The R makes it the high performance. The GSX with out the R is the call out for the Katana.

So, are you saying that the Katana was out before the GSXR?

From what I've read on here its something like
G - Grand
S - Sport
X - 4 valve head
R - Race

Correction, now that I think about it, the x is probably only for their inline 4 dohc 4 valve machines. So bikes like the gs500 and gsvr wouldn't have the x.

Actually, it was ('82, I think) but there were non-Katana GSXs before that date.

http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif Kinda sidestepping the topic here, but check out the 82/83 Kats sometime. Beautiful bikes, and nothing like the Kanotunas we know today. Almost bought one a few years ago, but I wasn't sure if I wanted another project bike at the time. When I decided I did, it was gone. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

This topic gets brong up all the time. In the short 3 years Ive been here Ive seen this question asked countless times. I was wondering how long b4 it would show up again since the last time it was asked.

So qouted from the last time it was asked:

"After the crashing the bike it means,

Get

Some

X-rays

Retard."

or "what the 1st test rider said in Japan after taking it around the course.

Gear Shift Xtra Rough."

Most people don't realize that the Hayabusa isn't a GSXR.... like the Katanna, its a GSX1300R. Except the Katanna, doesn't have the R.

I knew what the X was for, I once read the X in Honda NSX was for experimental and figured it was similar to all bad azz rides. And duh, R is for racing.
