: Helmet help!!!!!
gixxerfever 01-02-2002, 12:15 AM what's the best helmet outhere, arai, shoei, fm, suomy, axo, bell, bieffe, vemon, agv, airoh, etc. does anyone have a comparison table or article i can look at? also does anyone know wher to buy axo helmets? besides the uk?
I remember seeing an Article write up on lids, they didn't really say which was the "best" but rated the Arai Quantum f one of their fave's even better than the Rx7 which Arai claims is their top of the line, their reason was the Noise differences, The Rx7 is pretty noisy with all the air flow.
Sorry no link for the article though, maybe someone will be able to post it for you though
**DONOTDELETE** 01-02-2002, 12:26 AM I was pretty happy with my Arai until the clip down on the visor kept coming off and breaking. Bugger that so I'm going Shoei or AXO I hope.
Rc51Rob 01-02-2002, 12:29 AM im pretty happy with my RX7.
rayder 01-02-2002, 12:33 AM Sportrider helmet shootout (http://www.helmetharbor.com/helmetratings/helmetranking.htm)
gixxerfever 01-02-2002, 12:33 AM i've been hearing a million good things about the AXO helmets but i can't find a distributor in the us, i used to have a motocross axo lid and it was great. but i'm pretty much sold on either the arai or axo.
r1owner 01-02-2002, 12:37 AM I ordered an OGK helmet from dexdirect.com (UK) with no problems whatsoever. I wouldn't let the fact that you can't buy them in the states stop you.
Carnage 01-02-2002, 01:41 AM I've had nothing but HJCs in the past but nothing I've ever put on felt as good as my Arai Quantum F. images/icons/grin.gif images/icons/wink.gif
WaynesNside 01-02-2002, 01:47 AM I love the way some of the Arai's look, now how they are making changes I am thinkig of getting a Shoei, Dahamel Replica. I also have a HJC now.
Hunter 01-02-2002, 02:09 AM AXO's website here.
http://www.axo.com/products/requestcatalog.asp
has information about their phone number and address.

there was a Cycle World, or SportRider, or Motorcyclist issue a few months back that did a helmet shootout! If i had it, i would scan it in for you.. but the magazine is boxed up somewhere.
kidphc 01-02-2002, 02:12 AM I've always bought shoei's and loved them. Bought a Quantum F and it was awesome. However, that crap about the internet sales and Arai... graemlins/piss.gif
The HJC I had was ok, the quantum has spoiled me though.
Hunter 01-02-2002, 02:14 AM i just noticed the KneeDraggers banner ad that rotates around here has AXO in it.. so they must sell them as well.
Hammer 4 01-02-2002, 02:14 AM Ditto re: the Arai Quantum...just get one that fits the best.... images/icons/grin.gif
natas 01-02-2002, 04:47 AM OGK helmets are up there w/ARAI's, just kinda hard to find here in the states, I had to get mine out of Illinois.
Leonardo629 01-02-2002, 06:56 AM I think Arai's RX7 is the best helmet out there, and due to the racing nature of it, it's kinda noisy...but I never ride without my ear plugs anyways..
MStingray 01-02-2002, 07:13 AM Have an AGV X-Vent and just bought an Arai RX7. Both are top of the line models of the companies helmet line. Comfort is definitely better in the Arai and already feels "broken in" and I've only worn it a few times (had the X-Vent for almost a yr). A little noisier but w/ so many little doo-dads, flips and levers it's not surprising. You definitely pay for the comfort of an Arai though. Bought my RX7 for $424 fromKRS (http://www.kiernanracing.com/) but my X-Vent costed half that.

GixxerRydin2k2 01-02-2002, 12:02 PM The Arai Quantum F has spoiled me, nothing i've tried has come close to being as comfortable. The price made me want to graemlins/crying.gif though.
good luck,
John

isn't axo snell and dot approved?, if not that would suck and i'd have to buy yet another common, dime a dozen arai images/icons/frown.gif

Lizard 1 01-02-2002, 03:59 PM There's a growing consensus that Snell is not the best form of testing in the helmet industry.
As far as having Snell approval for racing, that is no longer the case for groups like AMA, CCS, WERA, and other org's that follow similar rules on helmets that the AMA does. For example, we are sponsored by Suomy and their helmets have the BSI certification which is done over in Europe, etc. This certification is done by a Gov't body which checks batches before shipment as apposed to what Snell does - they only check 2% of a manufacturer's total # of helmets if that. It really turns out to be about .3% when you check it out.
So, helmets like AXO, OGK and Suomy that have the BSI and gold standards, those helmets are actually more thouroughly tested by a gov't body vs. Snell that is an independant group. These helmets will pass tech at most groups that sanction racing here in the USA.
Personally, with Arai, you are buying a name and in fact, many other companies like Suomy build helmets that actually exceed the standards of Arai for a lot less money. Plus, for those interested, wait until Suomy unvails their NEW Spec1R. Super, super cool and will blow away Arai in both performance, but in price as well. Stay tuned!
fun2fly 01-02-2002, 04:44 PM Yeah, I'd live to have one of those Arai's as well but they are around $1000-$1100 here in Canada, phuc that. I know a lot of people say you can't put a price on your head but that is outrageous. If I could get one for what you guys get them for I'd have one too. If there was a $3000 helmet would you get that over the $400 Arai?? I'm getting a HJC for around $300 CDN. Snell and DOT approved. My main concern is that I want a helmet to be as quit as possible, any suggestions?
CHiPZ 01-02-2002, 07:48 PM I think I still have the helmet test and write motorcyclis or sport rider did, I'll look for it.
MStingray 01-03-2002, 08:20 AM You can't get em in the states? KRS (http://catalog.kiernanracing.com/browseGroup.cfm?item_group_id=52292) is having a closeout sale on em.
as for getting a quiet (i assume) helmet, you can always wear earplugs. when you buy an expensive helmet, it's for comfort, features and graphics.

Lizard 1 01-03-2002, 10:16 AM Just remember that mags like Sport Rider and the other "comic books" here in the States have a tendancy to support through sponsoring dollars those companies that help them. Mags overseas like Bike, Superbike and Two wheels have a tendancy to be more critical and a bit more harsh in their statements about products. Plus, they have the ability to get more products there than here. I.E. OGK, X-Lite, etc.
