Hey all, brand new motorcycle rider here. Went ahead and bought my gsxr while it is still cold because I could get a better deal in the winter. Now I am looking for gear. I bought a shoei RF 1000 helmet for $125 from a friend, now I need a jacket, gloves, and eventually boots.
My hope is to get an aplinestar indy jacket but I am not sure that i can afford it. I wanted to know if there are some cheaper alternatives that would still protect me but also keep me moderately cool while riding.

as far as gloves and boots go I am open to any suggestions so long as they arent ridiculously expensive.

I realize that my epidermal layer is worth the money, but coming up with $800 for good gear in a shortish time span is easier said than done for me.

Go to SportbikeTrackgear.com ( they have video reviews on almost everything ) & or Motomummy.com and search . Personally I like Teknic gear . I have my Jacket ,gloves and boots from them . And another thing .I would never wear / buy someone elses used helmet . That's just gross.

It's winter. You have plenty of time. You somehow managed to afford the bike, so manage to afford good gear.

Figure a good $200-300 jacket, $200-300 boots, $100-250 gloves and get a newer helmet if that RF1000 is more than 3 years old or appears to have been dropped or damaged in any way.

I only buy from STG as mentioned above.

Well i see that's handled for me, thanks K3 and coop.

The Indy is a great jacket, it's what i personally wear all summer long. It's worth the money, as are a RESPECTABLE set of boots and gloves. I know how money can get tight, hell I sure wouldn't want to purchase all my gear again, but now that I have it it's worth every penny. Good gear not only protects you but it holds up well too. Spend $80 on gloves and they'll look like crap at the end of the season if not earlier. Spend $150 on gloves that I approve and you can ride 20,000 miles in them and be protected in the event of an accident.

Thanks for the advice, I afforded the bike by taking $100 bucks out of my paycheck every week for a year. Moneys tight now though because valentines day is coming up, and then my girl's birthday is like 2 weeks after that.

I will just have to be patient with getting gear, im not getting on the bike until I feel well protected.

I am not grossed out by a used helmet. I removed the pads and washed them, then used Lysol twice on the inside and left it sitting with dryer sheets in it for a while. it smells like heaven in there now. It doesn't have a scratch on it, why does it matter if its older than 3 years? Are helmets perishable goods?

Yes, helmets definitely have a shelf life to them. The exact date depends on who you ask. The EPS and the resins inside the helmet are degraded by the sweat and moisture accumulated in the helmet when you ride. big words

Like I said, I know money is tight. I just hate to see people buy shitty Joe Rocket or AGV Sport gear cause that's all they had in their budget and then blow it apart with a 5mph street crash.

STG normally has close outs on different gear. you can get yourself a nice SHIFT racing textile jacket from them for $100 or less. not sure what the going price was on them on your site jason but i recall the are pushing $100 or less. they also had some nice Teknic chicane boots on close out for $99 but you have to have little feet to get them now :lmao

if you rub jason the right way, he could put together and cut you a good package deal on jacket/boots/gloves depending on your budget. he loves to talk about gear on the phone! STG normally has close outs and discounted stuff on sale all year round.

i got an idea; sell your supersport and get a less expensive used sport-touring bike that's more manageable for a new rider. then, you'll have some extra cash left over for some proper gear...

Helmet, jacket, gloves, boots.......... And what about pants??? Don't understand why people want to protect everything but their legs???? A pair of jeans will wear through in less than one second at 50 mph. Please add protective pants to your list.

I use kevlar jeans everytime I ride and dont own leather but once I start racing ill have a suit.
As with everyone, boots, helmet, jacket and at least kevlar pants.

expensive doesn't mean better protection. go to a dealer and try on things that you feel comfortable with. i would strongly recommend jackets with ce approved armor and motorcycle riding pants or jeans. atgatt!

I agree, expensive doesn't mean better. A lot of time when you are paying more for the brand. I can't see myself forking over big money for stuff like dainese, it's freaking ridiculous.

Haha funny that you would say that about dainese I actually just went and bought the dainese nero jacket today and was proud for not skimping. Along with alpinestars smx 2 air carbon gloves and s-mx 5 boots
