: training wheels
reds man 02-17-2006, 03:56 AM this is a really dumb question but im sure someone will help. I have an 03 gsx-r 750 and i grew up on bikes and quads. well now my GF has bought a 02 gsx-r 600 and she has never ridin alone. i let her putt around a lot a few times but she scares the hell out of me. she isnt going to get to ride for a month or so due to weather and she is taking a class here in town i am just looking for some kinda help with her. i think its cool she wants to ride with me and not always on back but i dont want to see here hurt because of incompatence. i have looked for training wheels as bad as that sounds and im almost to the point of fab'ing some. any help is greatly appreciated. shes hard headed and she is insisting on riding http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
Hammer 4 02-17-2006, 06:12 AM Your prolly not gonna like this answer, but it is what you need to hear.
That 600 is way to much bike for someone that's never riden before on the street, even riding some limited dirt won't give you the skills to handle a 600...be it a gixxer, Honda...ect.
Best thing you can, or could have done, was to get her a Smaller bike, like a Kawi ex 250, or 500...and I'd vote for the 250, cuzz it's smaller, and much more user friendly than any 600.
And, as far as taking classes, i.e. like the MSF course, it'll help a tad, still it takes awhile to get use to the 100 hp the 600 makes.
Do her, and yourself a favor, sell that gix and get her a smaller bike...she'll thank you in the long run..
reds man 02-17-2006, 06:29 AM oh i know thats the right answer i tried to talk her down to katana but she wouldnt have it. its all about the looks to her. but im going to have her read what you said and i have some pretty good videos to show her so she sees what can happen. but thanks

That prolly the #1 reason why new riders buy sportbikes, cuzz of the looks..
Even the Katana wouldn't be the best bike..but it's better than that 600....
Best of luck to ya...and her
RussZTT 02-17-2006, 07:48 AM Fuggit..I'll be the first

Valhalla 02-17-2006, 08:08 AM try and find a gs500f it has the sportbike looks and is a great bike for starters.
if shes set on a 600. look into the sv 650/sv650s it makes less power and is still in the 600 range. its a v-twin so it will have a less touchy throtle and be a little more forgiving if she gets too excited and opens the throttle too much.
fatlip 02-18-2006, 03:24 PM Get a YSR 50 and let her put around town on that. Its street legal too.
reds man 02-20-2006, 03:57 AM ok well i took her to a huge empty lot sunday and she was doing pretty good. shes got the start and stop and left right slpw speed turns. im trying to get her to think about objects in the road and people pulling out in front of her now.i was riding beside her ion mine and told her watch out car backing out. she stopped just fine but as soon as she stopped it fell over. didnt hurt the bike gave her a lil scare and got me out of the cold for the rest of the day. thanks for the help but shes hell bent on the gsxr 600. going to lower it this weekend.
Seriously man, you need to bitchslap your girlfriend back to reality before she hurts or kills herself... Try to convince her to put the Gix away and get a smaller beater to learn on - if you want her to survive...
fatlip 02-21-2006, 03:50 PM Lower it the same hieght front and back or you srew up the handling.
reds man 02-22-2006, 10:48 AM yeah i understand the lowering part i know where and how to measure it. thanks though
SPL170db 02-23-2006, 05:08 AM oh i know thats the right answer i tried to talk her down to katana but she wouldnt have it. its all about the looks to her. but im going to have her read what you said and i have some pretty good videos to show her so she sees what can happen. but thanks
Okie dokie then. Well like they say, an ounce of prevention is worth.............ehhhh I forget the rest.
Go buy her a full leather suit and make her wear it. When she dumps the thing you don't want her all rashed up, kinda throws a wrench into the spokes during the intimate times you know. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
puckaveli 02-23-2006, 06:54 AM I don't know if this can be done but isn't there a way to restrict the bike? Maybe a stop on the throttle cable so she can only get 35% throttle or something?
