: My GSXR 750 89 project finished
subaroo1 01-17-2012, 03:48 AM This is my GSXR 750 1989 project finished.
It was purchased for $750 AU and it was in a pretty bad way. The carbies were leaking fuel into the engine, oil leaking everywhere, fairing stuffed , crap exhaust, incorrect oil cooler and ignition lock fitted. I have built it to be a weekend ride and not a show winner.
There was a lot stuff I carried out for the first time, like;
1. painting,
2. rebuilding carbies and fitting a dyno jet kit,
3. tuning and balance cabies,
4. valve clearences (shims),
5. making exhaust mid pipe, and
6. panel work.
The engine is a GSXR 750 1985-87 case (705-XXXX engine number) fitted with 91 head (shim adjustment), piston, CDI, rods and clutch (6 spring).
I was quite suprised when I rode it as it has good mid and top end power. I have booked it in for a dyno run on Saturday to check out the air/fuel ratio. I will post the dyno results.
subaroo1 01-17-2012, 04:09 AM I forgot to mention most engine gaskets, all bearings (bearing in shock link were good), fork seals, fork oil and rear shock replaced
Beairsto Racing 01-17-2012, 04:33 AM Nice job!! :cheers
That's quite a list of tasks completed on your own.
Oldschoolfool711 01-17-2012, 09:03 PM That is alot of fixing all by yourself congrats looks good.
SLVR1 01-17-2012, 10:24 PM nice work...looks good in black with the yellow wheels. Have any progress pics to share?
Tchatterton24 01-17-2012, 11:11 PM Congrats on a job VERY well done:cheers Curious on the dyno numbers - make sure you post 'em! Enjoy riding it:biggrin
91 Gixxer 01-17-2012, 11:33 PM Great job restoring man, congrats! :thumbup
mythic44 01-17-2012, 11:42 PM Nice work man. It looks great.
:cheers
subaroo1 01-18-2012, 12:34 AM Here is a couple of photos of the bike at different stages.
oldroadL 01-18-2012, 12:50 AM Looking good! Even though you've done a lot of work, she was a great buy for $750! So that's your weekend rider, are you restoring your J to original, or what are you doing with it?
subaroo1 01-18-2012, 04:01 AM My plan is to do the GSXR 750 88 J to near original condition.
It has a GSXR 750 1990 L engine (716-XXXXXX) and L stock exhaust fitted.
I want to paint it in stock 1988 red and white paint.
I purchased the J for $600 and I was going to use it as spare parts. However, once I cleaned the carbies and got it going it seems to have a good engine, clutch and gearbox so I am going to fix it up.
Here in Victoria Australia bikes and cars over 25 years old that are in a registered club can be register as a classic. for about $100 AU plus club membership the bike can be ridden for no more than 90 day within a 12 month period. See link below.
http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/Home/Registration/PermitsModificationsAndDefects/OtherPermits/ClubPermits.htm
So it should be finished by March 2013 and registered as a classic.
86gixxxer 01-18-2012, 10:59 PM good work.
i'm also curious on the dyno results, since i once had an R705 engine with a 91 750 shim head. what about the carbs?
subaroo1 01-19-2012, 04:17 AM The carbs are BST36SS with GSXR 750 J/K inlet tubes. The head has been port matched to the inlet tubes (no lips of raised edges) I am still using the standard air box and K&N filter (large K&N inlet hole)
MMarsh 01-19-2012, 08:36 AM Nice job. Bike looks great.
Richie Rich 01-19-2012, 02:43 PM Nice work Subaroo! Good to see another gixxer brought back from the dead.
Are you are a member of the VJMC club in Melbourne to gain access to that club rego scheme?
subaroo1 01-20-2012, 09:31 PM I just got back from the dyno.
The bike had 90rwhp and was running very rich from idle all the way to redline.
The guy running the dyno is an ex superbike mechanic and he said to drop the needles 2 notches and back off the mixture screws 1/2 turn. So I'm going do this and see how it goes.
I'm a bit disapointed with 90hp; however, I should pick up a few more HP when it's leaned off a bit.
The bike club I'm going to join for the classic rego is 'Classic & Enthusiasts Motor Cycle Club'
http://www.cemcc.org.au/
subaroo1 01-21-2012, 01:58 AM I just raised the needles one notch and one washer (dyno jet washer) and idle mixture in 1/4 turn.
I took the bike for a quick spin and it seems to be pulling smoother and feels crisper. I checked the plugs and they seem to be nice and clean with a tinge of brown.
I will put it back on the dyno in the next couple of weeks, but for now it does seem to be running better.
I believe the $50 for the dyno run was well worth it.
subaroo1 02-06-2012, 02:22 AM I have now dropped the main jets one size and lowered the needles one notch.
I just took it for a spin and it is going very well. The front started to get loose in second gear 9000rpm (front didn't lift but not far from it)
The carbs have the following configuration;
1. K&N filter large ring,
2. dynojet needles on third notch from top, and
3. Mikuni 130 main jets.
It does feel like it has a bit more power. I will have to put it back on the dyno in the next couple of weeks.
burgerman 02-06-2012, 07:08 AM wow nice touch with the yellow wheels, they really suit it. You pm'd me ages ago about finding a front upper fairing. I just recently found one using findapart and ended up with a nice blue/white upper which came from a wreckers in perth (only about $250). Also Show and Go sent me an email saying they had new replica fibreglass ones for $330 showandgo.com.au, not sure if you still want one but if you do try findapart or show and go.... $750 and $600 for each bike is great buying!
dudul11R 02-06-2012, 12:02 PM good job...very nice...
old gsxr 02-06-2012, 03:18 PM the final finished pics don't seem to download properly for me
the 1st gen 1100's supposedly only put out about a 100rwhp
so 90 is ok
Zip_tie 02-06-2012, 04:37 PM Interested to see the new results after tuning the carbs a little bit. Looks good man.
dangerdog 02-08-2012, 01:24 AM Great job,do you realise how good that bike will look with race numbers on it.
john
wicked86gsxr 02-08-2012, 02:44 PM Awesome job looks great
GSX-R1100 02-08-2012, 03:10 PM Looks good Id like to find a nice 88 750 or 89 1100 to tinker with

