: Getting Ready for First Track Day

Here's what I'm doing to get ready for my first TrackDay --- BUDGET STYLE!! images/icons/grin.gif

Costs

TrackDay - FREE (I won it images/icons/tongue.gif images/icons/grin.gif )

Tires - $125, for D208 TakeOffs - Bid for it on eBay, from a guy who is local, so I save about $25-$30 in shipping... What do you think? (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1863200000&rd=1)

Leathers - Well I have the upper portion of a SPIDI Suit (kept in mind that I might need it one day for a TrackDay). So all I needed was leather pants. Called up a friend who was about my size and borrowed some Teknic Leather Pants. Had them sow-up the full zipper -- total cost $25.

I needed some kneepucks -- buying them used for less than $10 images/icons/grin.gif

Boots - I currently use Sidi Sympatex Road Boots (http://www.motorcycle.com/mo/mcbeware/sympatex.html). I know these are generally adequate for a first time Track Day, but I'm debating whether to get actual Race Boots.

I'm choosing between these SIDI Vertebras - about $185 total (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1860593193) or a new SPIDI XP-1, $275 total (http://www.lockhartphillipsusa.com/xp1boots.html), or a SPIDI VR-1 Boots, $185 total (http://www.lockhartphillipsusa.com/vr1boot.html) --- my question is.... should I???

I could also get these NRC Case Covers (http://hisideracing.safeshopper.com/images/b00is9my.jpg) for $100.

So, I can keep the whole thing under $200...

or get new SPIDI Leather Pants ... then it becomes $500

Get boots ... make that $700

and Case Covers ... $800 ...

Migdude.. it'll be worth every penny images/icons/grin.gif

Most of that stuff you talk about it stuff worth getting, and you'll use it a long time. Good call on the case covers.. Some people don't thinkg about it.. and a minor get-off could end their day prematurely because their case-cover broke..

They should be OK, but if the back end starts to squirm around when you get on the gas, you know they're done. I've had take-offs last one and a half track days before, but they were 15 lap scrubs. The faster you go, the quicker they'll be gone. Be smooth on the throttle and you'll be fine images/icons/smile.gif

Well if it's your first time on a racetrack, I highly doubt you'll have problems with the tires, regardless of how used they are.

Don't worry about the tires, and just ride. images/icons/smile.gif

IMO those tires will be fine for your first track day. Plenty of tread(indicating 1... maybe 2 track days)...also looks like little/zero cupping. Another indication that a Sportmax hasn't been around the track too many times. You should be fine.

See ya there. graemlins/thumbup.gif

As said, you should be fine for your first trackday as for the most part you'll be concentrating on learning the track , hitting your brake markers, the optimum line to take, etc. But they do look pretty cooked and you don't want to push too hard with those puppies. Have fun and ride safe graemlins/thumbup.gif .

You guys are about right, I've gotten a couple of opinions too, and according to them, I should be be good for one TrackDay, and if I'm not going too fast and pushing too hard, mmmaybe 2.

---thanks ... graemlins/thumbup.gif

The bad news is when you get fast the tires disappear really quick......good luck and be safe. I love take offs and have run them bald-before I change them- for 18 months out at willow....just gotta becareful and listen to the tires as the get old...they will give you hints---HEED THEM! Track days rule! Get ready to hand all your money over once your hooked!

Also remember that cold tires dont stick... Use your first lap out to make sure the tires warm up a bit before you hammer on them.. images/icons/smile.gif
