the R6 is much more superior in the suspension department than your 94 Katana, as well as power and acceleration.

the suspension in your Katana is geared more for sport touring than the race ergo's of the R6

It's your skills.

My uncle can easily hang with me on his 86 Gixxer 1100 through the corners.

LOL. even if you get a new sportbike, you still won't be able to keep up. its the skills.

i had a 99 katana and i had no problem keeping up with my friends.

No offense, but maybe your friends skilz aren't all that. All things being equal, a guy on a older Katana SHOULD NOT be able to keep up with a 03 R6 in the twisties. Suspension, tires, brakes, acceleration.... R6, R6, R6, R6. Case closed. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

No offense, but I see plenty of guys on brand new sportbikes that only use the 3 inches of tread in the middle of their tires.

Do you think that racers weren't hauling ass and draggin a knee 20+ years ago on motorcycles that would be considered inferior by todays standards??? It's all about experience, experience, experience.

The difference is just that the Katana was never intended to be a full-on sport bike, more a sport tourer. The stock suspension sucks bad when you push it hard...

OTOH, a Katana with upgraded suspension, good tires and a good rider on top will surprice a lot of people... http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

The phrase "Hauling Ass" is relative. They were hauling ass for 20 years ago, yes, but today we have club racers going six seconds a lap faster than Rainey and Schwantz did on the same tracks. Do you think todays racers are actually faster or are better tire technology, engine technology, and suspension technology a more viable explanation? That's why I said "all things being equal" because if you put an okay rider on a good bike and a good rider on a poor bike (based on what we know about racing tech) the good rider MAY be able to keep up but with all things being equal, i.e. good rider vs good rider... the better bike wins. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif That's why Superbikes are so adjustable and racers spend so much time dialing them in for specific tracks and conditions. If it were JUST skills then the same guy would win EVERY race. BTW What I said wasn't meant as a diss, I hope it wasn't taken that way http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Its no contest.
I learnt to ride on a Katana and got a soft spot for them but trying to keep up with a modern, full on sports bike on one is likely to end in tears.