My best friend's girl did the same thing. He was going to buy her a $1,000 250 ninja as her first bike but she wanted to look cool and went to a dealership and they sold her a R6, she doesn't even have a bike temp license. She took him to the dealership to surprise him with "look what I bought"; he about threw the salesman through a window and made them cancel the sale. She was like "I wanted to look cool" he told her "yeah, you'll look great with stiches and road rash on 75% of you body!"
xDJxKLUSIVEx 03-08-2006, 05:11 PM i wouldnt let my girl ride period lol ... my first time ever riding was on the 750 ive got ever rid n e thing but a bicycle before that not even dirt! lol
fridayman 03-08-2006, 11:52 PM ... and i have some pretty good videos to show her so she sees what can happen. but thanks
Don't emphasise this too much though. The last thing you want is for her to get to a tricky situation where she needs all her concentration and a positive attitude, and then all she can think about is crashing (a bit like target fixation, but in her head).
FREAKSK5 04-05-2006, 01:41 AM I agree with SPL, did all you bitches start out on sv650s and ysr50s? I didn't think so. Just make sure you ride with her and teach her everything you know and she will problably be fine. Maybe your just jealous she will hook up with another biker if she hangs out with your buds. I got my WIFE a honda ruckus so she can toot around the block if she wants, she loves it and even gives the kid rides. If she woke up and told me she wanted a gix 600 so she could ride with me she would have one that same day.
IridiumRed 04-27-2006, 10:09 AM You DO like your girlfriend, right??
I mean, I'm wondering if this is one of those "nudge nudge, wink wink, Sure do hope she doesn't get hurt riding that big sportbike........" sorta things?
i mean, if you like her, this isn't a great idea
but on the other hand, if you're sick of taking her shit, its a GREAT idea!!
ATLDave 04-28-2006, 09:57 AM Punch her in the mouth and tell her to learn the right way. The punch will hurt less than the wreck she's headed for. I keeed, I keeed!
I can't believe the parking lot follies haven't checked her hell bent ways. My wife wanted to learn, and the first time she lost control it was a reality check for her. She had that 'if you can do it I can do it too' mentaility. I'm sure she can but she sounds just like your GF... not willing to learn the right way. No one ever handed someone a guitar and said 'now you're a rockstar' did they?
BlkdOutGsxR 04-28-2006, 11:47 AM Kinda a tricky situation, my advise is take it real slow, and I mean reaaaaalllll slow, because I find that if you overload someone with information to look out for, they think to much and forget to do the little stuff. I started on a 95 Cbr, didnt have nearly the power as the new sportbikes, but I felt it was a good learner bike, it allowed me to learn, yet have fun once I got the hang of it. I would just make sure she takes the MSF course, and then if shes comfortable, take it slow..., if shes still shakey, lay down the law, this isnt a case where your gonna feel any better when the "I told you so" moment comes up, so use your best judgement and if you feel its to much for her, and shes not handling it properly, LAY THE LAW DOWN!!!!!
GSXR6BOY 05-21-2006, 12:52 AM I started off on a 600, BUT I knew that I was not going to go fast at first and I didn't. You have to have respect, because it doesn't care what you hit how fast, it will do 40 to 60 doing half a wheelie wether your headed for a wall or not.
No matter how much you think you know when you first start off, you know nothing. She needs to know that and respect that it will take time, and that she should take the time and not chance getting hurt. You should take responsibility and should also talk with her and make sure she realizes how fast something can go wrong, and how much time you don't have to react.
mdumpert 05-29-2006, 07:35 PM women are impossible. it is true that the best thing for her would have been a smaller bike... she already bought too much bike for all the wrong reasons. pray for her i guess.
Tianyu 05-30-2006, 06:45 PM Get the gixxer restricted. In Europe, most countries have 600cc:s restricted to 25kW for younger and unexperienced riders. I guess that would be the solutions since it's just the matter of looks.
The restrictions are usually done by retarding ignition (CDI-box) or having some sort of throttle-stopper with blocks in the intake box. I had one, but I removed immediately when I got the bike
