I be dam!! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif The T Pro Forcefield was my pick after doing some research. It not only gives up CE certified level 2, it is thin as a dime!! Glad to see I am not the only one that thinks the T Pro Forcefield is the chit!! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
And that makes mine a collector's item.... http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I crash tested one of these last April in t1 @ Summit Point and it worked as it was supposed to. Long story short I flew about 55' from point of impact and, according to corner workers, I was 20'+ in the air at my peak. I landed in a pile of boulders on my back. I had serious bruising from the rivets which were driven through the pad into my back but I "walked" away with no permenent damage.
These are not CE approved though and you are taking Teknics word and reputation that they are good. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

This is the jacket I'm looking at right now. It has a pocket for a C.E. spine protector and has C.E. shoulder pads.
