: Leather gloves & taking care of 'em

I've had quite a few pairs of leather gloves (nothing fancy, rather cheap ones), most of 'em were O'Neals. Strangely, sometimes, after taking the gloves off, they'd get all hard and carton-like, especially after riding in the rain. And then they'd break or wear out.

Am I supposed to take better care of them (should I use some sort of leather protecting substance), or am I just buying shitty gloves?

How about those cool looking, thick leather racing gloves? If any of you own them, do you use anything at all to keep 'em in shape? Or do you just wear them on and off without further care?

I'd hate to spend lots of dough on a pair of fancy gloves just to have them break six months later. (This happens mostly in the palm area).

Any advice? Thanks!

newenough.com has some great close-out prices on Tecknic race gloves (~$66, normally ~$130) so I just ordered an extra pair. You should check it out, hopefully they'll have your size and style. I haven't done anything w/ my current pair of gloves and they seem just fine...don't stink. I don't ride in the rain though

I have a pair of JR Speedmaster race spec gloves, and I don't take care of 'em either. I've been caught in rainstorms before and it had no effect on the gloves. I just made sure that they air-dried properly and they were ready to go again.

After a year of owning 'em, they're still nice and supple. They probably have a coating of that 3M Scotchguard protectant thing from the factory.

Go figure. Now it turns out I've been buying cheap gloves. images/icons/wink.gif I'll definitely look into buying some decent gloves. The only thing that sucks is that prices here are about 30-50% higher than in the states. (for example, a kryptonite lock here costs $55 --that's U.S.$-- while I've seen them on the 'net for $33). images/icons/shocked.gif

Riding in Mexico... hmmm.... images/icons/rolleyes.gif

thanks for the advice. images/icons/grin.gif

You guys definitely knew what you were talking about! Thanks!

I went on to buy those fancy, pricey leather gloves. I found a SPIDI dealer in my area and ordered some mean looking gloves with hard-plastic knuckes. Definitely one of the best investments in my life.

Not only have they endured, well, way over 6 years in top shape without any maintenance whatsoever, they made all the difference in the world bike-wise. So if you've never used decent leather gloves and are thinking about it, think no more and go get the best gloves you can. Believe us, you'll thank yourself you did! (I know I do!) :biggrin
