Dynoed the new bike today. I went in Saturday and made the deal, signed the papers Monday. I got to assist on the prep of the bike and was the first to bring it to life. Put it through 3 heat cycles and took it to my dyno tuner.

Walter at ECS Dyno here in the Phoenix area (Mesa) got to do the break-in. The bike was dropped of Tuesday morning with 0.0 miles on it. Walt was buisy installing a NO2 system on a Busa and wasn't able to get to it till today. I've never seen a bike with NO2 do a run. Rather interesting.

Anyway, I stuck around and we finally got the bike on the dyno. Walt has run hundreds if not a couple thousand bikes and I felt he is the most qualified person I know to break in a bike.

He did several roll-ons varying in gear selection and max rpms gradually building higher and higher. He put about 20 miles on it doing this.

Alright, time for the runs. First run was 122.2. Second was in the 123's and the third was in the low 124's. After several more runs we were in the low 125's. He then did an all gear run with a peak at 125.8hp.

We let it cool down a bit and did a few more 4th gear runs. Consistant low 125's. The last all gear run did produce a peak of 127.2hp. Max torque was right at 57ft/lbs.

Mind you this is a bone stock 04 with no miles before today. I haven't even ridden the bike yet, hell, I haven't even told the old lady about it. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/nono.gif We'll change the oil and put in GN4 with a filter change and ride it to 500 miles then go to synthetic and some more dyno runs. Hopefully I can track down a full TiForce pipe, a PC, BMC filter, and some cams in the near future. We are shooting for high 140's and maybe even into the 150's.

The bike only has 43 miles on it now. Hopefully it will loosen up a bit over the next 500.

Educate yourself by reading the entire article. http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

Do you honestly believe that your bike left the factory in Japan never having been started? From what I hear, they pin the throttle for a give amount of time then shut them off. Much rather have one blow up there than in a customers lap.

At the Mitsubishi plant near my home they run the piss out of the cars at the plant's road test course to make sure nothing breaks. My dad did that job for awhile and he use to tell me stories about 180's at 100mph using the e-brake.

I know Philbie personally... and have had the pleasure of having my bike tuned by ECS Dyno. Walter knows his shit. I'm sure that breaking in on the dyno works just fine. I don't think any of us can actually say that we have enough experience breaking in engines to tell if break-ins done on the dyno are better/worse than break-ins done on the street. About the only people with this kind of experience are the people who routinely tune & dyno bikes. So even though I was skeptical of the mototune guy, I'd buy whatever Walter was selling.

That being said, Philbie is in fact a pathological liar, with delusions of granduer, making most of his assertions highly suspect. I personally don't think he even has a '04, and if he does, it's stolen.

I was skeptical at first, that I'll admitt. But if you really break it down and watch an learn from experienced tuners it's really quite interesting.

Think about what is going on. You're loading and unloading the motor in a controlled environment. Working it up in the rpm range every few cycles. You don't just start it up and rap the motor out. It's really hard to do that on the street with cars, stop lights, and cops. If something does go wrong you're not going to be flipped off like a booger and run over by a car.

Every person that I've talked to that builds motors agrees to do a hard break-in.

Most people can't fight off the urge to ride their new toy immediately. I've had mine now almost a week and it still hasn't seen my garage.

Time will tell after the next 500 miles when I rerun it and see how it doing against other bikes from the same shop.

TwiggyD, you cracked me up with the "http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/bash.gif" . http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

honda's have no recommended break in on new cars and bikes

doesn't hurt a thing to run it like that

I must say that I was pleased with the first ride on it even though it had 43 miles on the odometer. Power was good for stock gearing. The bike is light and more narrow than my 01 racebike.

I think the steering damper is junk however. I got into it once rather hard while entering the freeway. Decent roll-on in first, front wheel in the air about 1ft and a headshake all the way through 3rd gear. Thank God I learned to ride on a 93 CBR900RR.

Changed the oil and filter last night with a fair amount of crap on the magnetic drain plug. I'll continue to vary the rpm's and do lots of roll-ons when I do ride it for the next several hundred miles. Change the oil to synthetic and re-dyno it. Personally I think the motor is mostly broke in, I just want to continue to load the motor for a bit longer.

I'm glad Jody and Greg decided to be nice to me for once. And oh yeah, http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/flipa.gif. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Jody, have a good time at Buttonwillow. I would go but I'll be on my way to the midwest to visit the folks and do some of that racing shit.

I see you have high hopes.. I assure you that with the mods your talking about adding your not going to be able to gain 20+hp without adding CCs or changing the compression!! But good luck getting there!

Nope, they just rebuild it in a couple days, or if its too beat up they switch to brand new motors, and probably complete machines after they rip that one a new asshole on the track. All it does is crank the extra HP for race time, which is why pro teams break in hard. If you want fast HP break it in hard, you want longevity break it in by the book. Hence why they have sponsorship from the manufacturer, so they can get new engines and parts for rebuild every two seconds. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/idea.gif
