Can anyone tell me step by step on how to install a new front sprocket? This may be elementary to some, however I have never done it and want to make sure I do it right. I like doing things myself and learning from it. That way I know what kinda job I am getting. I am going 1 tooth down (if it matters)...God Bless....Jamie http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

remove the 4 bolts holding on the sprocket cover, remove the chain from the sprocket, put a towel wrapped bar in between the top of the swingarm and one of the spokes of the rear wheel so it cannot turn, get a breaker bar with a 32mm socket, and crank away. putting it back on is just the reverse, and it needs to be torqued to 83.2#'s. good luck!

what he said. it depends if you can't get it off or not. some use an impact gun. I've gotten mine off easily with just a regular socket wrench. But you will need to get a socket to fit the nut. If your switching to a 520, whats funny is on mine i shouldn't of put the spacer back in. I almost ate it too. So make sure if you need or don't need the spacer. call who ever you got the chains/sprockets from.

Thanx for the "heads up". I will call to find out. By the way, did you change the rear as well, or just the front? If just the front, why?

i didn't care at the time. for even wear always change all 3 items at the same time. But i spend $15 bucks on a front sprocket and just put on my 600 to see what it was like. You can easily change it with out a lot of work, and of coarse it fits on the stock chain. At about 8000 miles I went for the whole 520 conversion and changed everything and added 2 more on the rear. You should change everything together. But also some change the front only because IMO its a lot simplier than changing the rear sprocket.

Really, I read another post in the 1000 forum that said that I would stamd more to gain by going up 3 in the rear. Also said I could use the smae chain without problems. Is this also true? All in all...what is best for the bike...I can't get the whole conversion right now, so thi is what I am working with. Thanx for the replies and help in this....God Bless...Jamie

what conversion can't u get right?

the final drive? just divide the rear by the front.

No you can't put a +2 or +3 on a stock chain. It might fit with +2 but it will be really tight.

what your saying about +3 is true. -1 is more of a torque change than +2 but its less than +3. I'm not sure but -1 is pretty close to +2.6 or something.

The hell with you dude, I have had conflicting info on this subject since the beginning. Yes, mabe I am not the "Grand Wizard" of motorcycle dynamics, so I chose to set up a post to find out through other people's experience what actually worked better and what didn't. I appreciate your "need" to answer, however if my questions seem elementary to you, scroll on past. Thanx....Jamie

gimpsta, the conversion I was speaking of that I couldn't get right NOW, is the entire 3 (front, rear sprockets, and a chain), not that I cannot "get it". Sorry for your misunderstanding....I thought you were saying..."hey you idiot, what can't you figure out". I apoligize for the earlier post and appreciate your continuied help with helping me understand what is best and what has worked for you. Sorry man, Jamie

wow thats cool.

No i wasn't trying degrade you or anything. This topic confused the heck out of me forever. This is a forum, and since what I say in person comes across rude sounding, it even is magnified when i type it http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Since I'm bored out of my mind right now, and I'm getting paid to do it, all I do is ride when its nice, change diapers, run, and post millions of posts to make time go by. So sorry if I came across harsh. If you have any questions, i'll help to the best of my ability but there are TONS of people I learned everything from on this sight, who are also willing to help out. I've learned more from this sight then from the two states i've lived in and the people I've ridden with over these past 2.5 years.

good luck with it though http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

i'm going with the whole conversion, but i just realized that if i buy the chain at one place and then get the sprockets from a diferent place i got confused

if i want to go down 1 in the front and stay
stock on the rear with a 2k1 750, i've heard a lot of people say that i wont notice the improvement much - anyone have any experience with this? also, if i do go down one front, i would go from 17-42 to 16-42, would this mean that i need a 520 chain? the website i want to get the sprockets from sell front and rear 520 sprockets, but the front is 16 and the rear is 38... is that right?or would i want a 42 rear and a 16 front? sorry but i really want to understand this before i drop the $$ and then get messed up cause my chains dont fit

If you change the front one out, you don't need to change the chain. You can roll the stock one. However if you were to change the rear, then you'd need to swap the chain b/c of the length and tension on it. I couldn't tell a WHOLE lot of difference, however there is some...higer RPM's and a little more torque on the low end. For the RPM's I already had a TRE on borad so with a flip of the switch...its fixed to some degree. Hope this helps...J

i ordered from first sprocketspecialists.com then Todd at calsportbike.com

give todd a call by visiting his website.

first: no you don't have to get a 520 if you drop the front sprocket smaller. if you drop the front you won't need a new chain - but its recommended to always change everything at once. ( i didn't though)

-1 you won't feel a ton, unless your really use to the stock set up. i add +2 with the -1 after a few weeks and REALLY nocticed a difference. Then i put must the -1 back on - and I could do the same wheelies now that I'd learned how. so in short the -1 does make a significant change you just have to figure it out how to work.

PM me if you have any questions about it all, i've had a 600 929 and 750. i geared the other two but i haven't done anything to the 750. so just let me know
