can pull the stock airbox on a 921100 straight out with the carbs removed?

Hope so, for your sake... I managed to get within a quarter-inch or so on my '96 but could not get the fucking thing out without pulling the cylinder head... it *might* have come out if I removed the alternator drive casting but it wasn't enough of a sure thing to make it worth a failed attempt.

You sure can. A couple corners of it may end up a bit knackered, but not it will come out.

Now putting it back in after is another thing. If you plan on putting it back, dont remove it unless you have a high frustration tolerance or are willing to loosen the motor mounts to swing the motor forward.

i have installed and removed many air boxes in 91-92 1100's I removed the generator and it slides out with some moving it around.
