: Tired of sexist men in motorcycle arena
rowdyrednekgurl 01-05-2006, 12:00 PM Omg... my hubby just got his new Cycle World magazine... and he pointed out an ad on the last page to me ( he just loves getting me fired up..lol). It was an ad for a new motorcycle company, Vento. It has a woman riding a bike and has a quote of "I want to ride beside you.. not behind you." The problem I have with this is this bike has only 24 hp and a top speed of 85 mph. It is like the ad is saying that women can only handle riding something like this. So that got my attitude up and I wrote an email to the people at Vento and Cycle World explaining my feeling on this type of advertising. Vento emailed me back and I wanted to share with my fellow female riders the email....
Dawn:
Thank you for your email.
Your opinion is welcome and in any way we try to degraded women's.
Maybe you are an expericed rider for many years but there is a lot of woman's that don't have a motorcycle and they don't want to spend a fortune on buying one.
This motorcycle is an entry level 250cc for young riders or women's because it is not as powerful as your motorcycle and is a very light and easy to handle vehicle.
Again thank you for your opinion

Subject: Degrading advertisement
I just saw your ad in the new Cycle World magazine. It is the one on the back cover with a picture of a woman rider with the qutoe "I want to ride beside you... not behind you." First of all, I feel this ad is degrading to women based on the fact that this bike has no horsepower and top speed is only 85 mph. Do you believe that women can only handle 24 hp??? or speeds less than 85 mph???
If a person riding this bike with anyone else on a "real bike", they will be left in the wind...
I am a woman rider... and my first motorcycle had 3 times the horsepower than this particular bike and guess what I could handle it....
I don't beleive you should target this bike to women only or you may find yourself lacking buyers due to the degrading message you are portraying.
Thank you
Dawn
So what do ya'll think about this?????
gixxsexR 01-05-2006, 12:13 PM i think that *most women would actually want that kind of bike. being smaller and 'new'.
i think that the company knows that and thats why they made the ad. i dont think they meant it as degrading. Sure there are women out there like yourself and 750dev that want more and can handle more bike.... but again *most.. i think they are just advertising to the demand.
rowdyrednekgurl 01-05-2006, 12:27 PM I think I might agree with that.. if they could even master some type of decent response back to me....
But if they are promoting this bike as a new rider bike... what is wrong with promoting it to MEN and WOMEN????
I just think it sucks that when they promote any motorcycle ads to women it is just basic bikes or pink or clothes that fit a size 1 girl.....
I think it is time that motorcycle promoters realize they are not promoting to the AVERAGE female motorcycle rider....
SPL170db 01-05-2006, 12:45 PM That's not sexist at all. They are catering to a segment of the motorcycling population that wants/needs to learn on something that is not at intimidating and dangerous. Hell, you can still get killed just as easily on a 24hp bike doing 85 mph as you can on a 150hp bike doing 85 mph.
Shit, I think alot of guys out there should have started off on bikes like this. I only wish the few that I knew that made 1000's their first bike would have done that...................they might still be with us today if they had http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Grandevil 01-05-2006, 05:49 PM i think that *most women would actually want that kind of bike. being smaller and 'new'.

Thanks for the compliment Nate http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif I love when my riding gets complimented http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
But the problem is these companies Do keep marketing to these tiny little girls who think riding is "cool".
I am sick of looking at pink riding gear and baby blue gear and gear that doesn't fit and jackets with bows n shit on them.
I want to kill every little stupid clueless girl who goes for that stuff. It gives REAL riders such a bad name. When motorcycle manufacturers start producing pink bikes I won't bitch about pink gear. But fuck.
This stuff gets me so mad I can't even type straight or say what i want. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
o0otriciao0o 01-05-2006, 11:40 PM I do agree with you that is does come off as very sexist....it could be a good learner bike, but they shouldn't sound like it's what women NEED.
As far as the gear and apparel goes, I would rather see a girl in a pink jakcet with bows then in no jacket at all. I personally wear a mens ICON because I feel safer in it, but in the Pcola area, it's not rare to see a girl (riding or on back) wearing daisy dukes, a halter top and flip-flops. I'll never forget the day I seen some girl riding a busa in that gear to include no helmet. WTF?!?! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/wtf.gif
Grandevil 01-06-2006, 05:46 AM I don't care if they wear no gear. I will ride without a jacket in the summer time..stupid I know, but so what. I'll bitch when i go down ya know lol.
But seriously. In the world of motorcycles it's like we're still supposed to subscribe to these gender roles where women wear pink and look cute. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif Kind of like how they have flower vases in VW bugs http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif Yeah that's the last thing I want under hard braking...water and plants flying everywhere...not that I would ever be caught dead actually riding/driving a bug. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/rotflol.gif
Blitzergixxer 01-06-2006, 08:57 AM Don't you think you are putting a bit too much into this?
Suzuki Chelly 01-06-2006, 09:35 AM Maybe it is mildly sexist, but women are the biggest untapped market as far as new riders go. As far as selling that to men, you'd better have one hell of a marketing department, the selling ice to eskimos type. Most men that get a bike with those looks have egos. They won't go for a small bore bike. They need something to brag about besides a low prices and high MPG. They're aiming for the women because you don't have that same ego talking, and are more likely to get a sensible bike to learn on.
As far as the 85mph top speed, so what. My cousin is a big guy and rides a Harley, and it'll only get him to 85mph. My dad rides Ducatis, and it's a cold day in hell that he breaks 70mph.
I'd consider something like that for my mom's first bike. She needs something light with a low seat height. But since my dad rides Ducs, she's pretty well set on a Monster 620. If she ever gets around to doing her MSF class, then we'll find her one and lower it down for her.

