I have a 2000 GSX-R 750 and I'm trying to find out what the purpose/function of the Regulator / Rectifier is??

Reason, last week the bike acted like it didn't want 2 start. After I cut it off and tried to restart it again, it wouldn't. The lights on the speedo started dimming and shortly went out after trying to restart it. After jumping the battery I noticed the same thing happening again. Its basically draining my battery.

Well, I also noticed that the B/W wire on the harness side of the Regulator / Rectifier was getting so hot it started melting the connector.

I'm trying to narrow down what the possibilities could be?? 1. Regulator / Rectifier, 2. Bad ground, or 3. Bad generator.

Any advise would help..

Thanks

similar issue with my 01 gsxr 750. The rectifier converts the electrical charge from the stator from alternating current (ac) to direct current (dc) and then maintains the charge on the battery.

I was left dead on the side of the road several times. Charged the battery, rode fine for a bit, and then was dead again. Exposed all my electrical system and noticed the rectifier smoking. The battery would only show about 11V while running at 5000 RPM...not good. replaced the rectifier and now have about 13.2 volts on the battery at 5000 rpm and around 12 at idle. It isn't great but I also noticed my battery cells were dry when I was trouble shooting the initial problem so I don't have a perfect battery. I will get a new battery this spring but it should work until then.
