I was planning on doing Thunderhill on the 28th but I heard that they cut down the high spots in the surface a couple of weeks ago. When they did so, they made some sort of light rain grove which has supposedly really screwed the track up. I have a buddy who races cars there and he said that turn 14 was sketchy due to the changes (and we're talking about a car). I also heard that there was a trackday there and there were lots of wrecks. Did they really ruin my favorite track or was it just early season jitters causing guys to go down?

They did the same thing at Mid OH last year. I am not sure how bad the grooves are at thunderhill, but Mid Oh wasn't too bad, but it made it unnerving to ride on.
It is worse with tires with Tread that runs the same rotational path as the tire spins (as most do).
But Mid OH just did the shaving and grooving on the convrete patches that are installed for cars.

I would be interested to know how bad it is since I will be there on the 28th as well? Anyone?

I talked to some AMA racers that did a recent track day there. They said that the track surface sucked!!!!! If you only ride 80% then you'll be OK but if you push it you'll have to get used to having 3-4 "moments" per lap. One problem is that there are several patches thoughout the course--different types of asphalt. Another problem is that there are "asphalt snakes" (sealer) along the race lines in the turns. The last problem is that they cut down lumps in several turns and created light rain groves that almost run in the same direction as the race line. All of these create a sensation that the bike is never planted. The bike wants to follow the rain groves, slide on the snakes and changes traction with the different patches laid down. The exit of turn 2 is ugly as well as turn 7, 8 and 14. One of the very experienced racers there went to one of the guys who rented the track after the first session and told him to get his money back.
Well, because of all of this, the 60% chance of rain and the subpoena for court that I got, I won't be attending. I was also told that after a couple of months of cars racing around, the track should come back to being more rideable.
Eric, you wouldn't be coming here with a guy with the last name of Findlay would you?

Baldy do you know Jim Findlay? Or do you know his brother. He lives in your town. Troy341

I know Bob (I am assuming it's his brother). He is my sergeant here in Sacto. He told me that they (Jim and some friends) were possibly coming down for the T-hill trackday on the 28th. I was going to hook up with them.

yup thats about what i had heard from the guys. The rain grooves have to be pretty much crapola. But i also heard that the sealer had not been laid down yet, and that should improve the irregularity some. So hopefully by the end of next month all will be normal again because I have two days coming.
We shall see.
Tell Bob that the Lebanese plumber isn't coming down. The 60% chance of rain scared them off. They may be down in a couple of weeks. Sorry that you are gonna miss them. Jim is a quality guy. Troy341
Just kidding, he's a dick. Troy341
