The bike. What makes a bike a motard bike? Whats so different from it and a regular dirt bike?

It's a dirt bike with smooth almost street tires on it to run on dirt and road surface. I think anyway??

Not sure about the dirt part but I always thought a motard was a dirt bike with street tires. Like my fiddy http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Pretty well summed up already but yes, it's a dirtbike that they mount 17 inch rims with street rubber on them and usually a larger diameter brake disc up front. Alot of supermoto races are strictly on asphalt but some are a combination of both street and some small dirt jumps.

Exactly... And I think that these will be as big as sportbikes here in a few years... I was trying to get a KTM 625, but the dealerships could not get one in..

I rode the new Suzuki Motard bike, it was a blast.. Can lean that shit so far over, and wheelies galour!!!!!

a motard is your typical big bore dirt bike with 17 inch wheels as someone mentioned, they are a ball to ride
ps if someone is looking to build on i'm selling my 426f! for cheap... and all you need to do is throw 17 inch wheels and ride!

I've never ridden a motard but I could see where they would be a blast.

The rules are what makes the Motard bikes single cylinder. The SMX450 is a twin (as is the 550) and of course the KTM 950 SM, but it's not really a Motard. Most of the fast guys also rework the suspension and have less travel than stock. I actually have and race a motard (SMUSA #691), at least I will race it as soon as they quit putting the races on the same weekend as the CCS races. I have a motard track behind my house (subdivision under construction with paved & unpaved streets along with jumps from the dirt piles). If I had a street legal one I probably wouldn't have a license for long what with the wheelies, stoppies and backing it into corners (not myfault, it just begs you to do it). http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I take it you didn't catch the supermoto part of the X-Games. That was a damn good race. Too bad the supercross guys dominated it. McGrath was amazing coming back to get on the podium. I really wish E-Boz could have made it onto the podium though.

I wish there were some supermoto tracks around here, that's something I could defintely get into. I think my next bike will definitely be a motard. Well I'm building my fiddy up to be a mini-motard, but it could use a big brother.

Over here they race motards (full-size, not only minis) on kart tracks... http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif They are THAT flickable...

As I've written here before, I'm converting my old Honda XL600R to a motard, just for the hell of it. It's an '84, so I don't want to throw too much money at it for Excel rims, etc. So far I have changed the front wheel and brake (along with some smaller parts), using a rim off a GS500E http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Same axle diameter, so I just had to make spacers. Made an adapter for the caliper as well because the GS wheel has a 310mm rotor while the XL only had a 260mm stock...

The fork got upgraded as well with stiffer springs and I've put a street tire on the stock XL rear rim so far. The bike is a blast to ride - only has ~45HP (it's a single, and an old one at that - but with a 4-valve OHC head and dual carbs) but also only weighs ~320lbs - wet http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif With small 17" up front it's VERY flickable compared to with the stock 21" wheel... Of course the braking has also improved a lot with the bigger rotor

I have a GS500E swingarm with rear wheel and brake as well, but I haven't had time for that. Have to change a couple of gaskets in the engine first and because the frame is of the old "backbone" type, the engine has to come out for that http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/plthumbsdown.gif Oh well, I'll get around to it...

This is the most up to date pic I have, taken with my cell phone so the quality isn't too great - should give you an idea of it, though...

Motrads are a blast to ride. I took one out a couple of weeks ago. I can't believe how agile they are. I'm actually thinking of buying one myself. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I converted a 426 to a motard, it's not as cheap as you'd think--wheels, tires, brakes, etc... If you want to race it you'll need to look into other stuff as well. I eventually made the bike street legal, but couldn't keep the front wheel down. I called it "look over your shoulder fun" because that's what I found myself doing all of the time. In the twisties it would smoke the sportbikes, I loved seeing the look on the face of a squidly R1 rider as they get smoked by a "dirtbike"... http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
