: Doing 520 sprocket/chain coversion... quick questions...
NastyC4 10-24-2004, 06:05 PM Well i was getting ready to do the conversion until i realized that i dont have a socket big enough for the front sprocket nut. luckily i didnt remove the chain first as i did read the archives of the swap and learned i could have someone hold the brake while i loosen the sprocket nut. Couple of questions...
1. is the front nut 32mm ?
2. what is the torque spec for the front and rear sprocket/ nuts.
3. reading some archives i came across some posts about a counter nut or something on the front sprocket... doesnt look like theres more than the 1 big one to me.. i attached a pic too..
Its an 04 750. any input or helpful tips would be appreciated !!

SkizitGSXR 10-25-2004, 03:35 AM An 04..THAT is why it's so clean...
1. On 02 and 03 models it is 20mm, dunno about yours. Probably the same.
2. Something like 83 ft'lbs on the front sprocket bolt...I dunno about the fove or six bolts on the rear sprocket...but the axle bolt is 93 ft-lbs.
3. Just the one nut. Can't remember if it is reverse threaded or not...? Yeah, you'll need someone to hold the brake for you, to make it easier. OR..use a wood 2x2 through the spokes and on top of the swingarm..that'll work, too. Just put a towel or something between the wood and the spoke to prevent scarring.
Just curious...that sprocket is in A+ shape..why are you changing it already?

NastyC4 10-25-2004, 03:40 AM thanx for the reply. the socket i got to fit ( just bought it 5 mins ago) is a 1 1/4. its clean cuz i wiped everything with wd-40 ! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif i even wipe off all the chain lube off the outside links cuz i think its messy. changing it cuz i got a erv2 DID 520 conversion... i just wanted a gold chain... and nice titanium sprockets. save me some weight too! I stayed with stock gearing.. was going to go up one in the front but decided 175 mph is enough.
is it a reverse thread sprocket?? im gonan go do it in 10 mins... dont wanna be cranking it too tight!
SkizitGSXR 10-25-2004, 03:44 AM Considering rotation of that sprocket is counter-clockwise, it would make sense for it to be counter-threaded, but maybe not. I honestly can't remember.
Going one up is not a good idea anyways, as far as the speedometer goes. You'd actually be going FASTER than your speedo says. Transversely, if you went one down in the front, you would be going slower than the speedo says.
Stock gearing is still 17/42 on the '04s right?

NastyC4 10-25-2004, 04:02 AM Its 17/43 stock. if stock was 17/42 on the 03s, im guessing we got one up on the rear since the 04s rev slightly higher. I figured if i went one up in the front... or say 2 down in the rear... it would make my speedo more accurate at higher speeds. considering i spent alot of my night riding at over 150 mph i figured it wud be nice to be going as fast as the speedo says. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
GSXRSE7EN 10-25-2004, 09:28 AM It is an 1 1/4 socket? I thought these were all metric.
Mine used a 32mm socket.
Be careful not to strip the nut. I bet that won't be an easy fix.
Proper_Villain 10-27-2004, 07:15 AM You can get a Yellowbox to fix any errors in your speedo. I have one laying around that I never used on my '03 that I'll sell.
Let me know,
Anthony D 10-30-2004, 03:04 PM nastyc4, you are gearing your bike taller? i understand you ride at 150mph for must of the time, but even with a -1,+2 combo (a great street combo) you can still go that fast and you will have much better acceleration down low. in order to fix the speedo error, just get a yellowbox or a speedohealer.
NastyC4 10-30-2004, 09:05 PM well i am not a firm believer in shorter gearing helping overall acceleration. shorter gearing allows for a prime rpm range to be attained when exiting turns say on a ramp... but for outright highway acceleration... a nice mid sized gear does the job best depends on the motor always... too many variables to find optimum gear ratios.). reason being is because the motor will stay at its peak hp range longer... giving faster acceleration. we used to do highway runs even with dodge vipers. stock with a 3.07 gear they would out accelerate a 3.73 geared car on the highways. the more shifts the higher gear car had to do upset the momentum and it would pull its hardest for a shorter period. i realized this first in my corvette when i switched gears toa 4.09. it FELT faaster.... but wasnt when racing my brothers camaro ss at highway speeds. Timed runs confirmed this. when building my motor to rev 8000 rpm i kept the higher gears but thats cuz i had more than 2500 rpms to play with.
anyhow, i stayed stock gearing. i figure after the full system, filter and a tune she should pull to redline in 6th. enough for me http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif without wanting to lift the front wheel off the ground. especially usefull when running away from certain people with white cars late at night http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I'd highly recommend the Speedo Healer. Cheaper and comes with "no splice" factory plugs. Check out Todd and CalSportbike and tell him I said to give U a good deal. (I'm ErionCBR on the Honda forum)
