: Theft Prevention?
NERVOUS 06-05-2001, 06:14 AM I'm looking for advice on theft prevention. Aside from locking your bike in a garage (Which, by the way, is not an option to me since I only have a carport.), what is the best method for preventing theft?
Who makes the best bike lock? Kryptonite?
Any and all advice appreciated... Thanks!

NotoriousREV 06-05-2001, 08:39 AM OK, first thing to realise is: If they really want your bike, they will take it. But that doesn't mean you have to make it easy for them.
My advice is keep the bike out of sight, have a ground anchor fitted, and buy the biggest, strongest lock and chain you can. Abus and Kryptonite are amongst the best. Fit a disc lock too (just remember to remove it when you ride!). You can also fit a clutch lock, leave the bike in gear, and fit the lock, you can't then push the bike anywhere. Fit a good alarm (I won't give brands as they probably different in the US to over here. Is Datatagging available in the US, or Smartwater? And above all, get theft cover! Your bike may still go missing, even after all that as there's little defence against some big guys with bolt cutters and a van.
Hopefully, someone else in your neighbourhood will have a nice bike without the security which means theirs will go before yours.
Hope this helps.

Jon no h 06-05-2001, 08:46 AM Abus and Kryptonite are two of the best in terms of chains. Get a cover, too. Out of sight, out of mind. What you really want to achieve is a pain in the ass for a thief. Hopefully he will move on to an easier target. Like NotoriousREV said, if they want it, they'll take it. You just gotta make it as hard as possible.

ok, now that that one's out of the way.. which smartass is gonna say "oh, i sit at the window with a shotgun", or "tie a pitbull to it"
how's the theft rate in LA? i imagine your're probably not living between Hollywood superstar actors... i'd definately keep a cover on it, get the floor anchor with a big bad ass Kryptonite chain. a disc lock couldn't hurt either. but like was said, if someone "really" wants it, there are tools to cut through ANY chain or cable that you can buy. ever use a plasma cutting torch before??? http://www.gixxer.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

Maddog 06-05-2001, 11:15 AM absolutely get a nasty cover for it.....
the best prevention is for them not to want it, because whoever said it is correct, if they see it and want it, they can get it.
It takes four guys, a truck, and some bolt cutters like 3 minutes to have that bike in the back of a truck and gone.
So, put it under an nasty ugly cover.....
I'v seen some people take a new cover and paint it and do all sorts of shit to it so it looks extra nasty...
who would keep a $10,000 bike under that?
Then yes, all the rest.
Bolted to something thick, big, and mounted to the ground.

Phinsup 06-05-2001, 01:16 PM If it's mainly underneath your carport that you're worried about I would stick and alarm on it an lock it to a post or something, don't know what your setup is like but if you could concrete a good piece of one inch rebar into the cround and lock to that. If you've got the alarm on and you're home you'll hear that. It's either that or close in the carport! My old neighbor bought a storage shed for his bike because there was no room in the garage, but it ran him about $750.00.

Mr Fast 06-05-2001, 03:20 PM Oxford makes the floor anchor from hell (http://lockitt.com/FAAnchorforceLpic.htm) or you could get the wheel anchor (http://www.lockitt.com/FAdefianceLP.htm). Abus makes a serious chain & padlock (http://www.abus.com/abus/usa/menu/motorcycle_locks/products/super%20magnum/super_magnum_chain_and_padlock.htm). You can get a disc lock (http://www.abus.com/abus/usa/menu/motorcycle_locks/products/quick/quick_page.htm) for the front, too. I also recommend an alarm with pager and microwave motion sensor.

Whatever you do, do not buy the Xena disc lock. I wasted $70 on the piece of shit.
The alarm is bullshit and the disc lock is like any other average lock.

also, get theft insurance....

First of all. Whoever said "if they want it they will get it" is right. Here are a few things I highly recommend.
1. Buy a baby monitor and put the transmitter in the trunk and the receiver next to your bed of course. You also might want to check out 10X.com or X10.com not sure, but they have micro survaleince camera's with a built in microphone for about $80.00. Did I say they were cordless? They are.
2.Cobra link chains and Krypto cables are a joke don't bother.
3.If you use a Krypto "U" lock, make sure it is not just hanging onto the rim. Make it a tight fit. Like starting from one side of the swing arm, through the rim and out the other side. This way there is no or very much leverage to break it.
4. A cover is a great idea. But to make it better put a broom stick under it to give it a apperance of a goldwing or something.
5. It's also a good idea to but in a secret switch that will dissable you bike.

Kennedy 06-06-2001, 02:59 AM Lock it to something solid. Make sure the cahin / cable runs through something solid on the bike. On my 1k, I pass it through the swingarm brace.
I ve heard of guy coming home to a rear wheel locked where the bike use to be.

GSXR1118 06-11-2010, 12:33 AM disc lock and insurance
Something that I did was I took my webcam and set it up facing out my window to the bike. Not a deterrent, but I leave it on and it helps me keep an eye on any suspicious activity throughout the day. If something does happen hopefully the video will help. Other than that I use a kryptonite lock, alarm and cover.
Reckless15 06-27-2010, 10:58 AM I work back-shift and we were all sitting outside on our break and the front of the building has an indent in it where the entrance and exit doors are so we sit there and they were all talking about my bike and they said "arne't you worried about it beeing out here? one of the other guys said what is there to be worried about and at this exact moment I see a car come in the parking lot(this was at 2-3am in the morning on a friday night) and slow right down by my bike and almost come to a complete stop, and right then I said "Things like this!"(and pointed to the car looking at my 07 gsxr-600.
They looked up and seen us standing outside and drove off and parked at the end of our parking lot casually.
This is at a grocery store, so I was working my aisle and I can see my bike outside because I park it outside the big windows on the front of the building at the end of my aisle and I noticed car lights and it was that same car!! they did it twice but I couldn't get a plat off it it was to dark and their plate light was to dim or dirty.
Luckily I have theft on it but thats not really the point... just the fact of having your bike stolen is what would get to me!

Otacon k3 08-10-2010, 08:58 PM The only thing that sucks about theft insurance. It doesn't prevent you from having to walk home, or bum a ride.
AdamNeisler 08-23-2010, 08:50 AM 1. Get an Old Ass Cover that looks like crap. (always keep bike covered) $30-Free
2. Get a bike alarm that has a Motion Sensor so if someone walks up to your bike the alarm shits a brick and goes off bringing attention to the bike and anyone near it
3. Get a nice big chain and secure it through something sturdy on ur bike and chain it to something nice and strong.
4. Get a concealed licenses permit and carry a handgun on you at all times. Last thing you want to do is see someone drive off with your bike and their isn't shit you can do about it.

Well you still cant shoot. The situations got to be life or death. And if the person isnt on your property/in your house and directly trying to harm you, forget about using a gun to stop bike theft. Unless youre on the bike and theyre trying to take it from you.

But really, park it out of sight, (In the backyard, and have your windows opens w/ the lights on.) Maybe get a human cardboard cutout and stick it somewhere by the window.

Put no trespassing signs on your yard (Cop told me here in Texas, if people don't oblige to this rule, we are allowed to pew pew them if they still come on our land.)
