: Aftermarket clip-ons...why should I get them?

I am slowly trying to add aftermarket products to my street bike to make it a better track bike and then ultimately it will be my track bike. I've already added some decent trackday mods such as Vortex rearsets, steel lines, full Hindle system (mapped) with PCIII, rebuilt forks and shock with Race Tech internals, and Chicken Hawk tire warmers as a start. I am wanting to know if adding adjustable clip-ons will make turning the bike easier on the track or what are the benefits or cons to aftermarket clip-ons.

Probably won't make the bike easier to turn but they will provide better location adjustment ability.

#1 reason is probably because it is cheaper to replace the bars when you crash

They are also lighter

Not to change the subject but you might want to look into a used set of race fairings for your bike.

Sell the tire warmers, buy some bodywork.

Ive been racing for a few years. still don't use warmers and i kick all sorts of ass........ass of people who do use them http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

i have a set of vortex on my street bike (for the look), and a set of woodcraft on my track bike (easier to take on and off) and i feel the bike does fall into the corners easier because of the increased weight and leverage the clip-on add.

If you can feel the weight difference of your clip-on's. You better contact Suzuki racing....because you should be a test pilot.

I honestly doubt anyone can tell the diffy of the 1 to 1.5lb diffy that drop of your bike.

I just replied to this post and my post disappeared....wtf...???

Anyway, all I said was, ignroe this lunatics advice. Keep the tire warmers. There is no point in trying to heat up your tires on the track only to crash trying. Save the money on the clip-ons and get cheap bodywork and a lap-timer..... http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

I switched back from after-market clipons to the OE's because I prefered them.

I'm such an ass...I do have Hotbodies bodywork, just forgot to mention it. Thanks for the input though. I plan on getting a timer in about a month.

thanks for the sarcasim but i am pretty sure but by adding clip-ons which drop the bars and increase the angle you lean over does increase the weight on the front of the bike. which i why a lot of people do not like after market clip-ons do to the presure put on the wrist

I hope that youre really fast on track mate.

There is nothing funnier than passing a guy who moments earlier you saw removing his tyre warmers.
You cant make up for lack of talent by throwing money at your bike.

(im not accusing you of this by the way, obviously i dont know you. this thread just reminded me of those guys)

Yeah, because tire warmers have nothing at all to do with reducing the heat cycles of your race tires. Those that race have so much money to blow on tires every weekend anyway. It even has less to do with not having to worry about warming up the tires on the track and wondering (are they warm yet). http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/wtf.gif

Tire warmers and a lap timer..............equation for a nice crash out of a trackday rider.

If you are not racing.....you need neither.

If you are just doing track days, do a lap...or lap and a half and your tires will be plenty warm. And if you are not racing......you will likely be using them past the optimum heat cycle stages anyhow. Even with warmers they are only at optimum grip for like 3 or 4 cycles.

Ive got away with no warmers racing and i run the tires for a solid 15 cycles....and still do fine. Heck i prob change them most of the time because i "think " i should.

And a lap timer......that is gonna get you upside down or on your side.

Not trying to sound like an ass. But unless you are racing and looking to improve for a given reason........a move up in place. Have someone time you. Charging that hard at a trackday makes crashes happen....then everyone is out time while they clean up the mess.

Rock on!

I disagree. When all of us started out on trackdays I'm sure most of us were working hard on the bike just to get around the track. After a half a season or a full season of track riding you get smoother and faster (even if its a couple of seconds). If you aspire to improve on the track OR one day start to club race then how are you to know you are improving without a lap timer...especially when there are multiple transponders on the track and you can see what is working and what is not in certain parts of the track. A person timing you is not accurate and can't give you split times if they can't see you on the track. When everyone is in the same group...who is left to time you?

As a trackday rider, I don't have the benefit of a warm up lap to get my tires up before my session. As for me using tire warmers, if it brings my tires up to temp faster and gives me peace of mind to concentrate on other aspects of track riding then good for me. I just know that in your case....you are the exception as most racers use warmers so I'll stick with the majority on this one and if I have the means I will get any equipment that will improve my riding whether it's bike performance or mental performance.
