Hmm, so this flip up helmet phenomena seems to be pervasive...are they safe as a concept?
Further than that, what is the safest flip up helmet out.
HJC CL's helmets are flip up but range in the $170 price range...1/3 of the cost of the Shoei's, does price necessarily equal safetly or are you paying for name brand?
What are your opinions on the differences?

I agree it'd be pretty idiotic to ride with it flipped up.
I think it be convenient for communication when group riding or events at the beaches. If you're riding with a group of people and you stop at a light you can just flip it up and talk and then snap it down when the light turns green. No worrying about yelling at the top of your lungs.
I sometimes stop in parking lots to take/make calls also so all I have to do is flip it up and put it on speaker phone to talk.
The key is easier communication.
That HJC opening up concerns me though....anybody got more insight on that?

I wouldn't trust one in a front/chin impact.

Well, I ended up getting an HJC CL-Max Flip up...I don't like the way the chin strap feels, but just as predicted I'm able to ride and still communicate with others without yelling. Not to mention stop and talk to all the girls I pull up next to at intersections.
I guess I'll let ya'll know when its been battle tested...although I pray that that day never comes.

anything that adds extra hinges and clips, i.e. bendable detachable parts is cause for concern. I would NEVER buy this... ever

Who will laugh at you because you look like a dork... http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I've had a flip-up helmet once, a Schuhberth Concept. Sold it and got a full face instead. Quality was great and the mechanism very smooth but it was much heavier than a full face. I never used the flip-up feature because the chin piece threw the balance way off when up - only opened it when taking it on and off. I never really trusted it to hold up in a crash.
Then there was the noise - the small gap between the chin piece and the helmet itself produced a lot of turbulence... The only helmet I've ridden with that had more noise was another flip-up...
Plus you really did look like a dork with it flipped up http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
But now that you have it, find out how it works for you http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
