I'm not sure if it is different during the non spring break season but when i was there you couldn't go 2 feet without someone offering you any and every drug there is. The people I met there were all nice and respectful people. I stayed in Trelawny, which is not the biggest hotspot for tourists, but they do have a few resorts there. Look at Jamaica like you would the US....crime tends to be higher in the bigger cities. I met some really nice locals while I was there. The smoke? Well, I won't say it was the greatest I've ever had, but it was pretty cheap. I think it was something like $35-40 for a half ounce. When out shopping, the people will be a little pushy about getting you into their shop. However, after browsing around a bit inside, they don't twist your arm to buy something. A simple, "Thanks for letting me look at your things" got me out of every shop I went to. Overall, I loved it...better than Mexico. Haggle on the prices of shit they need the money and want the business. If you are on a resort you shouldn't need your wallet.
