: Heroes
Starsky 10-17-2005, 06:16 AM In your opinion, what makes a HERO?
The NYPD/FD members charging into the WTC when everyone else was heading the other way?
The Soldiers in the middle east?
Are these people Heroes or "just doing there job"? Both?
23653 10-17-2005, 06:19 AM Both. They chose that job, nobody told them to join the military, or the NYPD/FD. they but them selves in harms way

So you think they are heroes AND doing there job?
S.Hart3 10-17-2005, 06:25 AM I will tell you what my Dad said. He is a retired Firefighter and the first thing he said about all the firefighters losing there lives was, They were just doing their job .

Look what NOPD did. They ran with their tails covering their pussies. NYPD and NYFD went into harms way when they could have easily turned around. Some of them died doing their job. They knew the danger and had the choice to do their job or not, and they chose to go into harms way. Soldiers may be doing their job, but they joined the military at their own will. Now, they are over in foreign countries getting shot at keeping us safe and helping a country establish democracy. They are heroes. They are doing heroic things. Now, if a cop just writes tickets and occasionally rescues a cat in the tree, they do not earn that title IMO.

plus 1
I, personally, think the the "just doing their job" schtick is a bullshit response by jealous cowards. I think that someone who will put there life on the line to help someone else is a hero.
Getting paid for it, is a by-product. We need people that are willing and able to do these sort of things to help those that need it. If we didn't pay them how would these otherwise giving people live and provide for their families?
And before anyone goes off about this cop you know who did it for the power, or the firefighter who did it for the chicks, or the soldier who did it for the education, Save it. A job where the motivation is to help people (not make profits) is heroic.

Antagonist·5000 10-17-2005, 08:18 AM Ill consider anyone a hero if they can rip my fully clouded 3ft Roor and remain standing.
Sluggo33 10-17-2005, 09:04 AM I'm a firefighter and I've never once considered myself a hero. Hero is a very strong word and I think nowadays it's used pretty loosely. Hell you see athletes that have a good game called heros. I get a chuckle out of that. The ones that do consider themselves heros though aren't doing this profession for the love of it, or the joy of helping people, they are doing it for self-serving reasons. We have a few guys like that on my fire department. But the overwhelming majority are pretty humble guys, and gals. Some expect some sort of special treatment just because of the profession they've chosen. I won't lie, we have some small perks that I'll admit to using. The local movie theatre lets us in for any show for $1, and a few of the gas stations give us free soda out of the fountain machine. I'll admit I've used those on occasion, but we have guys that think they're above the law and stuff and it kind of pisses me off because it makes alot of us look bad, but at the same time the first time that those guys get in a good burner they usually quit shortly there after. I'm sorry, I was ranting. Anyways, save the "hero's" for the people that TRUELY deserve it. Are fire fighters occasionally heros? Sure. But so are police officers, soldiers, hell, anyone that does anything "heroic" is. One alot of people miss are teachers. People underappreciate the impact of a good teacher on a child today. GIve them some credit. You don't have to have a certain profession to be a hero, anyone can be given the right circumstances and the will to put their own well being behind someone elses.

F'in Aye!
sjerseycopper 10-17-2005, 12:33 PM A hero is someone (not just a cop or firefighter) who goes above and beyond what a reasonable person would do in a situation and does not expect or want recognition for what he/she has done.
Pat Tillman = Hero. Guy could have stayed in the NFL making great money, but chose to fight for our country. The only press about it was not until after he died.

Agreed, I just had an argument today with someone today about the NYPD/FD guys not being heros because they chose their line of work, I fuckin flew off the handle.
