: I have some dvd backup questions.
GixxerTib 06-14-2004, 12:44 PM Okay so I have a Lite-On 8X +/- burner...backed up a few of my dvd's, created a few dvd's from mpegs I had and such. Today I tried to back up Along Came Polly...we'll I tried using Dvd X Copy, Dvd Shrink, Nero and Dvd Creator but I cannot Backup the dvd...it always comes up with Copy Protection Error. I though Dvd X Copy was supposed to take care of that right?? will cannot back it up. HELP Someone...tell me what programs you are using please!
you try using dvd decrypter to put the dvd on your hard drive first??? Thats the program I always use and have not had a problem yet. One problem I have had in the past though is I will get an error with one of my dvd drives but if I switch to the other drive and then decrypt it then it works fine http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif
anyway, dvd decrypter is free on the web - just google it and give it a try
mtmra70 06-14-2004, 10:31 PM what version of DVDXCopy do you have? The new version wont decrypt the dvd. The older version is the stuff that works http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'm using version 1.5.2 Do I need a different version??? The other problem I'm having is that 50% of the dvd's I backup can be played on my home dvd player and some can't. My dvd player plays dvd-r media and i'm using memorex media.
2k3thou 06-14-2004, 11:16 PM I also use DVD Decrypter to remove the copyprotection and to rip the DVD on my hard drive, and then I use DVD Shrink to edit/burn the DVD´s. This combination never failed me once (unlike DVD X Copy), plus the picture quality is also better.
GixxerTib 06-15-2004, 12:59 AM Well I found out what my problem might be. I have used Memorex CD-R's only and NEVER have burnt a coaster NEVER. So I figured with the luck that I had with the Memorex CD-R's that i'd go ahead and purchase Memorex DVD-R's and they should work good. WRONG! I downloaded DVD Indentifier and ran it on the disk and looked up the media code on www.videohelp.com (http://www.videohelp.com) well that site says that the particular batch of DVD-R's I got is pretty much trash! Everyone is complaining about them and they aren't too reliable with dvd players but will play fine in computers...that's the exact problem i'm having so I guess it's off to the store to buy some RiTek's...supposedly they are really good! We'll see.
mtmra70 06-15-2004, 01:28 AM yea, the memorex dvd-rs I have are junk. the dvd+r however by them is awesome. burned well over 300 of them without issues.
GixxerTib 06-15-2004, 01:34 AM Well luckily out of the 25Pk I only have 9 discs left and Newegg.com is replacing the pack for free so i'll leave it sealed and sell it on ebay or something and buy another brand.
What brand are you using for dvd-r's and are your dvd+r's able to play on your home dvd player or just on the computer...I haven't tried a dvd+r in my home player yet so I don't know if they will play in mine. Thanks for the help.
Just give me some advice on the media brands http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif for dvd-r and dvd+r's...thanks.
mtmra70 06-15-2004, 03:19 AM Memorex +Rs play fine in my home players, but certain laptops will and will not read them although my desktops read them fine. -R seems to work in more dvd drives in PCs, and they work in my home players, but +R is the preferred method.
GixxerTib 06-15-2004, 03:22 AM cool thanks for the tip...i'm new to the whole dvd backup thing.
mtmra70 06-15-2004, 04:01 AM Verbatim and Rietek are also good brands
I have to agree with mtmra70, Ritek make some good dvdr's, do a search on Newegg for Ritek / Ridata for more info. Ridata is one of the names that Ritek media is sold under.
GixxerTib 06-15-2004, 09:25 PM Thanks to the help of you guys and some of the website you pointed me to I think I got everything working now. I bought some Memorex DVD+R's like mtmra70 said since he has good experiences with them...well after 5 burns no coaster...everyone plays in my home player, laptop and pc. I'm going to keep my eye's open for sales on the other disc's too.
I am using DVD Decrypter put the dvd on the hd and then use DVDShrink to burn it to disk if it's a small enough dvd...I did use DVD X Copy to do one dvd since it is too large to be put onto one disk and that worked fine.
So overall I think it was a call of bad media http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/piss.gif but that doesn't matter since newegg is replacing the 25pk because of it.
Thanks for the help guys.
Meanwhile looking on some of those pages that linked off of others I found out that you can overclock my burner to make it work as a Dual Layer Burner...i'll try that whenever the DL disks are cheap. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
mtmra70 06-15-2004, 10:10 PM What burner do you have?
BTW, Best Buy has sales on the memorex all the time. Last week I got a 50pk for $42.39 OTD. Keep an eye out at bensbargains.net also cause they post amazon deals. Best Buy also has sales on Verbatims and Fujifilm also.
GixxerTib 06-16-2004, 01:44 AM I have a Lite-On SOHW-812S it's a single layer +/- R/RW supporting 8X. From one of the sites if you take a Lite On 832S Firmware and patch it to your 812S your able to burn daul layer dvd's. There are several DVD Burners that are "currently" single layer burners that have patches to make them dual layers. Check this page to see if yours is one of them. http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?t=25780&highlight=dual+layer+list
mtmra70 06-16-2004, 02:27 AM None for me, I have the Sony.
