YES, THE BIKE RUNS SWEET UNTIL ABOUT 4200, AND GETS PROGRESSIVELY WORSE UNTIL ABOUT 4900.THEN IT CLEANS RIGHT UP. EVERYWHERE ELSE IS GOOD.

My 97 600 has always been flat there. It sounds like it is skiping when I hold it at abot 5000 rpm. I usually don't ride in that range so i don't notice it much but if I hit that range the bike will actually buck and surge until I pull out of that range. I have heard that you can tune that out but it never has bothered me that much. It has been like that since new. I have 24,000 miles so far.

ya, i can ride it to bypass that range, but the fact remains, something aint right.if i dont clean it up, i'm going to have to practically give it away and i dont want to lose that bad....

you have a vaccum line to your airbox? I think you bike may just be out of tune. My other bike does this with an aftermarket exhaust, but put the stock exhaust back on and it's smooth all through out the rpm range. Did you get a jet kit? Who tuned it afterward? I'm terrible at tuning carbs but maybe some folks here can help you out.

Yes please expand on the vacum tube going to your air box. You should not have one... Unless you are talking about the one under the box that hooks up to the flapper valve... If that is the case it shouldnt make a difference.

the vacuum line to the airbox has a one way valve I think , I would check this out fist .
is the bike running OK throughout the rest of the rev range ???

yes the flapper line is the one i'm referring to. the flapper is all cut out of the airbox. but i was under the impression that that line controlled the flapper valve. and even if the box was complete shouldnt that line be pulling vaccuum? i bought this machine used and it would'nt run until i put plugs, a battery and new gas in it.I got it at an auction. So i have no history of what was done internally.
