: Southeast group ride, get in here!!!!!!!

Lets put together a Southeast ride. graemlins/idea.gif I mean not anything soon, but what if we all plan right now to go to Daytona. I know you Florida bros can pick the best place to stay at. I know that a Gixxer.com ride would never happen due to the "thousands" of members. But what if all of us decide right now who will go to Daytona, what hotel might give us a discount rate if we booked the rooms with them by say mid February. My car club meets with the other chapters in other states every six months and we have always had a blast. If it's going to happen it will take lots of planning, starting now. It's just an idea. Think about it, five hundred plus gixxer.com members in one specific area graemlins/cheers.gif . Who knows maybe the other regions will join in on the idea. Let me know what you think..........

I'll be in Daytona this year.... again.... five years and running. Unbelievable time if you haven't been. One hint - last year we made the mistake of not staying on A1 - terrible idea. Traffic is so bad that bikes overheat on the way to the strip (2 miles). We were gonna reserve a room soon so I'm welcome to suggestions...

Another great idea would be a possible IBI!! I used to ride with the Texas Sport Bike Association and they would have two IBI's a Fall and a Spring IBI!!
IBI for those of you who are wondering stands for "Iron Butt Invitational"!! It usually entailed a lot of posting and some organizing ie hotels/restaurant its as easy as just posting contacts for the places and having people make their own reservations and a sore ass by the end of the ride! Last year a large group of us stayed at cabins which was realy nice with five guys pitching in for a cabin.

We would break up into different riding ability groups ie the fast guys, mid level and slow!! A couple of people drove a van as the chase/emergency vehicle! I carried the medic bag which had everything from airsplints to IV's luckily we had no injuries!! I was a great time for all!!!

A central location(with posted maps) was designated for meeting prior to the ride so everyone could link up. Route maps were also passed out incase someone had to stop for some reason and to ensure that you didn't take a wrong turn with a final destination link up point!!

That would be cool to say the DRAGON!

Ok well lets see how many people can say that they will be down. I'm not talking about thirty or fifty, I mean like 150 or more. So spread the word to people you see in other forums. There will be less likely a chance for a hotel to turn down a group that large. And if you guys from florida can name me a few of the larger and better hotels.

I will be there again, already made my reservations on the beach graemlins/la.gif if you want to go you need to make your reservations already cause if you wait til Feb you wont find anything with in 40-50 miles away from Daytona. most people book in October for bikeweek.

It depends on what your idea of "good" is. A couple of years we stayed at a place called The Thunderbird Inn, I think. It wasn't too bad price wise, but it wasn't a Radisson either. I want to say it was around $175 a nite for beachfront - divided between three or four of us, it wasn't too bad.

There is an official website - www.bikeweek.com. (http://www.bikeweek.com.) I just got on and bike week this year is February 28 - March 9. We usually go for a Thurs. thru a Sunday. A whole week is too exhausting and way too expensive. Never been there for the last weekend - too crowded.

Also, my girl works at the holiday inn and get rooms for a huge discount. how many rooms, im not sure. But if a bunch of people want to stay at one hotel im sure that she could call down and get us a good rate at the closest one.

first or second weekend? you pick cause I've never been to either.

Ive always gone the second weekend and loved it. I like that weekend because we end the trip on sunday by going to the superbike race and getting pit passes and the whole 9 yards. After the race its time to head home. Last year i stayed in orlando and actually didnt mind the ride into daytona....had some fun in I-4 headed in. The only problems are the traffic once you get into Daytona. Theres always something going on...last year alot of people met at the Hess station until the cops ran them off. I know LVX and Todd Colbert did some rideing on the back road by the airport if anyones wants to get into that action.

This sounds like a great idea. I live in Orlando about an hour away. Some of the hotels won't allow trailers, so that would have to be a consideration. Also, beachside will probably be a little more expensive. It might be possible to rent out one of the older motels on US1 which is just off the mail strip on the beach. You can actually get a little sleep too. I'd be willing to help out someone to get this thing organized.

Thunderbird is only about a fifteen minute walk from the "action" and is on A1A. There are two Holiday Inn's - one on A1A and one off the interstate. Last year we stayed in the latter and the commute was horrible. Also - the advantage to being within walking distance is so that everyone can still get home without thinking about riding after drinking.

As far as when... I've never been to the last weekend because its always so crowded. Someone else pipe out if you've been at this time. For five years we've went to the first weekend and had plenty of room for our trailers. I can't imagine there'd be anywhere to park a trailer after the first weekend. We'll probably leave the Thursday before it all starts and leave the following Sunday or Monday morning. The only reason I question the second weekend is because I'd want to be sure we could park the trailers somewhere. Thoughts anyone???

