: No going back now !
UK lee 02-01-2003, 02:39 AM The latest installment in my 7/1216 project images/icons/grin.gif
Well , there's no going back now ! graemlins/spit.gif
I took the plunge today , and chopped off the old subframe , then smoothed down the area where the lugs mounted to the frame graemlins/burnout.gif
http://www.gixxer.com/uploads/1044073985.JPG
i've offered up the new tailpiece and subframe ( '02 GSXR) , i'll have to jig it in postion - then make some new mounts and get them welded to the frame .
http://www.gixxer.com/uploads/1044074120.JPG
i reckon it'll look trick when it's finished ! ,
I'll keep you posted
fightin-ry 02-02-2003, 09:48 PM FINISHED....What's that??? I thought fighters were never finished.
Great start graemlins/thumbup.gif

imported_Dr. E 02-03-2003, 05:07 PM that's looking really GOOD!!!!!
i'm looking for ideas sor my tail/subframe... right now i'm kinda mocking around with an older GSXR 1100 race tail that i cut and am trying to makelook good on my stock subframe...
what would be your suggestions?
93gix750wp 02-04-2003, 12:27 PM i think you should just put a set of bicycle pedals and chain on it and ride it around your neighborhood right now. graemlins/thumbup.gif looks really good.
Bones_GSXR 02-04-2003, 11:59 PM I was going to do the same thing to my 88. but might put it on my 90 instead.
y2kgsxr6 02-08-2003, 09:41 PM graemlins/thumbup.gif graemlins/bounce.gif graemlins/cheers.gif very nice!
Graham 02-13-2003, 09:56 PM How does the size of tube used on the new subframe compare to the old one???
I am thinking of doing this, but it looks like I'll need to extend the new subframe top rails. Could you use a section from the old subframe to do this? or are the sizes different?
How does the width of the subframe look relative to the frame?
Sorry for all the questions, but from the pictures, it looks like you're well on the way to getting things figured out.
UK lee 02-16-2003, 04:14 AM Hi Graham.
OK , the new subframe is on , and lookin' goooooooooood ! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/banana.gif http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/banana.gif http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/banana.gif
To answer your questions first , the sizes of the box section ally tubes are almost the same , but the original '88 is slighlty rectangular in section - where as the Y2K gixxer is square section.
Compare to the original , the Y2K top tubes are positioned slighly further inboard by around 15mm ( you could bend them out though ! ) the other problem is that to get the seat unit positioned 'right' the new subframe needs to be mounted further up.
the lower rails of the Y2K subbie , are virtually the same width apart ( at the point where they need to meet the frame) than the original .
But they both need to sit at a different angle to the originals - for the whole lot to 'look' right.
yes you could cut of the old and joint it to the new , it would be a lot of hassle - and i just dont think you could get it to look neat.
I decided to start from scratch - i removed all trace of the old subframe ( and sold it on ebay for £90 ! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif) and sanded down the back of the main frame loop so it was completely flat.
i jigged the seat unit into postion with blocks of wood - so i could make some new 15mm thick ally 'tabs' to weld to the frame' and mount the Y2K subframe. I also removed the Fuel tank mounting strap off the existing subframe and welded it to the new tabs.
http://www.gixxer.com/uploads/Subframe_1.JPG
http://www.gixxer.com/uploads/Subframe_2.JPG
I reckon this is the best way to attach the new rear end - the advantages are i can use the original 'un molested' Y2K subframe and it simply 'bolts straight on' - so should the worst happen - replacement will be a very simple task. and the original plastics, seats and undertray all fit with no hassle - and look just like a 'factory job'.
the final piece of the jigsaw - was the 'gap' left between the new rear bodywork and my existing '88 fuel tank . IMHO too may streetfighters are 'let down' by ignoring a little detail - many bikes have new rear bodywork fitted - but the 'lines' of the bike just dont flow.
a few mates reckoned it looked ok with the way it was - but 'ok' aint good enough for me , that gap was bugging me , and i wanted it right.
i fabricated some thick steel 'extensions' for the tank - (it took me a whole day to carefully shape them and contour them ! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif)
then i welded them to the tank - once they're blended in and its all painted with the seat on , the final result will be much more 'flowing' and - well , what do you think ?

