Apart from the failring?

The R engine has different power characteristics - more top end (~135hp compared to ~125 on the S) but less low- and mid-range. For street riding, I'd actually choose the S because lo- and mid-range is more useful.

Mmm ... how much of a difference? Do you have any links to a R vs S comparison or review please?

they are two different bikes with a similar motor, the TLR is a race bike where as the TLS is a street bike. different frames, forks, swingarms, The TLS motor is a detuned version of teh TLR, they also have different riding caracteristics.... other than the fact that they are both V-twins made by Suzuki, they are 2 diff bikes....

Which would be best for a big heavy guy doing street thrashing? I doubt it'll ever get to a race track http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

wow. i have a R and i have two friends that have the S. totally different handling characteristics. power delivery is different too. the S is a smoother power delivery then the R, but they are both really close as far as power goes.

sorry but the TL's don't have 135 ponies, on average they are around 120 or so. if you get 130 from a TL you're doing quite well.

the S is more of a touring style ride and is a little more of an upright ride the the R. when I ride their bikes i feel like i'm up a lot higher. then when I get back on my R i feel like i'm on the ground.

both really nice bikes, both are pretty close in speed and take off. really it's how you prefer your riding position and if you want to be real comfortable (TLS) or just comfortable (TLR)

The 97 model TLS is the one to get. I've ridden them all S's and R's and the 97 TLS Rocks !

It makes the most power of any of the R 's or S 's time and time agian.

If you are real luck you can get the origional ECU (it was recalled and changed) and get it TEKA tuned and it's frigin awesome.

All TL bikes need a earthing kit (wire from neg on battery to each igniton coil and the headstock) and they all need the gear postion sensor modified.

They both love having their air box opened up. Full system is good power improvment. TLR cams in the TLS work very well. They both need a couple of teeth on the back. They both need the slipper clutch welded up.

Most of all they both need the rear shock replaced with a Ohlins/Pensky what ever, conversion

The S is a faster turning , lighter feeling ROAD bike.

Just my opinion.

+1 on the 97 S model. That motor was a beast and a lot more fun then any other S year and easier to ride then a R model.

I never liked the R model as I felt like i was sitting on the windscreen of the bike. After owning a GSXR 1000 the my dad's TL 1000s is just a passing till I get my CBR 973 back.
