i am seriously considering moving to Florida problably next spring. what parts of Florida do people recomend? i will have 60 hrs of college credit by that time and will be looking to become a police officer. i would just be working wherever to pay the bills until i can get a real job.

i was thinking orlando
or Miami

i like miami more

but looking online at apartments-i cannot tell which places are in the projects or not bc i may bring my girlfiends down with me and i wouldnt want her in the ghetto

any advice from Florida peeps

orlando will be cheaper, im sure. Orlando is good, because its centrally located, hour from tampa, hour from the beaches on the east coast, COLLEGE TOWN, so if thats your style. Id choose Orlando over miami easliy.

You could come to sarasota, lol

Listen to me very carefully, DO NOT MOVE TO FL! I am desperately trying to escape. Its so humid and hot and horrible down here you will not last long. I dont even go to check the mail until night time, lol...

Florida is full, go back where you came from.

On a more serious note, the pay is better down in Miami than in Orlando for police officers. Do you speak any spanish? What did you study in college? Even apartments in the ghetto cost a fortune down here, and it dosen't matter if you're in the ghetto, here the ghetto has no problem coming to you.

i do not speak spanish fluently but i can hold a conversation

I don't even go to the mailbox. I have trained the palmetto bugs to bring the mail up to me. Since they are the size of newborn kittens it only takes a couple of them to do the job. Don't know what palmetto bugs are? Think of cockroaches on serious steroids.

You guys think the Humidity is that bad?

When I was in Tampa over the summer, I died for the first week (I seriously had trouble breathing because the air was so hot and moist). After that, I was fine. I could do anything outside including running...

No kidding! I spent a couple years in Orlando and know exactly what you're talking about. You stomp on one of them things, it does a push up to throw you off and just keeps on moving. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I lived in Fort Walton and Miami. If you don't speak espanol or have a forture, stay towards the northern portion of Florida.

Man, every single time I go into my garage (which I keep clean) to get laundry or whatever I have to run screaming from a roach. They range in size from little to DAMN THATS A BIG MOFO! and yes, they can fly. I had the bug spray on one last night and it was running at me, I am sure the whole neighborhood heard me screaming. Thank God I have only found three in the house in two years...*shudders*. I have discovered something that could be considered way worse if they were as common as those palmetto bugs and roaches. It is like at least 4 inches long and has HORNS. Some kind of crazy ass beetle and they fly and you can hear them hit the ground............fhkehei thirehgughwer ui

It takes some time to figure things out with moving...maybe start looking now and then you could have everything (jobs, place to live, etc) ready to go by summer.

What type of jobs would you and your girlfriend be looking for? Would you guys have degrees by then?

mkurgan
10-16-2005, 02:01 AM
ok ya i have been looking a lot and i am thinking orlando area. we would probablo move late spring early summer.
i would have no degree but 60 hrs--i will need any job for a while to pay the bills and all gotta at least make $11/hr i would be looking to get on a police departmnt but obviously need money in the meantime
my girlfriend will have a bachelors--she will be looking for something fitness related

i found an orlando website that breaks down each neighborhood into demographics, but it is hard to learn about a neighborhood without actually seeing it

can anybody recommend any good towns or neighborhoods around orlando?

basically i will be researching for 7-9 months just gathering as much info as possible

I live in Miami, so I can't be of much help for Orlando...but both your career choices are big around here...being a cop and anything fitness is huge areound here...so thats a good start

Good luck man

I'd rather deal with the bugs than the people down here, if you like rednecks than florida is the place for you, if your from a "Blue" state, stay away. In florida Bush 0wnz U. And IMHO florida is teh suck! i'm outtie 5k once i get my degree in may. If i can't convince you to stay away, and you are a college student, i'd recommend going to UF in gainsville, the town is awesome for college students (just went there for the first time last week) and i wish i'd have gone to school there instead of to my gay school in gaytona beach.

I think to each his own...
Some people hate it, others love it-just like anything else.
With moving away--If you can find decent jobs to pay the bills, you won't be leaving people you will miss a lot behind, your relationship is strong enough to survive the move, and you are ready to start your life together and build from the ground up--its just a matter of what kind of weather you like and what type of housing you can afford.

I made a similar move with my girlfriend and we are great--but the above things need to be in place before you can make such a drastic change.

We have been extremely happy in the Miami area and we make enough to cover the bills and go out to dinner and a movie on the weekends. It took a lot to do it, but it is exciting starting our life together in such a nice place-

Let me know if you have any questions about the Miami area..once again, good luckk

Correction! The only people who like it in florida don't know anybetter. If your from anyplace else that has any kind of "real" city. Then you'd hate it down here. The one thing i can commend is that you can ride year round, unfortunately as stated before, there aren't any twisties (unless you look really hard and don't mind riding through people's neighborhoods at night). So yeah that said. Florida sucks, go anywhere else! I'm from NYC, i've been to washington state, and everystate between NY and FL and everyone was better! (ok except west virginia).
