: Lasik + Riding?
PhynixBrd 08-17-2005, 05:14 AM I am about to have Lasik on Sat and was wondering if anyone here has had it. If so, how long did you wait before you rode?
Did you have problems with your eyes drying out?
Kidder 08-17-2005, 05:18 AM I waited until my eyes were healed and my vision had stabilized before I rode. You'll discover that the first week it will be very difficult to drive due to light sensitivity. Ask your doctor specific questions about activities that you want to do. For example, I had to wait a few months before I could start scuba diving again.
And, as far as eyes drying out, I haven't had any issues. I already suffered from chronic dry eyes before the surgery so I always take drops with me in case my eyes start to dry out.
Good luck with your surgery. It's the best money I've ever spent.
eye-man 08-17-2005, 07:09 AM keep us posted on how it works for you. i'm hoping to have it done someday.
PhynixBrd 08-17-2005, 07:14 AM Thanks for the info.
I will let you know sunday http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
Ibidu1 08-17-2005, 07:17 AM I had PRK done like lasik and I race. My vision is 20/20, goodluck with your surgery you"ll LOVE IT
Suzuki Duke 08-17-2005, 07:43 AM What about that other thing they advertise, cystal lens? I need glasses/contacts already, and I'm thinking about getting the surgery someday.
Ibidu1 08-17-2005, 07:55 AM Lasik they slice a very thin layer off the top of your eye. They evaluate your eyes and come up with a plan design to give you better eye sight. They take a laser and shape your eye into a football shape. They close back the thin layer and put steriods on the eyes.
That crystal lens I believe your taking about the process where they put a perm eye contact in your eye by sewing it on somehow.
I had to do PRK cause my cornea was too thin. Its same process as lasik, except for me they just grinded a top layer and then used the same laser to get that shape. I had it did and so did my whole family. None have had any problems and its been 6 years now. The surgery was very fast 15 min and I was done. Soon as I got up I was able to see.
Grandevil 08-17-2005, 08:09 AM Lasik soudns ouch.
PhynixBrd 08-17-2005, 08:09 AM I got lucky and my presrciption is only L -2.25 and r-2.5.
When I went for my Preop they scanned my eyes and got a computer image of them. The whole procedue is cool..... It only takes the laser about 5sec/ eye. I am SOOOOOOO stoked! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
coyn586 08-17-2005, 08:10 AM I raced at Willow Springs about 2 weeks after my lasik procedure.
PhynixBrd 08-17-2005, 08:11 AM Lasik soudns ouch.
A friend of mine had it done and said you don't feel anything.. They gave me a prescription of valume (sp).... so i should feel pretty good and not really care
reyd1 08-17-2005, 08:13 AM Usually when I have probs with my eyesight after lasix is when I get dehydrated. That is when I notice a difference in my vision. Only then, I get "dry eye"
RitzBitz 08-17-2005, 11:30 AM How old are you guys that had the lasik done? I'm 20 and have had horrible vision most of my life. I started wearing contacts about two years ago but my eyes are irritated by them very often. My doctor said I should wait till I get a little older to see if my eyes get better....
juniorace 08-17-2005, 01:47 PM I'd say that it would be best to wait about two weeks before riding. And only if you are wearing a helmet with shield. I wouldn't ride around with just eye protection on, cause the wind might dry your eyes out too much.
I had mine done back in December. 20/20 the morning after the surgery and still 20/20 as of last month. They will numb your eyes with numbing drops and give you some valium, then they will slice a flap in your cornea and move it to the side to do the laser procedure. Then they put the flap back in place and send you on your way. They give you steroid drops to aid the healing process plus some other drops to help with dryness. Also get a set of goggles to sleep in so that you don't rub your eyes or anything while sleeping. The only thing that I noticed was that my eyes felt somewhat "tired and dry" sometimes. That lasted for 3-4 weeks.
No pain at all with the surgery. Have you ever had them give you that puff of air on your eyes (glaucoma test I think)? Feels no worse than that.
raptor_6 08-17-2005, 08:00 PM I had PRK done last summer before I deployed to Iraq. The light sensitivity was pretty bad for about 5 days. Another problem was wind getting inside my helmet really dried my eyes out and irritated them. I ended up wearing sunglasses with my helmet and this helped alleviate the problem but not by much. Within 3 weeks, I was good to go. No issues with light or wind (lights of headlights at night were still very bright, but not a problem). I have worn glasses/contacts since I was 13. At 34 years old I finally got rid of all that stuff. I am now 20/15 and 20/20 in my eyes. Just amazing. Good luck!

