: Evil sound on start-up...HELP ! I want to ride!

Okay, The gixxer's been dormant for about two weeks. I plumbed an oil line to the rear. During this procedure I had the tank, seat, carbs and airbox off. No other parts were removed. So I go to fire it up a moment ago and the noises were something like...

normal sound of starter (about 3 seconds worth), followed by a "snap" which had a metallic quality to it. After that nothing. No further starter sound. Nothing.

I thought about the work that was done and decided that I'd try it again.

So, as the starter button is thumbed, it wants to turn the starter. At least that is what it sounds like, and the lights dim to black as long as the starter button is pressed(duration of attempt...5 seconds). But it won't turn over and there's power in the battery.

Is there a pawl, or some sort of part that might have let go?

I've got both a Clymer and a Suzuki factory service manual. I just need a point of reference to begin.

How Fucked am I??

Hmmm... that metallic snap sound can't be good. Take her in!

you wouldn't possibly have dropped something into the intakes when you had the airbox/carbs off? It definitely does not sound good. Based on what you've said, that would be my guess.

Good luck images/icons/frown.gif

sounds like the starter clutch blew.....the lights dimming when you hold the starter button down would seem to indicate that the starter's spinning (listen very closely and you'd be able to hear it spin), but it's the job of the starter clutch to engage the starter to the crank....

or it could be that you've stripped the teeth on the starter shaft....

first, check to make sure that the starter is actually spinning.

if it is, you can start by pulling the starter and checking the teeth on the shaft.....if that's okay, the problem is almost definitely with the starter clutch...

Oh wait! That's it. There was a tube of BB's that must have rolled in like on that Miata. images/icons/rolleyes.gif

Nope. I had rags stuffed in them to keep crap out. I removed the rags upon reassembly.

I'd hate to pay someone else to deal with an issue I can repair. I just can't diagnose it.

check to see if you get power to the starter.

what confuses me is " plumbed an oil line " why ? and from where to where . Were those rags shirts with or had buttons ?
It sounds as if the engine is jammed , do not try and start it again until you find the cause of the bind , if it does turn over you may cause alot more damage than you already have .

Remove the crank access plug (if correct year or pull cover) and turn the engine over gently with a wrench to see if its locked-up(both directions but dont hit starter again after this), if it feels stuck whatsoever, do as said above & remove the starter cluch gear covers, good possibilty it might have kicked back(can happen if batt is low) damaging a starter driver gear or teeth. Then repost so you can get further info

first check the fuse then the solenoid. then try turning the motor with a wrench