imported_Dr. E 02-16-2003, 12:42 PM that looks really awesome!!!!!
what do you use to cut the thick aluminium?
i just got my engine back together and back in the frame yesterday... and now it's time to get something figured out for the tail section!! your write up gave me some good ideas.
thanx for the info!!!
check out http://www.streetfighters.ca , i would like to use ur bike as another feature bike if that's all right with you!
Bones_GSXR 02-16-2003, 02:40 PM Looks Good! I was planning on doing this to my 90 but I put it off till next winter. I sold all my Tail parts to FastCat So I'm shure she will be interested in how you did it. I was planning something simallar but I was going to make the upper tabs larger to fill the gap instead of welding a plate to the tank.

Yeah - The pics you posted so far look *really* good. I agree about the "fit-n-finish" thing... I'm really interested in any additional drawings/sketches/dimensions/details that you have about the new brackets that you had fabricated for welding to the frame. I haven't gotten to the point that I'm ready to cut anything yet.
Is the subframe and seat assy in the same position in the "jig pictured" and also after you welded the new tabs on? I really like the way the bodywork and tank lines flow together - it makes me that much happier to know that someone else already did it and it works!

what do you use to cut the thick aluminium?
Eh?
Whaddya bloody think he used? A butter knife maybe? Or perhaps a chainsaw? Oh I know, he chewed on it for a bit to make it soft and then tore it apart wiv 'is bare hands! :-)
You may not realise it, but us Brits actually get physical with stuff and use a hacksaw, yes a hacksaw (!) to cut aluminium (that's aluminium with an 'i')

UK lee 02-17-2003, 01:32 PM Dont go winding 'em up zedhead , you know these dudes carry guns n stuff ! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/bitchslap.gif lol !
Yep , i have to admit i did it the hard way http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/bash.gif with a hacksaw & a file - took me bloody ages too !
I dont have any drawings for the tabs i'm afraid - i just jigged the new tai lunit into the postion i liked best ( with bit's of wood and metal 'straps' ) then i used bits of carboard trimmed to fit, to get the shapes i wanted - i made sure that the left and right shapes were symetrical , and positoned at exactly the same point on each frame spar - this way i new that the Y2K subframe would be mounted perfectly square.
then i hacksawed the shapes out , drilled the mounting holes , then i (sandwiched the two uppers together and the two lowers ) and filed them both smooth and the same shape at the same time !
Not the easiest way i'll admit - but just as effective http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
FastCat 02-17-2003, 05:57 PM Thanks for getting back to me, Lee... I figured as much - I'll sit around and stare at all the pieces for a week or more before I get the hacksaw out... and I'll change my mind five times about how I wanna do it before I actually cut anything... will be interesting to see how it all turns out - PLEASE keep us updated here with pics as you get further along with yours.
Zed- and those minor bends in the tabs? I suppose he just used his bare, bloody hands to do that eh? LOL! Limeys rock! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/punk.gif

maybe you should chew on some valium or ritalin ? http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/banana.gif
but regardless... i used the hacksaw as well to make my brackets, with the help of a dremel and an angle grinder. Lee... your bike looks kick ass... are you following Will's project in streetfighters??? up here in canada we're about 2 months behind in issues.
hope to see the fighter scene grow together more.
oh... and i'm croatian also zed... i can euro-talk too.
UK lee 03-12-2003, 01:04 PM Ok , another quick update then ! -
After having the new moutning tabs for the Y2K gixxer subframe , and the reinforcement plates for the headstock welded up - the frame went for polishing, and a load of other stuff went for chroming - I got it all back this week http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I should get my cylinder head back from the tuner this weekend - then , once i've built the motor , i can start to build the bike properly.

fightin-ry 03-15-2003, 10:58 PM Lookin good......yet another sf feature bike.
Here's a question......When you mount your risers, do you brace the bottom of the yoke?
http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif
UK lee 03-16-2003, 02:48 AM I bolt the risers to the yoke first , then get them fully welded on. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/idea.gif
i had a mate, who's risers nearly came off his 'fightered TL 1000 ,cuz the 'heads' of the allen bolts nearly 'pulled through' the yokes http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif , he was a bit of a wheelie merchant though ! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

