I work at a bar and I guess you could say it's my job to get people drunk. However I am probably one of the few if not the only one there who asks who the designated driver is when a group starts throwing back shots or its obvious they want to get trashed. Whenever someone comes in w/ a helmet in their hand (OK, we know you're on a bike, leave it outside already http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif) or a jacket on I always give them shit and tell them I'm not serving them more than one or I'll say something to the effect that they dont plan on having any more, riiiiggght??? After I tell them I ride and blah blah (or used to anyway) they seem to take me more seriously. Like a fellow rider telling them its not cool to drink and ride.

Anyways, there are a few guys that come in there that come drunk and leave drunker. We know they drive home. They are regulars and they are alcoholics (one has SIX, yes SIX DUI's and is still out driving around and running a tow business). I refuse to serve them at all. I cant even stand to look at them, they disgust me. I dont even think they should be allowed in there as they pose a risk to the club since they leave trashed all the time and the club can get sued if there were an accident.

Sunday night one of 'em was in there. After awhile (I was waitressing) I told the bartender who was serving him that he was cut off. I had to pick up my son after work and did not want this drunk f*cker out in traffic w/ me. A few minutes later I see he has a new beer, I curse to myself but the bartender was in the bathroom so then I was busy and forgot to say anything to her. Awhile after that I see he has ANOTHER one so I say, hey, he's cut OFF, stop serving him. She's like I know, Amy, its his last one. She is a friend of mine and I know she has a hard time saying no to people or being rude or mean. Not me. I'm quick to cut someone off and tell them to get the f*ck out.

I go to the bouncers outside and ask them if there is anything they can do to prevent him from driving. I guess all they can do is call a cab. They cant take his keys from him or force him to take the cab. I am pissed. So I go back in, tell the bartender to distract the drunk and I take his keys off the bar. I then gave them to the DJ (my friend and former roommate) and told him "you dont know where these came from, you dont know whose these are, you know nothing about them, period, got it?!" He puts them up. Cab comes, drunk refuses to take it. Realizes keys are gone, looks for them. Asks us about them. Says oh well, I have another set in the truck...http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/cussing.gif So I go to the DJ to get the keys back so I can throw them in the garbage. That way the next time I steal his keys he wont have an extra set. DJ says no, he'll come get em tomorrow or something. Cut to closing time. Manager starts telling me that he told me we werent allowed to take keys and why did I. I say, I didnt, he says you did, etc. He says how come the DJ has drunk guys keys, I say I found three sets of keys tonight and gave em to the DJ. Yeah, he says, but how does he know they are Hanks (drunk guy). At this point the DJ is hearing me deny any knowledge of the them being Hanks keys but is so damn stupid he is trying to hand me an envelope with "hanks keys" written on it, right in front of the manager!!! I was like WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU GIVING THEM TO ME FOR?! How wtupid can this dude be http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/disappointed.gif.

So the manager says you know we can get sued if anything happens to his car in the parking lot tonight so I say YEAH, well cant you get sued if he kills me and my kid tonight?!! I cant wait to be able to have my own business and stop working in places like that but at this point I have to do what I have to do to make $ and still be able to go to school and take care of my son.

i get stupid drunk sometimes, its my choice, but i would never ever drive under the influence. i have when i was 17/18, and luckily didnt have to learn the hard way.

He drinks on his morning 15 minute break, on his first half hour lunch, then on his hour dinner, and again on his last break of the night. Before he leaves work, he'll buy a 24 pack case of Natural Light Ice. I was driving by him as we were leaving the store one night and was watching him drink and drive. However that does not give her the right to take matters into her own hands. The man commited no crime at that point in time, yet she DID. Theft IS a crime and though her intentions may have been noble, she was wrong.

When one leaves real drunk take a break and go outside and call cops from cell phone and give them license plate num and direction they are going.

I have taken a TIPS program ...(The TIPS (Training for Intervention ProcedureS) programs teach servers, sellers and consumers of alcohol to prevent intoxication, drunk driving and underage drinking.) that teaches you how to deal with situation like that and the best bet is to call the cops. That way it's not liable to the place you work at and you. you NEVER take the keys away b/c thats thief adn you and the owner can be liable for anything that happens to the persons car. He can say that he had 10K in the car and it's gone the next day . Then what are you goin to do. The best bet is that you call the cops and let them take care of it. If the cops let him/her drive off then it's on thm not you. You might want to tell your management team to look into this program. http://www.gettips.com/

First of all, you all need to learn how to respond to peoples posts w/o being ASSHOLES! I posted to vent and expected opinions. That doesnt give Blaise the right to call me dumb or anyone else to cry about me being a drama queen. This is only the second post I have made about my job so shut up already.

