I got the KOBE back protector from Marietta Motorsports (http://www.1888fastlap.com) and it doesn't really take up much room at all. Maybe 1/2 inch or so.

So if the 44 fits snug without it I should get the 46... 2" seems like alot of room to have in a one piece to me...

I would go with a Bohn or Knox back protector. They are CE european safety standard approved and I have tested my Bohn at 90ish mph from a highside and damn was I glad to be wearing that. My cheap ass casual riding leathers came out indistinguishable after that wreck. Highly reccomended. The total damage to my Bohn protector was the nylon mesh at the tailbone area was roadrashed off. Protector was ready for another round. I will not ride with cheap ass leathers anymore. Get a back protector and always wear it PERIOD! images/icons/tongue.gif

No. 1/2" = one half inch. I noticed no difference in the fit of my 2 piece suit.

My vanson's have built in back protectors, but when its really hot, I wear a Dianese backspace S protector. It has transversal joints on the waist so it flexs and most importantly, its cool & comfortable. I've hit the ground twice and both times I'm glad I had it on!!

I've got the long version of the Knox for the track...otherwise it will hang out of the bottom of a jacket. I bought it after I got the leathers and I didn't notice any fit problems, even though the leathers were snug. Some of the others may be thick enough to cause a problem.

Commuting around town I have a short Dianese that doesn't have any upper straps. It's easy to wear under a jacket but only covers the lower part of your back.

On second thought...not sure I quoted the Knox correctly, it may be the Bohn. Anyway it's the thinner one with the carbon kevlar pads. Fits easily under leathers because it's so thin.

Either way it's good to hear that you're buying some saftey gear. I've got to go hit the bank myself because my new helmet just came in images/icons/grin.gif

Don't forget to replace your helmet every five years.

I use the Spidi Airback (about $130), and love it...does not take up much room and you can use it under your jacket on street rides...
