: GSXR-Freak Helped me fix my bike!
Ratman69 04-22-2002, 10:23 AM I just wanted to publicly thank GSXR-Freak for the assistance with my bike this weekend.
We (and when I say we I mean he worked and I watched! images/icons/smile.gif ) did a valve check and adjustment, installed a manual cam chain tensioner from APE, did a throttle body sync, and removed the PAIR system and the charcoal canister. He showed me how to do all this so I can do it next time. I think I got it all. I lost him on how exactly to check the cam timing, but I'll get the service manual and figure that out.
Only one of the valves needed adjustment, so we replaced the shim on that. After we installed the CCT and got the bike back together, though, the cam chain was still clicking, so we ordered a new cam chain and he is going to put it in for me when it gets here. So I just left my bike at his place, and I'l pick it up whenever he's done.
He did a really good job, he was really nice, and I'm glad to have met him. Thanks for the help John! graemlins/thumbup.gif

jp233 04-22-2002, 12:27 PM ok thats it I am moving to Cali
John do you need a room/housemate? images/icons/grin.gif
I'd love to tear into my motor, bump it up to like 817cc or whatever, and dump some cams in her, port&polish, etc etc
Freak you are my hero graemlins/bounce.gif
fRaGgLe 04-22-2002, 12:55 PM hmm - Whats the hourly rate on this stuff ?
I need to find a new mechanic that can do this - the cost of shop labor is killing me images/icons/smile.gif
reidisaki 04-22-2002, 06:01 PM Yup john is the man...
I haven't met him yet but he always gives me tips on stuff... mechanically and my riding skills..
I would like to meet him one day and I would lvoe for him to work on my bike.. SHOPS RIP YOU OFF! I HATE THEM ALL.. At least the ones in my area.. they wanted to charge me 130 for a front 207 ZR dunlop and then another 40 for putting it on.. thats 170 for mounting a FRONT TIRE!
Anyways.. John... I am starting to hear a clicking noise i think too.... it only happened one day and I dont hear it now.. How will I know when to replace the CCT? I have a 98 Gix 6 and its got 10.7k miles on it... Are you ever moving to the bay area up here?? That would be awesome, you should open up a shop! you'd make so much money and I would advertise your legendary skills. I would really like to learn how to fix it myself but no one here really knows how to do it nor will they teach me!
Thanks agian FREAK

GSXR-Freak 04-22-2002, 11:56 PM REID,
I would say start getting the cash for a MCCT... it sounds like it might be time.. Are you sure that it isnt an EX leak? I was working with Ratman and it turns out that one tube on the Pair valve had a nice long split in it... Hence the ticking sound his bike was making... Fixed now... images/icons/smile.gif
Think about it... I have seen a few cam chains go bar really fast, and if you bike did a ticking sounds one day and stopped, it is a good point at the cct...
John
Ratman69 04-23-2002, 01:37 AM Like I was saying, this guy is the shit! He not only did the cam chain tensioner and valve adj, but he showed me what emmissions crap I could remove, and found my exhaust leak. I kept thinking it was the headers, cause I really didn't know anything about the PAIR system. Had I looked closer rather than being set in my thinking, I would have noticed the large split in that tube. We fixed it by removing the whole PAIR system!
So I guess I didn't really need to buy that full exhaust system to cure the exhaust leak. images/icons/smile.gif Oh well, might as well keep it now that I've bought it!
reidisaki 04-23-2002, 01:53 AM yeah I'm not sure what it was but i'm brining it in to sfmoto.com in a month for a 12k service. I'll ask them to check the steeringhead bearings (sinc ei think they are loose) and the ticking noise.. HOpefully they won't screw me over since I am not too familiar with bikes... Ijust dont want to get all this stuff and have to pay for it if i dont need it.. i would pay more for just plain honesty...
Thanks John, I 'll bring up the EX leak idea to them too. but you know how mechanics are sometimes.. they might think I am insulting their intelligence...

WikedGixxer 04-23-2002, 02:09 AM GSXR-Freak is AWESOME images/icons/smile.gif !!! You guys just don't know. First, he practicly helps everyone on this forum...and knows what he's talkin about images/icons/grin.gif . Second, after diagnosing my bike (ON THE FORUM) he installed my MCCT while teachin me how. Not only did I learn a lot...but I had a great time just chillin with him graemlins/thumbup.gif . Last but certainly not least, he came to my place to work on my bike (cuz I couldn't get a truck). ALSO, we're doin my cam chain this week. Hey John...THANKS FOR EVERYTHING...YOU'RE THE MAN graemlins/bounce.gif !!!
GSXR-Freak 04-23-2002, 02:09 AM I dont have an hourly rate... And I would rather not post my prices out in open.. I charge by the job but as anyone on here will tell you, there is no shop that can come close to my prices.
Remember, I dont this so much for the cash as I do becuase i dont like seeing people get ripped off by a shop... I know how to do it so I am willing to pass this on. The only reason that I started to charge is becuase I have so many people wanting me to work on the bikes, that I loose a lot of ride time... Thus I have to make up for my time somehow... and at this time it comes in the cost of cash... images/icons/grin.gif mainly, all the money I make goes right back into my bike... images/icons/grin.gif
If you need something done PM and I will give you a price.
John
GSXR-Freak 04-23-2002, 02:13 AM I am starting to think that it is a good idea for people to replace the cam chains at about 15-20k miles... This is 3 bikes that have had the same problem all in about the same miles... images/icons/frown.gif Kinda sucks, but i am glad I know what they sound like now.. images/icons/grin.gif

