: blowing ignition fuses, then stopped running....
mcgsxr 08-20-2001, 10:08 AM Was riding my 91 750 on Saturday, and then it blew the ignition fuse. Replaced, happened again. As I was about 100 miles from home, and only 40 from my destination, I kept replacing the fuses, and riding...
Then the bike stopped running again, the fuse is OK, but the bike will not run.
Hit the starter, and nothing. Ground the starter relay, and the starter will turn, but the bike will not run.
Suggestions?
imported_jeff 08-20-2001, 11:50 AM did you do any mods prior to this happening?
you've got a short in the main ignition wire somewhere.....trace through the wiring from ignition switch back, and be on the lookout for melted insulation and wiring touching the frame or anything metal...
mcgsxr 08-20-2001, 12:28 PM Thanks Jeff, I will have a look, starting at the key, and working back.
I did not do any recent mods, but the valves were just adjusted, so perhaps in all the moving wires around to get the valve cover off, something has now been moved into position to cause problems.
Appreciate the reply.

Oh fucking DOH!!!!

I think I'll just go away now and practise my drooling (not on the keyboard!). Well, dammit, put a fan on it and I can repeat this brilliantly sage advice.
I used to read....used to think...at least I think I did??? images/icons/grin.gif images/icons/grin.gif
Anyway, good luck with your quest. If you need any help with your thermostat or water pump, don't hesitate to ask. I believe they are virtual on your model....right...arrggggh
bcjohn 08-21-2001, 02:21 AM If your rad fan blades hit anything and stick, this will blow your ignition fuse. IE, everytime it warms up enough to click in, your fuse blows and the bike stops. Done repetitively enough its conceivable that you may have lunched the heavier duty fuse that is in the circuit with the starter relay etc.
Check it out, good luck.

I suspect you might be right about the further electrical damage - I have provided the shop with spare signal generator, CDI, coils, alternator, and wiring diagram...
Hopefully they can track down the offending short, and I can ride again.
Thanks again for your idea. images/icons/grin.gif