Engloid 01-06-2006, 12:06 PM I think it is time that motorcycle promoters realize they are not promoting to the AVERAGE female motorcycle rider....
I think you are so busy crying about being offended that you missed the point of the entire ad. It is clearly geared towards NEW woman riders. You know...riding "next to you" indicates on her own bike, and riding "behind you" indicates riding on the same bike as a passenger.
Now, the real question here is... are you so busy being offended that you'd rather see them marketing a gsxr1000 to new female riders?
Further, they most likely aren't wanting to advertise to the "average" female rider....as those that are not average spend money too. Surely you don't suggest that we begin only to make clothes for average sizes, and market to those people only.
Quit trying to be the victim and live your own life without worrying about stupid magazine ads.
SuzukiriderTC 01-06-2006, 12:25 PM well, i still think the balance of power is still in womens' favor.
i'm going out to the bar tonight, and i'm actually taking MONEY with me. how many women have to do THAT when they go out?
and i also don't have women lined up to help me change my oil, tires, plastics, spark plugs, etc...for free. i'd say women have it pretty damn good, so cry me a river LOL.

GSXR6BOY 01-06-2006, 12:47 PM Hello Girls, http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
Sorry to post in the girls forum http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif, but I don't believe this is sexist at all. Do you think the average woman can handle a 350lb + bike let alone one that can accelerate quicker than any car worth less then 80 grand?
I'm not trying to start anything here, but I know if I was my girlfriend I wouldn't be able to handle the 600 that I have now simply because of the weight alone.
As long as the bike doesn't look like complete ass, I think this would appeal to many women just like the ad is tailored to. Plus it is a great learner. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Who cares what color someone else’s jacket is? Most women like girly things because we are girls...plain and simple...we are girls...we like what is pretty and cute...and that is what makes us DIFFERENT from guys.
750devil...I am not trying to put you down with what I am about to say...but when I read your posts...I thought you were a guy, until I read one about you not having one - you sound like a guy. You talk like a guy, drive a 'man's' truck, curse, talk about sex, etc..just like a guy. You seem to be the only female on this site that talks and acts like a guy...guys don't want to date guys.
So now I am defending women...I wear a black jacket because it is sliming… but if I wanted to wear a pink one...does that mean I am a clueless bitch? Who cares...I have a life and it doesn't bother me whether someone wears a pink, blue, purple, whatever jacket. And who cares if you are a REAL rider? What does that mean? Who actually says that? Tell me about who you are when you are not defining yourself as a REAL rider.
Maybe if you were more secure with who you were, you wouldn't get so mad at people or things that have nothing to do with you. Who are you proving yourself to?

rowdyrednekgurl 01-06-2006, 10:40 PM Ok I could care less what color the riding gear.... but I know at 5'10" and not even close to being fat....can post pic to prove.... I can NOT even come close to fitting in any of the women's gear.... I have 3 jackets and they are all men's apparel... I couldn't even come close to finding any pants to wear...
A group of us plan on going to the track to ride... guess who gets to sit on the sideline because I can't find any leathers to fit me....
On SuzukiriderTC's point, that is men's fault for trying to buy into some girl's pants... I always take money to the bar... and I have probably had less than 5 drinks bought for me in all the times I have gone out... because imagine that.. I make my own money.. and do quite well on my own for that.... and guess what... I have even bought guy's drinks when I have gone out...
On the oil change thing.... I work in the car business... so I get them done at work... but my dad taught me how to take care of a car.. and back in my poor days.. I have changed oil, batteries, alternators, brakes, tires.. you name it....
So if you men continue to do these things for women in hopes to get in their pants... sounds like it is the man's issue not the woman's if you ask me.....
In the end... all I am saying is I wish the motorcycle promoters would remember about us OTHER women that ride

I want to thank Engloid for explaining to me the difference between riding beside and behind you.. because I am not sure that I could of figured that out.. that is SOOOO much harder to understand that me getting my Master's degree in Accounting none the less... but I thank you for clarifying that for me...

