I am in the market for a used car from 2003 and up. I will include my list and an opinion of the vehicle. Please feel free to add or substract from my opinion.

Evo - Most expensive, AWD, can leave it stock, 10/100K warranty is shortened when ownership is transferred, Mitsubishi Cars will probably not be around in ten years, hard to find. $23-24K.

WRX (non STi) - Nice, reliable, AWD, upgradeable to super sonic quickness for low dough, hard to find unmolested, great styling ('04-'05). $16-20K

1.8T - German engineering, fair reliability (coil packs), snobs drive them and the females like the Jetta (meaning I'd look like a girl), oldest design. $12-18K

SR4T - blistering speed for low cost mods, still a Neon, will probably fall apart and has the least reliability. Still look like a girl. Ultimate sleeper and the shock value could be priceless. $15-16K.

The Evo would be my choice; however, this baby is nearly $6-8K over the rest of the cars used. WRX probably my favorite choice for value. 1.8T for refinement - cheapest used at 2003 models. SR4T really really rare and I like to be different but I couldn't handle the humiliation http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif .

I bet if you looked @ an STi you'd be in the same price range as the Evo. That said, if a budget pocket rocket is what your after I would go with the WRX. Like your mentioned, you can easily and relatively cheaply upgrade it to be near STi trim.

I would stay away from anything German unless it's a BMW or Mercedes. I've heard about more electrical problems with VW/ Audi than I care to discuss (Pops was in the auto-business for 25 years).

As for the SRT4, fast... yes, cheap... yes. When I think SRT4 I think of my younger brothers high school parking lot and his friends who think they are the shit cause they are driving something with a turbo. Not sure what the reliablilty is like w/ Dodge nowadays... can't be worse than VW/Audi.

Good luck with whatever you get and don't forget to post some pics http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I have an '05 WRX. Cobb stage 2 only costs around $1500.00 and will give you around 225-230 all wheel hp. That will put you close to a stock STI, 350Z, etc. It's a fun car and is super cheap to hook up. They just changed the front end and motor for 2006 so you could probably get a smokin' deal on a new '05. I bought mine in April. Sticker was 26 and I walked out the door at 21.

PM me if you have questions or check out www.nasioc.com (http://www.nasioc.com) or www.clubwrx.net. (http://www.clubwrx.net.) I post under the same user name over there.

The 2006 front end is ugly the 2004 - 2005 is really nice.. I'm a member of CWRX. How did you get such a good deal on the Suby? Trade in? Shoot I'd go new if I could get that deal.

I work with the salesmans wife. I don't know if that played a part or not though. They were having a big sale that weekend and I went on Sunday afternoon right before closing and they still had 6 WRX's on the lot. I think they needed to get rid of them. With the '06 hitting dealerships now they should be looking to clear out the '05's quick.

Here's mine currently:

DEI Alarm
13% Tint
Alpine Flip Out DVD
JL 12" Sub
Perrin Lowering Springs
Kartboy Short shifter w/front and rear bushings
Intake elbow delete
DRL's disabled
Trunk debadged

Gonna get gauges, engine management, turbo back exhaust and rims/tires in that order. Hopefully within the next 6 months.

I love my car. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/hip.gif

Evo's are fast as shit but they're ugly imo. The interior isn't as nice as the WRX either. I've seen ones that are putting 600+ to the wheels though. Crazy!

I bought an 05 WRX wagon about 10 months ago, and an 05 WRX sedan fro my wife about 4 months ago. Bother are awesome, bothe drive the same. Bothe are still stock, but i think I'm gonna drop about 2 gran into my wagon soon. I still don't know what to do with it. Things are tons of fun, fairly good on gas, great in the snow and rain.

Stock seats suck. Coffee holder suck. my only gripes.