subaroo1 02-10-2012, 03:27 AM Thanks for all the nice comments.
I thought I would add one more photo.
Let me know if this one doesn't load for you Old GSXR.
old gsxr 02-10-2012, 05:59 AM thanks -got it ,i like the wheels .are you in the army ?
Bloodrain 02-14-2012, 10:44 AM Too bad it's an "89. I have a full set of bodywork red/white for a '90. The only thing I'm using is the tank. I want a black tank. Maybe if you are interested, could do some trading. Shipping probably stinks to Aus though.

I'd move the bike if I were you cause those things don't play well with others.
Ever see an LAV/AD? We had Gatling guns mounted on them for air defense, but occasionally used them for other stuff. They'd casually disintegrate a position in around 8 seconds. Trust me, they never saw it coming.:lmao
old gsxr 02-15-2012, 05:03 PM Old gsxr, yes I am.
Good onya subaroo :cheers
subaroo1 02-16-2012, 04:51 AM I'd move the bike if I were you cause those things don't play well with others.

No I have never seen a LAV with a Gatling gun.
I do love the Gatling guns/Mini guns, the only problem with them is keeping the rounds up to them.

subaroo1 02-16-2012, 11:33 PM I got cold shivers and a bit of wood watching that.
VERY COOL!!
long_av8r 02-16-2012, 11:35 PM If that gave you wood, you should have seen it in color...
roc_stone2000 02-17-2012, 08:31 PM Neat wheels Dude
:burnout :burnout
oldroadL 02-18-2012, 04:33 AM Done well Subie, looks even better in that shot. What is the exhaust can?
subaroo1 02-18-2012, 05:25 PM Thanks roc_stone. I do like the yellow wheels (yours look good on a H)
I might polishing my wheels, if I end up keeping the bike. I only built it to ride around untill my 750 J is finished.
OldroadL the can is a Megacycle, I purchased it on eBay for $50. It was originally off a ZXR750 90 and came with a stainless steel mid pipe (I only used the flange form the mid pipe).
My bike had aftermarket headers fitted (chrome plated, unknown brand) when I purchased it and I made the mid pipe out of 2 inc mild steel pipe. I made the mid pipe out of fairly small diameter pipe to retain some low and mid range power.
wizz954 02-19-2012, 03:51 AM I have now dropped the main jets one size and lowered the needles one notch.
I just took it for a spin and it is going very well. The front started to get loose in second gear 9000rpm (front didn't lift but not far from it)

I just dyno'd my bike today and using the K&N filter like yours, it was way rich on the main jet at 117.5 with needles at 2nd clip from top. I'm using stock pipe though. 130 mains might be too much still.
subaroo1 02-19-2012, 01:49 PM I used the large velocity ring with the K&N filter?
The K&N filter should have been supplied with two rings that can be fitted.
I tried my K&N filter with the small velocity and stock jetting. It run pretty good. However, it goes better with the current setup.
My bike has 91 (shim head) and 36mm carbs (yours has 38mm carbs)
wizz954 02-20-2012, 05:22 AM That makes more sense if you have 36mm carbs. I'm also using the larger ring.
GarrettSR5 02-24-2012, 12:13 AM Awesome resto. I'm curious what it will put down for power, just don't let Uncle Chopper get in your way.
subaroo1 03-13-2012, 04:07 AM I put my bike on the Dyno again and I only picked up 1.5hp (now 91 RWHP) by dropping the main jet one size and dropping the needles one more notch. However, I did pick up more mid range power.
I now believe the dyno I am using is reading low power outputs.
I witnessed a 2004 Bandit 1200 (Megacycles full system and dyno tuned) pull 90 RWHP.
A 2005 GSXR 750 (Yoshi slip-on) pull 114 RWHP.
I am going to put my other GSXR 750 88 (with 750 1990 engine) on the same dyno and see what that pulls. I'm betting it will be around 90 RWHP similar to my 1989 GSXR 750.
I love the old school oil cooled GSXRs, I bet there won't be many of the later model high reving rockets still going after 20+ years on the road.
old gsxr 03-13-2012, 06:37 AM If that gave you wood, you should have seen it in color...
thanks for the show , good to see along :biggrin with mithbusters and WW2 Americans like blowing the $hit out of things
