: Lowering with stock dogbones
Got Gix 06-08-2005, 12:37 PM I was jsut wondering if its possible to drill holes in stock dogbones to lower your bike. I know thier cheap but If I could do it myself, Id rather. I guess my question is about durability? Also would like to know if anyone could give me the distance between holes for a 3" drop.
tmdrake 06-08-2005, 05:29 PM the dog bones have to be longer 1/4 inch longer is about an inch
Got Gix 06-09-2005, 12:07 PM HaHa, my bad. I just looked at the rear shock and saw how that works. Well I guess Ill have to buy a set, sure woulda been nice to save a few dollars though.
My buddy got a 2nd set of bones from a scrapyard and had some extension's welded into them. They are working good holding up +10 swingarm.
What type of bike you on? I got some in my garage that'll fit an oilcooler.
Got Gix 06-11-2005, 05:49 AM I have an 04 750. I also have a 7"-9" swingarm extention that Ill be installing soon so I need to see how that will affect the bike. I am an experienced welder and have though of fabricating my own dogbones but I dont have the equipment to do this.
Is there anything I should consider that I might have overlooked with having a swingarm extention and drop links?
SpeedLink Kris 06-12-2005, 02:31 PM WTF IF YOU GUYS CANT AFFORD SOME GOOD QUALITY LINKS EMAIL ME AND ILL HELP YOU OUT, WHAT YOU ARE DOING IS COMPLETELY UNSAFE! this is the worst thread i have read ever, welding two links togeather is down right rediculous
Got Gix 06-15-2005, 01:51 PM speedlink kris: Dude I dont have a clue as to what your talking about. Unless I missed something, nobody said anything about welding chain links together. Were talkin about dogbones and swingarm extentions.
neicey 06-15-2005, 06:10 PM i think he is talking about welding the lowering links/dogbones together not chain links.
SpeedLink Kris 06-17-2005, 11:30 AM lowering "links"/dogbones???why would i be talking about chains? go ahead and weld two dogbones togeather. i guess youve never seen what happens when they break ive gotten pictures of peoples bikes after crappy ones broke, thanking me for how good mine are and what happened to previous bikes that had garbage dogbones on them. you can imagine what would happen when your rear tire slams into your undertail going 50, for a couple bucks you dont have to worry about it. hey but what do i know
forrestang 06-18-2005, 02:42 AM I'm agreeing with Kris on this one. I just put some bones on my boy's bike yesterday, and it costed about $45 to lower his whole bike(the links were 45 bucks).
And lowering the front can be done for free.
If u really want to save every penny u can, don't weld two links together. Go and get some good aluminum stock or some strong steel from Home depot and cut and drill that.
U can proabbly get some for 6-10 bucks.
SpeedLink Kris 06-19-2005, 03:07 PM make sure its atleast 6061 too or better. i use 7075 because of more titanium.
an interesting fact, aluminum is the most abundent material in the world and its man made.

Just kidding, I use Pro-E a lot, and when I create drawings from actual parts, it complains when I dimension something twice.
neicey 06-28-2005, 03:56 PM personally i would buy lowering links they dont cost much.
