Then or now... Let's see what you got, even if you're too fat for it now :flipoff

Just picked up this crazy 80s looking Fieldsheer for $100, it will match the bike to a T once it's all painted... Had to have it of course even if it's just for hanging up next to the bike but it fits me like a glove...

The lower body is absolutely perfect, with my body armor it is a bit tight up top. I'm 5'8 150lbs, I was told by the salesman (don't want to mention any company names and cause butt hurt over it) I would be a size 50, because he was 5'9 160lbs and that is the size in that suit he wore , but he was all wrong, It was so stupid tight I had to return it for a 52. I will say it is a huge improvement on my 12 year old shredded Teknic suit.:biggrin Haven't had the chance to use them at the track though yet, I'll let you know in the spring, but I have nothing but good feelings about them :punk

I was taught to keep the bike up right as much as possible & hang off more (higher speeds) which would = more traction. But this picture was taken in an attempt to get an elbow down, so yea it is a bit over exaggerated. :chucks :lol

I like them a lot... Great suit... We tried some different things on this suit that worked great and are now standard on his suits... Kelcey is great to work with and the price is good... I've known Kelcey for years and have turned a lot of guys onto him with no complaints on quality or price... He'll do anything you want plus has suits "new and used" you can buy off the rack if they fit you... He'll also alter them if needed and they are cheaper than a new custom suit... Give him a try... Awesome, thanks Mark. I was thinking of swinging by with the Fieldsheer suit and having him give it a little "tune up", as it fits me really well - better than any modern off the rack suit I've tried lately. Custom suit will happen sometime later. I'd like to give the business to a local guy and it's good to hear you like his work.

Haha nice! What were you racing back then?

Started on an Interceptor 500 in a Honda contingency series for 2 years then moved to the Hurricane(CBR600) after that. Raced the Hurricane in the 24hr race at Willow with Wes Cooley and some other guys and finished 5th overall. We were really happy about that! Wes was about a second or so faster per lap then most of us-pretty impressive. We were the first stock production bike to finish, in front of all the 1100's and 750's!

Raced some GSXR750's as well owned by other guys in sprint races as well as shorter endurance stuff(4-6hr).

Taught in a roadracing school with Wes for about 2 years during that time as well. Enjoyed the endurance stuff more then the sprint races but the teaching gig was the most enjoyable of all.

Trust me... DAYGLOW WAS IN!!!!!!!!:biggrin

Well, I just bought a set of Z Leathers used for $125. They will be here by Friday I think, but I don't particularly care for the colors, well, at least one of them. Its a tri color 1 piece suit and its orange, white, and green. I want to see if I can get the green re-dyed to black. Is that possible? If not, I'll just have to live with it, but for $125, it was hard to pass up.

Here's a photo of the suit I just purchased. I really hate the green, but if it were changed to black, the suit would look pretty nice. I've seen some re-dye kits online, but I'm not so sure about them. I will either send them back to Z Custom, or see if there's a local guy that can do it. Maybe NJK?

Eric, Z custom is in Santa Ana now(used to be in HB). I would advise that you take the time to have them look at the suit and see what they think.

To answer your other question, I really liked the Z suit and the quality was/is awesome. On the plus side as well, they are super nice people and their service has always been excellent.

Yeah, the seller is in HB, and he said he would either ship, or he would drop it off at Z so they could clean and alter it for me. I may just hop on the bike and take a ride over there. I think changing the green part to black will really change the look of that suit in a very positive way.

Hey Eric contact Barnacle Bill. He can definitely do that. I sent him my old suit and had him change some colors and take a little bit out of the shoulders and crotch for a more custom fit and he was prety cheap and outstanding workmanship. Also he cleans them but all he does is throw them in a washing machine, takes them out and lays them flat for a couple days, right before they are about to dry rub some non scented hand cream into them all over. Works awesome. Those Z leathers are worth putting some $$ into them. Great suit

When I was buying mine I spared no expense. You can't stop mid air and put better leathers on :). Plus talking to BB he said the red stuff he see's in leathers "is not ketchup". It made my stomach turn. I went down at Daytona and slid a loooong time. I couldn't imagine having cheap leathers on.

Yeah, there was a Syed suit that I emailed a guy about as well as a Vanson. I tried to find a used BB but didn't come accross one. Those were really my pics for a suit along with NJK. I preferred a suit that was made out here in SoCal though due to the convenience of having them altered locally by the people that made them in the first place. I still may buy the Syed's though if the guy gets back with me. They seemed like a pretty good deal and they were the right size. There was another Z suit that looked real nice and would match a Barry Sheene r/b/y paint scheme rather nicely, but they were too small - a size 40 which is what I have now but they were just as cheap as these and listed as near new. I might ask Z to see how much they could alter those to get them to fit and if it's possible, I'll grab that suit too.

Hey Eric FYI I used to race with a guy that had a SYED suit and he crashed so many times in it and the suit help up really good. I always liked them after seeing that.

The suit I sent to BB to alter was too small and he tailored it to fit perfect. He also told me that you can use a Pilates ball to stretch a suit out slightly up top. I did this and it actually worked well on an old suit. Moisten the suit, put the ball in where you want more room and pump it up and let it sit for an hour or so. Be careful though as you can go too far and be prepared for crazy looks from your wife :)

SCTA rules specify leather only, no synthetics, stretch panels or perforations. The "all cow, all the time" rule was the a result of a couple of incidents where bikes were on fire. Even with emergency vehicles present, it will take several minutes for them to reach the rider if they are down at the 5 mile. You can bail or ride it out.

