: Sacramento questions
ckfrdrice 07-10-2004, 03:53 PM I've come to the realization that I hate the backwoods "city" that I've lived in for the past 5 years and I need a change. I've got an uncle that lives in Sacremento for one of the drug distributors there. I would very much like to move out to CA, but I'm not familiar with the area at all. Anyone here give me a general description of the place? How is the riding out there? Is the real estate market just as "inflated" as the rest of CA? How about the job market? Right now I am an information security officer for a state agency, but I am hoping to get my business continuity certification in the next 6 months. Any info on the place would be great. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

i like nothern california..
Chacon 07-11-2004, 04:54 PM The area of sac is flat but less then 30 min away are the foothills and the Sierra Nevada. Two hours away is Highway 1 which follows the coast and is gorgeous. I think it’s a great place to ride there’s a lot of local roads that are great. Check out this web page http://www.pashnit.com/motoroads.htm We also have three race tracks around here Thunder Hill Park Sears Point and Laguna Seca. Also every Thursday night all guys who ride bikes meet at Jamba Juice sometimes there’s over 200 bikes. On Friday and Saturday there a lot of bikers who cruise Sunrise Blvd. The job market is pretty hot I mean it’s the capital but I think they do have freeze on hiring state employees cause there having budget crisis or some bullshit. The real estate is inflated but not as much as the rest of California but its getting up there so I would move now if I were to move.
The Sacramento real-estate market is inflated but not so much as the coastal areas of CA and definately not like Lake Tahoe. Sacramento has seasons but they're mild enough that you can ride year-around. Traffic in the city is bad relative to most of the country but good by LA standards. Lots of great riding in northern california but you'll have to deal with the usual heavy RV traffic in the summer months. It's only a few hours to Nevada where you can find roads that are deserted enough for the occasional 150mph run though.
turbodogs02 07-16-2004, 06:31 PM Having just bought my first house in December, I would for sure say the market is somewhat inflated, but that's just the times. Overall housing availability is good, with a wide selection of areas to choose from.
Good, and I mean real good, twisties can be had approx. 30 minutes from town, in just about any direction. Check out the pashnit.com site and also check out www.madmaps.com. (http://www.madmaps.com.) These are great maps to have in your trunk or tankbag, or just planning a quick little blast through the hills. Like previously mentioned, Thunder Hill is about 1 1/2 hours to the north up I-5 and Sears Point is about an hour to the west. The weather is usually good for riding just about year round, with highs going into the 100's in the summer, but the nights usually cool off pretty good, and you'll see a lot of bikes around town about 6,7,8 o'clock. Today I think we were in the mid 90's. Right now, I've got the windows in the house open with a nice breeze coming through.
Can't help ya with job info, maybe try some web sites like monster or yahoo and see what kind of responses you get.
Overall, I'd say it's a good place to live. I've pretty much grown up in the area, and been here all my life, save for 3 years spent in Vegas way back when. It's growing quick, so there are some great new shopping/eating establishments popping up all the time. The downtown/midtown scene is pretty groovy too with a lot of cool hangouts for drinking, eating, and just relaxing. There are some really great places that are all very unique and different from the run of the mill, cookie cutter Chevy's, Applebee's type of places. The Streets of London pub, Hamburger Mary's, Ink, The Waterboy, The Esquire Grill, True Love Coffeehouse. There's also some great clubs from what I've heard ( I don't go to them). Also there's lots of art exhibits, tons of local wineries ( the wine is sooo good, and the people so friendly I don't even go to Napa anymore!), more golf courses than you can shake a stick at (pun intended), rivers, Folsom Lake, and general close proximity to just about anything. Like they say, Sacramento is about 2 hours from everywhere. Lake Tahoe, San Francisco, Santa Cruz, Bodega Bay, Reno, tons of hiking and camping.
Hope that helps some. Good luck in your decision! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
Blitzergixxer 07-20-2004, 05:42 PM I live in Placerville, about 30 minutes east up Hwy 50 from Sac. There are lots of canyon roads out here where I live, Hwy 49, Salmon Falls Rd., Hwy 193 just to name a few. As many of the others have said as well, Reno is about a two hour ride away and so is San Fransisco. Lake Tahoe, the same. Coloma, where gold was first discovered, is right on Hwy 49 which is one of my favs to ride on.
As far and group meetings, Jamba Juice is at Lohmans Plaza which is off Fair Oaks Blvd. and I have seen as many as 200+ bikes there. The Sacnuts(stunt team), DTP Crew(stunt and cayon riders), as well as the norm crowd will show up and its a great way to meet the riders in the area. The locals are always more than happy to have someone new ride with them and they will take you on the places where you can go and really enjoy things. Another place of meeting is on the corner of Howe Ave. and Arden Way. Not as big but another good place.
Sunrise Ave. was the cruising strip last year in 03 but the local Police Dept and CHP have posted signs prohibiting cruising of any kind and there is a zero tolerance policy with it. Too many young kids with imports and muscle cars and sportbikes, racing up and down the streets. They do there best to crack down on a car or bike that they see pass more than twice and it works. Place is still fun to ride at but be aware that you are most likely being watched.
Real Estate is inflated but not as bad as the Bay Area, Southern Cal, or Tahoe. Homes can range from 175,000 up to the million dollar range. Average price for a home falls into the 350,000 to 400,000 dollar range for a decent sized 3 bed room home. Just depends on where you look to buy. The posh neighborhoods are El Dorado Hills, Granite Bay, areas of Roseville and Folsom, and parts of Rocklin. A place to look for a home is up in Placerville where I live or up in Auburn. Both are in the foothills and both are about 30 minutes away from Sacramento. You can get a 3 bedroom home on some land up here for in the 400,000 dollar range. My folks just sold their 3 bedroom on 3.25 acres for 410,000.
There are lots of places where you can apply for security jobs, one of the best in at Folsom Dam. My buddy works as a guard there and gets paid I believe around 50 grand a year. There are serveral more places as well that will pay decently. Just have to look.
All in all, I love it here and I plan to come back to the area after my time in the Marine Corps is up and will be coming back up here every weekend. Come out here for a visit sometime. I think you'd enjoy it. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
JonRags 07-21-2004, 05:30 AM The housing is inflated. My father in law just put his house up for sale about 40 miles out of Sac. It's a house that was built poorly in the 60s and sits on a little more than an acre. The selling price is 397.But like Blitzer said, Hwy 49 (the American River Canyon), Salmon Falls Rd are awesome. There are some areas up near Foresthill that are great as well as taking Hwy 49 out towards the Grass Valley area.

sleepy 08-11-2004, 04:25 PM No doubt... I just moved here about two months ago and have already ventured to two tracks that are near by.
The other day i woke up and decided to go for a ride. An hour later or so later i found myself and the lady in Lake Tahoe, went wine tasting, gambled some, and then stayed the night.
All on a whim..... Pretty damn cool. Well, its actually hot here. But, you get the idea....