That's good, but surely you realize that you are in the minority, and it's not a large minority at all. Why do you think that the gear comanies want to spend $Xmil to market to your type when they can spend the same $Xmil and market to the majority, which is still somewhat of an untapped market? In other words, the rate of return is much better for them when marketing to the majority. Didn't that Masters in Accounting teach you this stuff? Have any marketing classes along the way? Look into the old classic bell curves and shit, and you will see that you're way out on the tail end, not in the middle.
In the end... all I am saying is I wish the motorcycle promoters would remember about us OTHER women that ride
I'm sure they do, but for now, they all seem to be trying to get in the #1 position for the majority of the market. After there's a clear winner on that, they will likely start spending a bit more to market to the minority groups.

Your post originated with you complaining that they did, now you say you wish they would?
When the last time you saw any ads promoting any bike of size to women??? And guess what there are plenty of women out there riding bikes bigger than a 600...
Yeah, probably about 5% of all sold??? Surely they went over this stuff with you in school. Would you call it efficeient spendage of your funds if you put out a flyer in your neighborhood, for a maid service, yet you printed it in Japanese? Hell no!!! Then why do you think the major motorcycle companies should put out ads that will only appeal to about 5% of the people that might be interested in buying a bike?
I know it sucks for you, and I know it pisses you off, but I just don't see why you can't be more understanding of THEIR position on this. It's like voting for the president...the guy I vote for may not win, but I might have to understand that the majority of people disagreed with me.
SuzukiriderTC 01-07-2006, 01:22 AM i'll concede the point that by marketing in the manner they did, the manufacturer in question definitely decided to self-identify the bike as a "woman's" bike. seriously, how many guys do u think will go into the dealer asking about it after seeing the ad?
but, this is america...men ride big bikes, women ride little ones. like i said in the other thread...we should have graduated licensing so that BEGINNERS ride little bikes and experienced people ride bigger ones.

Pot meet kettle
YOU agreed the marketing was sexist did you not? Now you're trying to tell me my opinion is somehow not worthy? http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/bs.gif
Yes it is insulting, as if I'm supposed to feel bad because I drive a truck. You know why i got the truck?
#1 because I like it, it's fast, it's classy (for a truck) and believe it or not it holds its value because it's a limited production vehicle.
and more importantly
#2 I did not want to be dependant on some guy OR ANYONE to move my bike when I wanted to ride somwhere far away like Deal's Gap. I don't want to owe a guy anything or feel helpless. I hate being "one upped" because I NEED someone else to do something.
If being independent makes me a man...then fuck it. I'd rather be masculine than helpless and needy. It's nice to know that some people are still prescribing to sexist attitudes and traditional gender roles. Even better that it's women doing it.
You make it sound as if a woman's only worth can be found in how well she attracts a man instead of just being worth something because she's a person with her own life and own goals. My goal in life is not to attract a man. And guess what, most men like that I ride and drive a truck and don't get offended when the word FUCk is slung around.
And when I said "real rider" just to clarify I mean someone who is not about the image and looking cute and having cute little girly thigns everywhere so people can see them, I didn't mean it in a deragatory way (unlike your comments). "Real" riders don't care if they look like shit or if the pants are a little saggy in teh ass because they are comfortable to ride in. They don't just ride on warm sunny days, they ride because they can't NOT ride. That is my opinion.
Engloid 01-07-2006, 03:43 AM The weight of the bike only matters of you're trying to bench press it.
Or if you lay it down, as beginners are much more likely to do.
have you seen how small the MotoGP and AMA riders are? Those guys are shorter and skinnier THAN ME and I can handle my 400lb 750 just fine thanks. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
They're not quite beginners either. Not only that, but if they lay the bike down, they usually have corner workers there that help them pick it back up.
Uncle Shittypants 01-07-2006, 03:47 AM yes im willing to bet, most females wont be able to pick up there bike if they drop it. Not by thereself
Grandevil 01-07-2006, 03:52 AM No usually not I agree. But there are usually people nearby if a bike is dropped or crashed.
And chances are if you "crash" the bike won't be ridable anyways.
And for the record I dropped my bike one in the parking lot (the old 04 that was stolen) and I did pick it back up by myself.
Don't you think you are putting a bit too much into this?

Now she's just voicing her opinion and even making fun of some of the replies. Read through the thread without looking at names and see which posts are nothing but drama starters...

