Was thinking about taking mine off next time I have the rear wheel off just because I've always hated the looks of them. Any drawbacks to having it off? Do you guys find that you end up with chain lube flung everywhere? catch your boot on the chain accidentally?

thanks

Chain lube flings all over the place... it's a pain in the ass to clean up. I took mine off for a couple days last year and couldn't stand having to clean the shit off after every ride. I don't think it would really do anything in the event the chain breaks... especially if it's one of the plastic jobs

Yeah, that's what I was worried about. I guess I'll leave it in place then.

I've had mine off all of this year(season) so far. Yeah, you have to clean the lube off all the time. I'm actually putting a hugger with a chain guard built in so no more worrying about cleaning that stuff off all the time. As far as catching your boot on the chain....I think that would be hard to do. You would almost have to try to do it I would think.

No chain guard on my track bike, and no mess either, but then I don't log the miles that you normally would on the street... http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

when ya put your chain lube on use a toothbrush n rub it in real goodn take yr time then use a clean rag and wipe it off n you will neverr get any on your bike at all ya just have to apply it correctly as it says in the owners manual

I took mine off the day I brought the bike home..
I've never had any problems w/ chain lube flying off.
Just keep your chain clean & let the wax set in before going out.
I usually clean/wax he chain after a long day's ride & let it sit overnight.

Also, your foot shouldn't be that far back to be even close to the chain.
I have a size 13 boot & the insides of my ankles rest nicely on the tops of the rearsets...

Does anybody think the chain guard is there for anything other than protecting from lube fling?
It's not called a chain lube guard.....

I've been wanting to take mine off since I got my bike. I hate taking it on an off to clean my chain. In fact, I just broke one of the little tabs that snap into the swingarm. When you clean your chain do you take the guard off? I just always assumed you would to make it easier. Can you replace the two snap in tabs with screws like the rear fastner?

Just get a hugger with a built-in chain guard. Looks much better and keeps road dirt away from the shock and tail http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

One other thing to consider..... If the chain snaps - and they do from time to time - you could end up with a chain wrapped round your leg and/or wheel spoke.

Over 100,000 miles here and no broken chain yet. I've got a box with about 10 brand new chain guards if anyone's interested. A friend lost a master link on a chain and it ripped through the chain guard like it was a piece of, ummm......plastic. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

A chain guard will also keep a lot of road grime off the chain keeping it cleaner and lasting longer.

I've taken them off both the bikes I've owned. Haven't had any problems as far as lube everywhere. I usually use chain wax, and do what the can says--- spray on and wipe off the excess.

Holy old thread!

I took mine off, if your chain is clean it won't throw off more than a few specks of dirt on the undertail.

randomly spray chain lube all over your chain and it will randomly spray all over your bike.

be precise and circumspect with its usage and you will have no problems.
