I'm a newbie so any help would be great, i've got an 04 gsx-r 600 and i'm trying to find out if a 200 rear will fit. Also, wondering if an HID kit is a pain in the ass or worth it. Any pics of either would be great. tks

Nope.

You would not want to fit a 200 size tire on that rim unless that was teh stock tire size. When you fit a larger tire on you are actually squishing it, makiing the tire bow in the middle giving you a smaller contact patch and changing the way to bike steers into corners. You just don't want to do it.

It'd be pretty fucked up to squeeze a 200 series tire onto a 5.5 inch rim. Even if you could, I don't think it'd clear the swingarm.

The HID kits look ok in pictures, but I'm not sure if it's worth the $$ and the hassle. Those damn things are blinding as hell coming at you, but I guess they're nice to have shining on what you want to see.