UK lee 03-28-2003, 02:54 PM Ok guys , i thought it was time i gave you an update on the progress of my 7/11 project http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
I'm was hoping to get my cylinder head finally back this weekend , but alas it's not meant to be. I was in a bit of a rush to get it built in time for the Streetfighters Show in Sheffield , England on the 12/13 April - but now i've learnt that the head wont be ready for another 3 weeks http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif .
To be honest, i'm a bit releived , as now i dont have to rush to finish the bike in time for the show , i can 'slow' the pace of the build - and spend more time getting the details right .the family will prolly appreciate that i'm not spending 5/6 hours in the garage every night , after a full day at work http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif.
this is how it's looking so far - ( it's still only a 'dry' build , so dont berate me yet ! , as lots of stuff has to come apart again for finishing off http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif)
http://www.gixxer.com/uploads/P42800330.JPG
http://www.gixxer.com/uploads/P4280037.JPG
the stuff i've managed to do over the last couple of weeks includes , fit the rebuilt / re valved GSXR1100M shock and site the remote resevoir ( still need to mount it properly though !) - rework the whole wiring harness , shortening / lengthening wires where necessary to suit the new positioning of the ancilliaries and routing it more neatly, incorporating new wires for the NOS kit and other stuff then covering it in overbraid and shrinkwrap.
I've also finished the (adjustable )mouting bracket for the Kawasaki KLE 500 headlamp & fairing that i'll be using , and fabricated a new 'fascia' to house the instruments 'deep' inside the fairing. I've sourced a Yamaha RD350LC speedo cable to connect the Thunderace speedo drive to the original GSXR speedometer. I rebuilt & polished the ZX7R master cylinders , and used the smaller clutch remote resevior for both of them to keep things neat and symetrical, i also made up the stainless braided brake hoses and covered them in black shrinkwrap for a neat 'factory' look.
I got my carbon fibre undertray for the GSXR Y2K seat unit ( complete with trick oval LED lamp http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif) and after a few mods to the existing undertay , that was fitted too.
there's still loads to do , but i really need to have the motor assembled and in the frame , before i can do stuff like - fabricate new brackets to mount the extra wide earls cooler , re route the exhaust link pipe , make the braided hoses for the clutch , Oil pressure gauge & crankcase breathers etc - i still need to sort out stuff like the number plate bracket and chain guard too..........
Will i ever finish my bike ?? http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
Oppugnall 03-29-2003, 01:47 AM Looking good. I cant wait for time and money to come my way for a second bike. I want a fighter but also hope to incorporate some MV parts such as tail and exhaust. I seen an SV650 with the parts fitted and looked sweet..
Keep the installments coming.

My cylinder head - fresh from the hands of Roger Upperton ( Cylinder Head man Extrodinaire ! ) , & prior to the oversize valves being installed + inlet pots drilled and tapped to accept the NOS Foggers .
http://www.gixxer.com/uploads/7_11_a.JPG
the motor is built up ( engine covers are spares , in case of damage during build http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif)
front and rear suspnsion is on , Yoshi Duplex manifold and Oil Cooler are just temp fitted to check for clearance etc .
http://www.gixxer.com/uploads/7_11_b.JPG
Since i'm not running an airbox ( running RS38's with K&N pod filters ) - i've made a stainless plate to fill the 'hole' in the frame , i'll be using it to mount most of the NOS hardware and electrics .

Nzane 05-12-2003, 12:32 AM So what happened to all the pics?? where can i see them?? also, are those R1 forks slid in the gixxer triples?
UK lee 05-12-2003, 05:06 AM yep - forks are Yamaha YZF1000 R1 2002 - i've had the tubes anodised black , the internals re valved by Revs Racing and uprated Ohlins springs fitted. - yes they fit straight into GSXR750 L,M & N yokes.
They are 740mm long from the centre of the wheel spindle to the top of the fork leg
( GSXR 1100M forks measure 745mm at the same point)
