: Helmet Help
Newbmitch 01-23-2012, 02:06 PM I currently own an HJC IS-16 helmet and when I got it I was pleased with it. I am thinking about getting a new helmet now because it fell off my passenger peg twice which scratched the shield the first time and broke the mouth vent cover the second time (I know totally my fault).
I do not have an unlimited budget and I feel that i need an integrated internal sun visor because I have extremely sensitive eyes due to diabetes and multiple bouts of Bells Paulsy.
****I want to avoid carrying multiple face shields for night/day riding****
The helmet I want cant be gotten state side and shark told me they have no current plans to get this DOT certified.

My other choice is this scorpion EXO-1100

Does anyone have an opinion on this helmet or any other thoughts/ suggestions for other helmets.
I'm Canadian 01-23-2012, 02:10 PM Have you looked at Bell helmets and get a photochromic shield?
http://stores.sportbiketrackgear.com/Detail.bok?no=7702
I'm Canadian 01-23-2012, 02:12 PM The RS-1 from Bell is about same price as the Scorpion. The shield will be cost a bit extra but well worth it I'm sure.
Newbmitch 01-23-2012, 02:33 PM I'll have to look into that. I know the rs-1 is a great helmet but i didn't know about that shield. does anyone have one yet, maybe a review. wondering how the darkness is compared to other shields. also am i correct in assuming that it changes automatically like the eyeglasses?
K3Gixx 01-23-2012, 02:45 PM Read my review in the gear forum... you can't miss the title. It involves the RS1 and the Transitions shield.
Transitions aside... there are a LOT of helmets out there with internal visors honestly. Some are crap, some are good.
Spend some time watching the review videos done at sportbiketrackgear.com to see what works best for you. Narrow it down to your favorite 2 or 3 and then CALL Jason at STG on the phone, and he can help you further plus get you the best prices.
How much do you ride in the dark? Those with the flip-down inner visor are quite a bit heavier. I had a Schubert a long time ago and hated the weight.
Now I always have a dark visor on my helmets and keep a pair of clear safety glasses in the tail. I keep them in a sock so they don't get scratched but at the same time don't take up as much space as a hard case.
The glasses I use are 3M wrap-around work glasses, $15 at Home Depot but they meet the same safety requirements as visors :)
Newbmitch 01-23-2012, 03:03 PM I ride often at night. in the summer ill go all day.

Of the reviews i've read online that biggest complaint is how dark the shield gets, most ppl say it's not dark enough. I personally don't like a really dark tint, currently use a light smoke shield and it's more than enough.
JetBlast 01-23-2012, 03:34 PM get one of these visor bags you can wear. i recently purchased one because i ride in the day time and get caught at night. its only $8.99 so not a bad price. the inside of the bag is very soft for the visor so no scratching.

I have one of those, never use it. Thing about that is that you have to remember to bring it if you are expecting to stay out after dark - the glasses I mentioned (or the flip-down visors) are with you all the time.
...then again in YOUR case, you might not even have room for glasses :lmao I never used the stock tail on the RC8, just the race tail but there isn't much room if any. Can you even open the tail? :lmao I know the bad excuse for a rear seat they include so you only have to bring your wife for one ride just clips on the outside :lmao
Tater Tot Wee Woo 01-23-2012, 03:52 PM i like dark shields. If i get stuck out at night, i just flip my visor up.

You'll put an eye out, kid... :facepalm
Imagine riding behind a car at, say, 30mph and getting hit by a rock thrown up by it (always seems to hit the throat right above the leathers :twitch).
Now imagine the same - in your eye.
Hence the safety glasses...

After it dries it's rock hard. It's like wearing protective glasses 24/7.

nope, no trunk on mine! as you know, its a race bike from the factory. i will ride with my tints at night. i havent had any major issues with it. normally i dont travel without my bag on my back anyway. ill carry the extra shield in there as needed. in the NW, the sun will be up at 5am and goes down around 10pm in the middle summer. in the winter, the sun comes up at 8am and sets before 5pm.

That's illegal in NY and probably in a lot of other states . You have to be wearing glasses of some kind here if you ride with your shield up .

^this. Plus like I said earlier I have had multiple bouts of Bells Paulsy and I can't close my left eye very well. I went to crack open my visor one time when I was riding after the sun went down and it opened to far (the HJC does not have a detent like the Bell) got some dust in my left eye had to pull over and use the eye drops that I carry with me all the time. IT SUCKED

Fair point, I pulled my stock plastics off before even riding the damn thing :lmao

skorpion*gsxr1000 01-24-2012, 12:40 AM I own the Scorpion helmet and the benefits of this helmet are enough to cover the price, The visor, The anti-fog shields and how easy it is to change shields. Shark is a nice helmet but it is just about the same as any other helmet out there, Just a name. They all pretty much meet the same requirements. Just my 2 cents
