Guy: W.L. Smith. (This guy is as redneck as I've seen in a long while)
COG: WL? How do you spell that:
Guy: W. L.
COG: What kind of name is that? How do you pronounce it?
Guy: W. L.
COG: (Totally doesn't get it that he's using his initials) Starts laughing. WL it is. Says something that sounds kinda like "woool", laughs some more.
Guy: What's so funny?
COG: You've got a funny name. (continues to get address, etc)
So I come up to the checkout & need to return an item I bought last week. Everything goes cool until she counts out my change - $106.49:
COG: OK - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 49 cents. (My change was four 20's, two 10's, a 5 & a 1 (8 total bills). She just counted the number of bills and handed me the change! It took me a minute to figure out what she was doing & recount everything.

Change should be counted out as it is handed to the customer so as not to leave any room for confusion over the amount of change given.
Hell, I only worked the register, tire machine and full service aisle at a Chevron for 6 months over a decade ago and I remember that.

The only time I got questioned at Chevron was when I passed out at the register running the place by myself on a Sunday morning that was the aftermath of a long mescaline trip.
Some asshole had the nerve to come in and slap his hand on the counter and ask to pay for his gas. This was back in the pump first days.
Anyway, the next time I was coming down off of mescaline I called in quit.
It was fun saying "Yeah, I need to call in quit"
"What"
"I said I'm calling in quit. As in, I'm not coming in, ever again."

Suzuki Chelly 10-10-2005, 01:57 PM It's pretty rare for a cashier to count up from the sale price to the amount tendered anymore. I do it at work because we don't use any sort of modern cash register, and the old fashioned way is the best way to get it right in that case.