Most women would have left their bike laying, and gotten help. Another point I though of is that with something like a 250 Rebel, the center of gravity is lower. This makes it easier to hold up, and also a lot easier to pick up when it falls.
I'm sure it took a good straining, as I've had to do it myself and it sucks!!! Overreacting to a situation or something is drama. I'm not alone in thinking that getting upset about something so menial as the mentioned advertisement is overreacting.
In case you didn't get my point yet, the drama queen is the initiator of drama, not the respondent....ALWAYS. Otherwise, they'd not be called the drama queen...as they make the dramatic situation.
Grandevil 01-07-2006, 05:30 AM I don't think anyone was starting drama by posting their OPINION. Drama is attacking a single member.
SuzukiriderTC 01-07-2006, 06:07 AM u know, i hang out with a woman who was raised in a family of boys. it's the most annoying thing in the world that she has to prove capability at every turn. it gets old way fast. she takes what you say in the most gender negative manner possible and then runs herself into the ground to prove herself. like a wounded puppy who bites u when you're trying to rescue it. i can imagine her snapping at me if i asked her if she needed help loading her bike into a van. i'm asking cuz it's a pain in the ass, not because i think she's a woman and can't do it. i'd ask a guy if he needed help just the same.
most guys wish we could have a woman who is "one of the boys" but this chick is so far gone it makes u sick. we are DIFFERENT...but not BETTER THAN each other. stop looking at the world through the funhouse mirror of gender crisis because ultimately nobody wants to hang around the "eternal victim."

I'm not like that I never ask for anything in return. Actually a friend of mine still owes me $200 that he said he'd pay me back when I helped him out getting his bike fixed...but he's a great friend of mine so I just shrugged and said to hell with it. He babysits my cat sometimes lol.

NJs girl 01-07-2006, 10:06 AM There is a difference between men and women, whether we like it or not...and I like to be different than guys...because I am not a guy (I smell nicer and don’t have facial hair)
That ad catered to their target market. Most women can only handle a small bike, if that. I ride a 600 but I do not have one girlfriend that could handle ANY bike. We are made differently...I don't see anything wrong with that. My girlfriends think it is humorous that I ride a bike...they make fun of me...I don't care. I ride because I enjoy being on the bike.
I also have a black jacket because that was the only one that I could find to fit me (Shift-men's) If the pink icon fit me I would wear it...I would wear a baby blue one – if it protected me…who cares what color it is.
What is wrong with liking female things and colors? It is all a gender stereotype but they exist because the majority of women like pretty things, don't ride bikes and CAN'T handle a large bike.
So...the ad catered to their target market whether we females think it is sexist or not, we are the few that ride bikes and that is just the way it goes…nothing on this earth is fair…it is life…we have to deal with it.
750devil…never said your opinion is not worthy…you are one of the few women that thinks like a guy…nothing wrong with that. You seem to identify more with the TYPICAL male stereotype that with a female, so that would put you in the minority.
Has nothing to do with being independent. I own my own company, ride bikes, and like female things…I am independent…but I agree there is a difference between the sexes…it is in our DNA and we can’t change it. Liking girly things does not mean we are needy and dependent…we are all different and trying to exist in this world.
Uncle Shittypants 01-07-2006, 10:08 AM I like girly girls

Grandevil 01-08-2006, 02:33 PM Liking the color pink is not in our DNA.

I was interrupted by the youngest, cockiest asshole in the place. He said, "ummm, you think you can handle something like this?". I didn't even answer him, i rolled my eyes and went on talking to my friend. Then i got interrupted again with, "did you just come here to fuck with us?" THAT was the LAST STRAW. 1tripleO 07-13-2006, 05:04 AM actually porn and RIDING ability go hand in hand:rolleyes
R.U. Sirius 07-13-2006, 11:01 AM Most women would have left their bike laying, and gotten help. Another point I though of is that with something like a 250 Rebel, the center of gravity is lower. This makes it easier to hold up, and also a lot easier to pick up when it falls.
I'm sure it took a good straining, as I've had to do it myself and it sucks!!! I'm about average size, at about 180lbs, and the couple times I've dropped a bike, I wished somebody was there to help...but was also glad, or they'd have seen me drop the bike. Still yet, it felt like my intestines were about to have an "out of body" experience.
That's cause you did it wrong... :biggrin I've seen a skinny weak 72 year old man pick up a goldwing by himself before... It's all about the leverage you effort on the bike. Pull the bar to the inside, get your ass on the tank and use your legs to lift it... Even the weakest person can stand a bike up like that.
Jimmy 2 Times 07-13-2006, 02:34 PM Omg... my hubby just got his new Cycle World magazine... and he pointed out an ad on the last page to me ( he just loves getting me fired up..lol).

What do i think? I think that you should go get me a beer, and make me a fucking sandwich women..........now