I'll check this weekend on a couple of spots and we'll see what we can come up with. Talk to your girl and see if the Holi Inn beachfront is booked yet... images/icons/wink.gif

Gilley -

I don't really know where you're talking about - which older hotels are speaking of? Do you know anyone in that business? Someone mentioned staying in Orlando, but I can't do that. I'd end up spending Friday nite in that alley beside Froggy's. How far from the strip are the hotels you speak of? We need to get something started really, really soon if we're going to do this.

Shzam and Gilley, name one hotel. That will be the one we stay at. I have my girl looking into the Holiday Inn Oceanfront tonight while she's at work. I'll let you know how that turns out probably tommorow. If you guys could pick one more I'll start calling and demand a discount images/icons/mad.gif .

Here is a map of Daytona and Daytona Beach. There are some older motels along Ridgewood Ave (US1) between US92 and Beville Road which would have some room for trailers. There is also a new Days Inn (less than a year old) on Ridgewood between US92 and Bellevue Ave that is pretty nice too. I stayed there during Biketoberfest this past October.

As you can see from the map, this is not on the beach. The beach is about 3/4 to 1 mile away. But this area is a little quieter at night so you can sleep. It is also about right in the middle of all of the major action. Main Street is to the north and east and the speedway (track) is to the west. It's not a long haul to anywhere. If you stay on the beachside, you will fight traffic to go everywhere. Staying on US1 allows you to take back roads to get where you want to go easier. Plus, some of the hotels on the beachside WILL NOT allow trailers. But there is a large U-Haul dealer on US92 that has a lot of room and may allow you to park your trailer there for a small fee. I parked mine there last bike week, but it was a U-Haul trailer anyway.

If you want to stay close to Main Street so you can go drink and walk back to the hotel room, US1 would not be the place to stay. US1 isn't far to ride to from Main Street but you wouldn't want to walk there from Main Street. It all depends on what you guys want in the place where you stay.

Staying in Orlando isn't a good idea because it's too far (about 60 miles) to go back and forth every day. I live in Orlando and I even stay in Daytons. I'll be riding my bike though so no need to worry about a trailer for me.

You guys post what you want in a hotel and how much you want to spend. Maybe I could do my part for the site and look into some lodging options. Personally, I don't want to stay on the beach because I like to sleep at night and I don't like sitting in traffic all the time. Maybe I'm just getting too old.

Here's a more expanded map of the Daytona Area so you can see where the track is in relation to the beach. The track is right next to the airport at the left of the picture. You can also see a little of the airport on the left side of the top map.

hey guy's, i would deffinetly be up for meeting up somewhere and cruising out to daytona. it'll be my first time out there (with a bike anyways:)) i will most likely only be able to get out there on the weekend, but i have probobly 10-15 guy's that'll ride down with me. anything setup for a meetup for everyone comin down or anything?

JereGSXR
12-09-2002, 03:04 PM
you may also want to check into hotels in new smyrna beach as well. it's about a 10-20 minute drive from daytona beach up A1A. and it tends to be a little bit easier to get into that area, as well as pricing might be a little bit easier as well which is always a plus graemlins/thumbup.gif

Dan750

Nothing setup yet. Called around to a few hotels and whatever you do, don't stay at the Days Inn on S. Ridgewood Ave. As a heads up they are charging $200 a night and a seven day minimum! graemlins/icon_wtf.gif For those of you multipling in your heads, your right,$1400 for the week. And the lady I talked to said thats not for the rooms with two beds. Anyone around Daytona that can call a couple of hotels and see if they can get us rooms for the 28 of Feb through the 3 of March. (By us I mean Gixxer.com) Any place that is willing to set aside about 15 to 20 rooms until say January 10. One month and we can sell the rooms to Gixxer.com members. This will work but these places need to see a face and that face needs to know where the good hotels are. Budget-wise, I'm not sure what everyone can afford, but if $120 a night is too much then speak up. I don't think it will be. But thats a good price to start on I think. Oh and if your one of the ones looking in Daytona, there is another Days Inn on the beach that still have some pretty cheap rooms but no one would answer the phone when I called. But there's one lead. Let's see what we can do by the end of next week. After that it will start to become a lost cause.

Tee shirts could be made up easily -- Someone could make up a logo and post it here. Then you could download it and copy it to the T-shirts using your injet printer. Thats how we made our shirts - came out really good. Office Depot has the transfer iron ons for 12 bucks for a 7 pack - something like that.

Ive stayed here just about every year. they pretty much always have rooms available and the rooms are great and at much better prices than staying in Daytona. The ride is about 30 minutes with traffic and 15 miuntes with no traffic at night. They are in LakeMary, FL

Well as far as the rooms go, it's every man for himself. No hotels are going to let us get a bunch of rooms. They need money upfront and most people will be staying at different dates and areas that they are used to. Sorry fellas I tried but maybe another time.

I like the idea of meeting up once we get there. I'm sure that it is too early to decide when and where to meet. I am curious as to how many people will be coming down for the first weekend and how many for the second. I'd like to go when there are more of us gixxer's around. Guess its time for a poll in the General bike talk forum.
