: 18" tires?

I have an RC 18" rear wheel. I currently have an avon tire on, and it hooks like shit. Someone told me that MT makes an 18" rear street tire but i havnt been able to find one. Anyone know of any good compound 18" tires? Or do i need to fork over some $$ and get a 17" wheel?
Thanks

Depends on what you're trying to do. AFAIK, MT only makes the MCR2 in 17" size, and the only 18" motorcycle tires that I see listed on their site are dragracing slicks, not street tires. If you keep that 18" wheel, you're going to be limited on selection for street tires.

Thanks cat. thats kinda what i gathered, but i thought id see if anyone else had any sugg. I will mostly be at the track, but id like to do some street riding also. Someone told me i could get a slick, and have it grooved, not sure how that would work out. I just hate to drop close to a grand on another wheel. I have other places id rather put my money, but i guess without traction, everything else is pointless...

Post up on dragbike.com for a trade. You may find someone wanting to go to 18" wheel specifically to be able to use a slick. couldn't hurt to put it out there and see what happens. Worst-case, just get a 17 x 5.5 stock wheel and run it like that til you can put aside the $.

...and no fair teasing us with that tiny avatar. Post up a full-size photo of that beast! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

It's also possible that some of the roadrace guys might know of a "DOT race" compound that's available for 18" wheels... wouldn't be a mickey, but I betchya it'd hook better than that avon. There's more and more interest in "vintage" bikes it seems like - someone's bound to make some decent tires for the old stuff (I would think).

Nice lookin' bike! It looks like you're runnin' a strut and no license-plate anyway? Why donchya just put a 18x7" wide slick on it and run it like that? 60' times will be better than any DOT tire you can get your hands on...

At the time them pics were taken, it was strutted. Ive since put on a busa shock. Traction was NON existant with the strut. I do wanna run it on the street some, so id like to stick to a DOT. I have been tempted though!! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Ive even looked into buying a 17" rim band and replacing that on the wheel i have. They have them on the RC website. The wheel i have is a little older, so i called RC and asked and they said they do not recommend it. Im thinking, why the hell do you sell them then??! I am a CNC die maker, and have acess to a CMM, so im pretty sure i could get it true. Any one ever do this, or know of someone who has?? It just sounded like the "tech people" at rc didnt even know what i was talking about.

They're probly just tryin' to cover their butts in case you die in a firey-crash and your surviving family-members wanna sue someone. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Have you tried posting an ad on dragbike.com and seeing if someone has a 17" er for trade? Or you could just sell it outright and maybe score a used one a little lighter on the wallet.

Gixxergofast,go with the 17" wheel so you can run all the latest compound rubber. It's a shame to have to sacrifice traction from having an obsolete wheel size. You put alot of time, money&effort into that bike, get the 17"&let dat bitch hook so it can run the # it should.
I've got a set of 17" RC Comp's on my waterpumper.I'll be putting it together for the springtime. It should run mid 8's on motor http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

It prolly depends on who you talk to http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/bash.gif Im thinking i'll order the band and go that route. For $190, itll be the cheapest. Im sure that i can make it work safely. Mid 8's on the motor is haulin!! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/punk.gif Now i gotta try and find a sprocket for that wheel If i can convert to 530. Schnitz only lists a 630. But the one i have is 532. Id like to go to 530 just for master link availability. Custom bikes are a pain in the ass!! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/piss.gifI remember the days of ordering stuff through cataloges, just look up your bike model and year, and presto...

sprocket specialists makes all my sprockets for my RC wheel on my GSXR, i run 530 also. hell depending on the teeth count you need i might have a slightly used one laying on my shelf that i dont use anymore....

46 tooth? That would be sweet. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif If you have one let me know how much and your paypal addy. Email me at ovcco57@aol.com . I looked on the rc website and it listed a bunch with what they call the "108z pattern". Im guessing thats the only one they have made? The one i have is 8 holes on a 3" or so bolt circle. How heavy are the RC wheels in comparison to stock? I havnt weighed them for a comparison, but ive been told they are just as heavy as stock. Thanks again!
