Kneedown 10-05-2005, 06:42 AM MIAMI (AFP) - The tail of an alligator protruding from the ruptured gut of a python, which had swallowed its foe alive, bore witness to a fierce and unusual battle between two of the deadliest predators in Florida's swamps.

Park rangers, who photographed the remains of the two huge reptiles in the Everglades National Park, say the clash demonstrates the threat to the fragile swamplands posed by a growing population of non-native Burmese pythons.
Pythons, thought to have abandoned by pet owners, have been multiplying in the large swath of swampland, and environmentalists fear the exotic intruders threaten to overrun the national park, preying on native species.
The latest find suggest the huge pythons might even challenge alligators' leading position in the food chain.
Park biologist Skip Snow described the gruesome scene he found on September 27 in a remote corner of the Everglades park, which he said showed an almost 4-meter-long (12.5-foot) Burmese python had "apparently" entirely swallowed an alligator about half his size.
"I say apparently because the tail and hind limbs of the dead alligator were protruding from a hole in the mid-body of the dead python," said Snow.
"Although some bones of the jaw were present, the head of the python was missing," he said in a field report, illustrated with graphic photographs.
The photographs show the hind quarters of the alligator protruding from the snake's mid-section. "The stomach of the python still surrounded the head, shoulders, and forelimbs of the alligator," said Snow.
"When extracted from the snake, the alligator was largely intact except for two open wounds, one to the top of the skull behind the eyes and one on the shoulder," he said adding that it was unclear how the python's gut was ruptured, or how the snake died.
Park officials have removed dozens of Burmese pythons from the Everglades over the past years, and are training a Beagle, nicknamed "Python Pete," to track the exotic invaders.
removebe4flight 10-05-2005, 06:53 AM they are training a Beagle named Python Pete to hunt them down. that is the real WTF. i hope that they are not going to be spending allot of money on his training. probably just putting a tracking device on him and dropping him off in the middle of the glades. what are they thinking. "okay we have a python that is eating gator, what do we have to fight back, oh we have a beagle, lets get to work" i have a beagle and they are dumb as shit or at least the one i have it.

Dude you live in Jax. Don't you know about Brandon Pest control? They have Brandon the termite sniffing beagle. He's like a local super hero http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
Actually I don't know if he can do anything. I've used Brandon for all my pest control needs for the last 3 years and I've never seen no damn dog. For all I know they rented one for the tv commercial and then they just talk him up like he's a miracle worker.
I always thought beagles were supposed to be good hunting dogs but I don't see how one could track a snake. Sounds more like they got about 50 of them to use for bait.
Daryl 636 10-05-2005, 07:08 AM DAMN... thats a hungry bastard. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
Suzuki Chelly 10-05-2005, 07:14 AM That was just in the local news too. Pythons and gators seem to be pretty evenly matched. They've found pythons in the stomachs of gators, and they've found gators killed by pythons. That one looks like the python was winning, but the gator clawed it's stomach up real bad and killed the snake.
The beagle hunting pythons should be interesting. I'm guess they'll do it fox hunt style, with the beagle leading a guy with a gun to the python. My beagle will grab smaller things and shake them to death, but they're all about the team effort on stuff they know is too big for them. They'll keep their distance and be like "hey, shoot this damn thing already."

Amy269 10-05-2005, 11:31 AM I wonder if its stomach ruptured because the alligators skin was too tough to digest or whatever..or maybe the thing was kicking with its hind feet if it was still alive at that point and it claws ripped a hole in him. Also gotta wonder where the snakes head went .
Tru Texan 10-06-2005, 04:46 AM I don't know man.....A snake clawing down on a gator? Just doesn't sound believable....do these snakes have venom? If not I think that gator would have shook that snake off. And while it was shaking, the tail would have beat that snake to death. Hell, it can break a human femur instantly with one whip. And snakes don't eat fast so I just don't see it holding on to the gator that long, nor do i see it getting its big ass mouth around it.....Don't know..
Grandevil 10-06-2005, 04:48 AM I heard about this on the radio this morning, the python ATE the alligator http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/wtf.gif

I am no animal expert but constrictor just squeeze you every time you breath until you die and I doubt the rolling tecnique of a gator would work on a snake. It is totally believable to me.

KiloBike 10-06-2005, 01:45 PM There are a couple problems with the theory that the gator killed the snake from the inside out. First, the snake wouldn't try to eat the gator while it was still alive. Second the snake didn't have a head when they found it, I doubt the gator ripped the snake's head off after it was eaten. I would guess that the snake was too full to defend itself after eating the gator and another gator took a bite out of it's ass.

Not ot mention it takes almost NO pressure to hold a gators mouth shut. If the snake had the gators snout (which is how they %99 of the time do it) the gator didnt stand a chance.
Amy269 10-06-2005, 03:44 PM HA! I was right (maybe). I saw an article on it and they even said that the gator probably clawed at the inside of the snake and may have ripped him open that way. Think about it, it could have even been like nerves going crazy making it kick but either way that is most likely what ripped it open. As far as its head gone, yeah, I would imagine it was some other animal that bit if off, they said part of its jaw and shit was still there so.
Moto_Joe 10-06-2005, 03:56 PM i actually figured after a meal most constrictors are pretty damn lazy bastards, and another gator got it....... and they do sometimes if they are VERY hungry eat to fast and start while the animal is still barely alive. Mine has done it.
l600l 10-06-2005, 04:38 PM I doubt there was any clawing going on inside the snake. The python cant and wont eat an alligator alive. Pythons will strangle the prey until it stops breathing then swallow it slowly. What most probably happened here was that the snake ate the gator, either died naturally from the gator being way too big and not digesting it properly or was killed while resting by another animal, then after being dead in the water for days the pythons stomach ruptured open because it started rotting and also for the fact that the gator probably had that bitch stretched out like I have your mom every friday night. So there you have it. Glad I could clear this whole thing up. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/flipa.gif

My beagle is pretty damn smart. I think the beagle is a good idea. They've got the schnoz to sniff them out, and the speed to run circles around them. And I don't think there's a beagle dumb enough to approach an animal that large.