I'm 41 and a perfect candidate for lasik. My prescription hasn't changed in 6 years. From what I've been told it's best if you're prescription has been stable for 2 years, maybe 3. Not sure on this though. Keep getting re-fitted for contacts, you probably don't have the correct fit yet. Maybe get your eye measured by another place. Also, you may need Patanol drops (prescription) to help your eyes deal with the contacts.
I had mine done about 6 years ago. Lasik just came out. I was 27 then.
It was great. There is risk, but with thelatest technology, risk is minimal.
Make sure that the machine the doctor is going to use is the VISX S4 machine
with the Customvue technology. They're the best lasik machine. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
Btw, I currently work for AMO (formerly VISX, Inc). I make the keycards
that doctors used for their patients. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
moistmaster 08-19-2005, 01:02 AM I had mine done about 4 years ago, the morning after I had 20/20 vision. It was a bit uncomfortable for a few days (like having sand in your eye) and a bit of sensitivity to light, but after a week I was back on my bike. The Doc's say don't do stuff too energetic.
Best money I spent, apart from my Gixers that is.
Jeremichi 08-19-2005, 01:11 AM How much does it cost because I want to have it done bad. My eye doctor said he's 80% sure that I can have it done but I have extremely large pupils so he said they might have to use a wider laser. I hate wearing my contacts and waking up in the middle of the night not being able to see anything.

Price varies on the procedure and your eyes. I had an astigmatism in both eyes, thin corneas, and 20/400 vision in each eye. So my cost was considerably higher due to all of my issues.
Also, shop around. I shopped around and actually went with the doctor I was most comfortable with and, of course, the equipment they use. There were cheaper places to go in the DFW area but I decided to go with the best. You only get one shot at it, don't you want the best?
Del La Sol 08-19-2005, 03:41 AM had a friend do it recently and he said he was in agony afterwards for a week and wouldn't do it again if he could... he must have gotten it done at the local Rims, Pagers, and Laski store or something

Crap....... all was good until..... This post. But I am still feeling confident. I am having it done tomorrow afternoon. I chose the Bauch&Lamb Wave laser. The cost is roughly 1300/eye.
Del La Sol 08-19-2005, 05:43 AM i'm thinking hard about it too but like someone else i was told to wait until i'm a little older... i hated to add that since everyone else only had positive things to say, but thats the closest lasik experience i've had

I had Lasik done about 3-4 years ago- no problems! It sounds like a really scary procedure, when it's described, but really it takes about 10 minutes and isn't bad at all. I started with 20/400 vision and came out with better than 20/20 in both eyes http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/banana.gif
If anyone is thinking of having it done, I'd highly recommend it. The consultation is free- and truthfully, that's the only sure way to know if you'd make a good candidate. I'll never forget the feeling of waking up from a nap that I took after surgery (the preferred method of healing the eyes- resting for 3-4 hours) and I could see EVERYTHING! If I remember correctly, my surgery cost about $750 per eye- and that was from a reputable ophthalmologist and included all of the post-op exams/follow-ups. I think that the most difficult part of the surgery, for me, was not being able to wear my contacts for a week before.
juniorace 08-19-2005, 12:25 PM Mine cost $3000 for a CustomVue procedure.