I have an 03 wrx with all the stage 2 goodies, lowered, and all that fun stuff. I love it. Nothing like passing 2wd suvs and trucks in the snow in a "ricer." Also being from arkansas where every other car is an old trans am or camaro, i love when they rev at me with their confederate flag tatoos and "my president is Charlton Heston" bumper stickers." Yea, with about 1200-1500 bucks you can turn a wrx into a mid 13 sec car that get about 27-28 mpg. Learn everything you could ever care to know at NASIOC.com

On that note I selling it. I get to bored to quick. It's been a great car.

my vote would either be the neon or the evo. everyone that I know that's had a VW product has hated it. and they don't honor the warranty very well. the only problem with the neon is that it's something you'd get in high school.... but if you can get past that it's a great bang for the buck so to speak.

you could get an 02-03 s2000 pretty cheap, then add in the comptech SC kit or a turbo kit...
ud have a small convertible, great handling, SC'ed or turbo'd 9000 rpm pocket rocket.....or get a k5 1000

Do NOT get the 1.8t

We traded the Wife's A4 1.8t auto because it was borderline dangerous with the power delivery. It was drive by wire and between that, the fact it was nutless because it was auto and high elevation and the turbo took for ever to come online.... I lost count of how many times we almost died pulling out into traffic or merging. From a stop, you hit the gas and there was about a second and a half delay (no exaggeration) before the ECU/engine would respond and actually start moving. Then, once it did it took another several seconds for the turbo to come online and make some power.

My vote having driven all of the rides you're checking out is go EVO... you won't be sorry.

The worst part of selecting the WRX or Evo is when you find them; they are impossible to find stock. Jeez. I should spring an extra $5K and buy new of either car. Used is the only way to go IMO.

yeah, SRT-4 is fast as hell stock and even faster with the stage2/3 upgrades while astill keeping factory warranty. WRX is the best if you want to retain cruise control and still have a car you can make super quick for a not so huge chunk of change. But of course you have to worry about how quickly that tank of $6 a gallon premium is gonna get sucked away. The WRX will not get loose EVER so far as I know. We actually tried to slide a used one here at the dealer i work for, in the rain and it wouldn't get loose. Might as well get one if that's what you want.

the problem i have with the WRX's and Evo's are that they are cheap performance cars.... meaning they are half ass.... unless, of course, u put down a wad of cash in aftermarket parts.

My friend's WRX that was pushing 400hp caught on fire under normal driving conditions. he spent upwards of 15 thousand on that car in parts and labor….it got totaled and the guy never even really got to use it.... the damn thing was always in the shop.....

If i wanted a fast car i'd just Caugh up the extra cash and but a car that designed to be fast. I baught a 3000gt VR-4 back in 1996 hmm maybe 1997 but the damn thing was fast for the time..... doesn't have a glass tranny and clutch like the WRX's

I would stay away from the Evo's. Mitsu is notorious for doing whatever it takes to get out of doing warrenty service where I am (So Cal) From what I've heard they go as far as to go to local drag strips and write down license plates/VINs so that when you take it in for a warranty service they'll deny your ass.

I cannot justify buying a Mitsubishi though. Of course everyone raves about the EVO, but everything else in their line-up is and was junk, except the Starion/Conquest. I knew three people with Eclipses: one had '93 ECU problems all the time, the other tranny went out 50K, and the last his engine blew up on a GST (probably his fault). From what I have been reading on the Evo is the only car made in Japan from the US Market.

I still don't know but I will post whatever I get. Thanks!

From what I hear the Brazilian facility is the best factory they have, even better than Germany's plant.

You guys think I should hop on this brand new deal? Dam car is black, but they do have a grey with leather. Purchasing a new car sucks.

Sounds like a good deal to me and the GTI is pretty sweet imo. I wouldn't buy another black car though. I've had 2 and they're way to hard to keep clean. Grey would be pretty sweet. A friend of mine has a Jetti 1.8T in that dark grey color and it looks pretty nice.

why not just go for an older than 99 car, and spend the rest on getting it back to tip top shape an mods. Like maybe an older supra, 300zx TT, mr2 turbo, 3000GT, rx7 turbo or something of the like. I have about 7 K in my 88 supra, purchased it non running, had the engine built, redid the suspension aftermarket, better brakes, 455 hp, and lots of other mods. Basically the entire drive train is new, and the rest of the car is in pretty damn good shape. I'm going to get a new paint job soon for it. When I am completly done, I will have probably 10k in it? Thats far less than you want to spend for a slower newer car.

Car of choice is the EVO. With the right stuff that th ing is PURE EVIL. For budgets the Neon has bang for the buck and could still whip some major ass.
