My 97 600 has done about 5000 miles, but my gearbox is becoming troublesome. The last few rides out 1st-->2nd ends up in neutral a lot of the time (usually with a big clunk) and occasionally 2nd-->1st ends up the same. It improved after an oil change, but it still isn't 100% right. All other gears engage OK, but there's some nasty clunks now and then.

The clutch isn't dragging at all and I've adjusted the shift lever around. I've tried fast shufts, slow deliberate shifts, clutching, not clutching and it makes no difference. Any ideas on possible causes? Will it last till winter without a strip down?

Did you adjust the clutch throw out rod or just the lever?

Sounds like things inside the tranny might be a little bent.

pull the clutch and inspect the shift drum plate...could be the bolt backing out (it's an issue on current generation gsxr's although it can happen on any bike and cause the same problems). other than that, there's not much else you can do short of splitting the cases to inspect the tranny. could be worn detents on the shift drum, or a bent shift fork....

I agree with Jeff... images/icons/grin.gif Check the bolts on the shift drum...