John<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">well it look as if i'm gonna have to do this also... i thought it was bad gas that was causing the clicking sound in my 97 gsxr600... well it's still doing it after several tanks of different brands of premium gas...
will an exhaust leak also cause the ticking? because i just tightened my header bolts (they were loose) and the clicking didn't seem to go away...
fyi: i have 16.5k miles and i had the valves adjusted 2-3k miles ago...
should i do the MCCT and remove the PAIR? how much is an MCCT?
Ratman69 04-23-2002, 09:41 AM world101,
When does the bike click? Is it really loud? Exhaust leaks will usually be somewhat loud, popping sounds, that will get faster as you increase engine speed. Once the engine is revving higher, though, you might not hear it over the normal exhaust sound.
The cam chain tensioner will cause a loud clicking from the right side of the engine, that follows the engine speed, but when you decelerate, it slows down at a sloppier rate than the engine.
The cam chain problem seems like it can be best heard at around 6K rpms.

and my exhaust does pop a little when i decelerate, so i figured that i would just remove the PAIR.
i'm gonna call around and try to get a MCCT. i will most definitely need some help when i start the install, so thanks in advance!
Sergio 04-23-2002, 06:29 PM Yeah John is anawesome guy...helped me install my MCCT and various other maintenance things. Just wanted to say thanks again John!
By the way, I'm almost done getting my private pilot's license and semester just ended so Im gonna be hitting you up to go riding real soon!
SERGIO
GSXR-Freak 04-23-2002, 10:10 PM World101, I would think it is your CCT... but watch your chain... It seems to be a problem when the CCT goes out.. images/icons/frown.gif
Sergio, it is no problem... Im glad everything is working. But I dont know if I will be doing any ridding for sometime...
I was at the track today, and the motor sucked a intake valve. So at this time, i need a lot of cash to get it running again.. i have not even taken the motor out yet.. but I know there is lots of damage...
John
Ratman69 04-23-2002, 10:17 PM Shit, that sucks!! What happened? How do you know it sucked an intake valve? What causes that?
I'll throw in a little extra for the help you gave me, I can't do much, but every little bit helps.
GSXR-Freak 04-24-2002, 11:32 AM Thanks for the extra help... Everything does help..
I am going to pick up your chain on the way home tonight... So I should have the bike done tomarrow night... (if everything goes good)
I know it sucked a valve because I pulled the air box off, then the TBs (I was going to check the cam chian since it made a sound like a chain breaking, but my drive chain was still on the bike). When I pulled off the TBs I saw a bunch of metel in the #1 intake boot... I looked in the intake port and I could see the piston and the valve sitting in the cyl... My bikes day was done.
The sounds it made is really hard to explain... I think what happend is a valve spring broke... but I am not sure yet. I wll not know till next week.. maybe longer. I have a lot of bikes to work on, and I need to get them done so people are happy. It isnt like I have the money right now to buy parts, so i am not in a big hurry to take it apart. I will keep everyone on here up to date what is going on with it.
John
Ratman69 04-24-2002, 11:56 AM I hope you didn't ride to the track again. Did you take a trailer? How far into the day was it when it happened?
I would say you should make everyone wait on their bikes, remember you are helping us out, but I guess you are going to need the money from everyone too.
As for my bike, what day do you want me to pick it up? Should I come down tommorrow, or wait for friday or saturday?
Good Luck!
GSXR-Freak 04-24-2002, 12:04 PM Well I am going to do my best to have your bike done tonight or tomarrow night.. There is one other bike that I have a chain for that needs it installed as well... So I have to talk to him and see if we can get his bike to my house... It really makes the job faster with the impact gun... Takeing the start clutch off without it is a bear....
I will let you know tonight if I will have it done Tomarrow or Friday...
John
GSXR-Freak 04-24-2002, 12:06 PM Oh BTW, I used a trailer to get the bike there... But I almost wish it would have happed on friday. That way i would have not spent 450 bucks on the parts I need to get into the track again. I could have put that into the motor.. lol Oh well...
It is one of those things you hear people talking about, and just wish it never happens to you... images/icons/frown.gif Put if it can happen, it does to me... images/icons/frown.gif
John