The DJ didnt know I didnt want the manager to know I took the keys. He didnt do it on purpose he's just stupid. I am not going to get into trouble or get fired either, yeah, I lied to my boss but he could tell I wasnt REALLY trying to lie, I was more joking w/ him like shit I'm caught. I also know that legally we cant take their keys but I DONT REGRET taking them. If it kept him there long enough to at least sober him up a little bit thats better than nothing. If I were to call the cops I would be immediately fired. 911 records calls and numbers etc. and when the cops showed up they would be coming inside causing a scence. Not waiting in the parkin lot for him to leave.

I felt after going to management and them basically saying "so what" I had no other choice.

BTW, we have meetings like every other month for that stupid TIPS program and a lady comes in and talks to us.

Drunk guy at work tonight, I cut him off but he still got served. Called him a cab and told him not to drive. (so far same story). He left and got in his car to drive home. On his way he hit a car w/ a man, a pregnant lady and their three yr old in it. All died but the toddler. He is paralyzed now and has no parents. I wish I would have taken his keys or tried to do something but I would hate for the guys on GDC to think I am a lowly thief. Maybe next time I will be able to help.

And taking keys from a friend is a different story......a friend will understand once he sobers up and realizes you did him/her a favor and then give him his keys back. A customer is just going to be real pissed off once he finds out you took his/her keys without them knowing and wanted to toss them in the trash.

I was a bar tender for many years.. at both the local "hot clubs" and at a Country Club.. and the "regulars" were what made me quit... couldn't take it anymore seeing the same people doing the same thing night after night... whether they had the money or not.. whether they had a wife / husband / children or not...

The worse though was the CC... serious drunks with money. Saw people do discusting things for $ there... some very sad stuff. One guy brought a roll of silver dollars and threw them on the floor and laughed as the workers scrambled for them in the filth.. I'll never forget that scene or that guys laugh.

You said that none of us have lost someone in a drunk driving accident. How dare you make that assumtion? I watched my brother get hit on his bike by a drunk driver. I watched him bleed and I held him as he died. I STILL have the jacket stained with his blood. My sister was on the otherside of the coin and caused some else's son to die in a DUI accident, another event that destroyed my family and someone elses. Still think I don't know what its like. I've got two grave sites for you to see and a forever sorry sibling to have you talk to.

Yeah, funny, NJRacer. This is the second time Blaise has called me a cunt in the past 24 hours. The first time he actually apologized and I almost passed out. However as the bigger person I noted his apology and accepted it. Everyone in here already saw it so changing it for him was kinda pointless.

Thats fine, you have your opinion, I have mine. Re the theft part, yes, I admit (as I thought I already did or meant to) that it was technically illegal to take his keys, it is theft, but it doesnt change the fact that I did it for what I thought was a good reason. Can this be the end of it already? The point of the thread wasnt whether or not I was wrong it was about alcoholics.

To answer your question regarding what I plan to do for a career, I could be a bitch to you and say its none of your f*cking business which is how I would be responded to, maybe not by you but by others. I took it as a serious question and not a smart ass remark (tho slightly offended that you implied I may plan on waitressing forever) so I will answer you.

First of all I havent been able to go back to school after graduating because at first (18-21) for the life of me I couldnt decide between vet, advertising, or interior design, I also was interested in law (only to one day be a judge and right some of the wrongs and injustices in the world as we all hear about or experience everyday). Anyways, since then (21-26) I have been unable to get back to school because I got pregnant unexpectely and felt it was more important to raise my son and spend as much time w/ him as possible. I was only this year comfortable enough to put him into PreK and as some of you know after 2 months i took him out because of a safety issue. During those two months tho I was taking a nail tech class because it was a very short course (2 months) and I was desperate to get out of the job I am now in for various reasons. I quit that school because I realized that I would be moving very shortly after I finished and then would have to retake that school over in the state I moved to. I went online and researched NC design schools and found one in Charlotte that also offers online classes so I start next month and when I move to NC I can either continue online or finish w/ classes at the school. I start Nov. 6 I believe. It will be for Residential Planning (which is the first year of Interior Design w/o any commercial design) and will teach me all I need to know to remodel homes. If I choose to continue after the first year of school I can transfer my credits and take the other 3 years of Interior Design.