I can't remember who made mine, I've had them for @12 years. They are kind of old fashioned, thick and very pleasant to wear in mid-August on the salt.

It's not so much the fire that does the damage, it's your sweat boiling under the leather. I wear Carbon X under my leathers.

The Z Leathers showed up yesterday but they aren't going to work for me. They were made for someone taller and skinnier (was told by the seller that they were made for someone 5'10" and 190lbs, I'm 5'9" and 185lbs) and Z's said that the cost to modify them is going to be more than it is worth. They feel like they were made for someone taller than 5'10" though. The knee and elbow armor are too low, and the torso is too long. My feeling tells me this suit was made for someone around 6 foot and 190 lbs because they would be skinnier where I am fatter, and thier limbs would be longer. Oh well, it was worth a try. I have another suit coming in tomorrow that is supposed to be a 44 (I think it is one of Syed's ready made suits) and I'm hoping it fits because if not, I have no suit.

VANSON sucks from my experience. Being from the Northeast they were supposed to be the shizzel. They have crappy customer service and don't stand behind the product. I had a zipper fail and didn't contact them right away and they refused to warranty it. They would not even work with me on repair costs and complained about overseas competition and online competition. A product of a former day. Stay away.

I agree with the comments on Barnacle Bill. Straight shooter

Yeah, I may have to call him tomorrow because I really like the suit other than the green. The leather is real nice and the padding is great. If I can get it altered for $500 or less, I'd still be at nearly half the price of a new one - well, a new custom suit anyway.

Another +1 on Barnacle Bill here!

The JR suit on the left up there I crashed in a couple month ago and ripped open a nice hole in the right hip area. I had him close up the hole, fix a little carnage on the right forearm and shoulder, cut a little extra bunched up material out of the lower leg, install that speed hump you see there, and wash the suit too. Great pricing and pretty quick turn around too.

.....just another quick comment, that MotoGP (Kangaroo Compression suit) suit in the middle there is BY FAR the most comfortable, lightest weight suit I've ever had off the shelf.

It's thinner but Kangaroo has better abrasion resistance so it doesn't need to be as thick as cow-hide, and it still has all the same CE rated armor that the JR leather ones have so that's a non-issue, and I wear a Knox Aegis 8-plate, might add the chest protector this season too. I've read a few questionable reviews about that MotoGP suit, but most of the people that went down in them reported that it held up well. As far as comfort goes it's 20x more comfortable and far lighter in weight than any old school heavy ass cowhide suit I've worn.

No crash is predictable, and ANY suit from a piece of shit off the rack on sale one up to a $3000 custom suit could blow open in the right kind of crash. Granted I've seen it happen alot less in the high dollar stuff, but I've still seen it happen.

After all that talk of being done buying used suits yesterday I bought this on Ebay last night :suicide. My boss has this suit (different colors) in a 54 and it fits great in the waist but it's a wee bit too short for my frame and a little tight in the shoulders when in riding position. This one's a 56 so fingers crossed...

That's a nice coloured suit Dutch. I wear a size 44 U.S./54 Euro, ... if I saw that suit in my size, I'd grab it for sure. It's the kind of suit I could wear on a bike, and not be concerned with screaming out "LOOK AT ME - I'M A BIKER BOY". You know what I mean right?!?

I think I have to look for an older suit, a little more relaxed... either that or a single coloured suit. Racing colours for the track... nice suit for the street.

I'm 6'2" 205lbs with long arms. In most brands, 54 is perfect in waist and chest but just an inch or two too short in the back (especially with a back protector) and the arms.
I know I can have the waist taken in some on this suit if it's too wide but these old Italian suits tend to run a bit slim so I'm hoping it's not necessary, plus it's gotta fit with a back protector. It's already on the way and in CA so should have it soon. I'm a sucker for the white/blue! :punk

JB I have a nice black 2-piece for the street, but I've been wearing the Fieldsheer in the OP (on my 74 Kawi) and love it.

Long, that Syed looks wayyy nice! Glad to hear that fits good. The Fieldsheer is the jacket version of my suit. There's a one piece on ebay for $150 in that exact color scheme. I have the white/blue version and it's doable but tight on me (back/shoulders) in that exact size. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Fieldsheer-leather-motorcycle-race-suit-size-46-56-Red-White-Black-/270907440037?pt=Apparel_Merchandise&vxp=mtr&hash=item3f13577ba5#ht_500wt_934

For any alterations I also recommend Barnacle Bill. I had to buy my Komodo leathers a little long to fit my shoulders and chest. Bill shortened both the arms and legs and now they fit great. He also added a side fat panel in black to give me room to move. Crash tested and no burn throughs, tears or seam damage.

Well, I listed the Z's on ebay so if I sell them before the Fieldsheer auction ends, I'll buy them for use as a comfy street suit.

long_av8r
02-14-2012, 04:44 PM
I pulled the Z's from auction because I'm keeping them. I talked to BB and he can make this suit fit me for $175, and then for another $25 he'll redye it, and for another $75, he'll add a speed hump. With all that, he said he'd poke some holes in it for me as well no charge. So, about $300 total for all of it, and given that the suit is in great shape, I decided to keep it and get the work done. Having said that, today I went out and talked to a few tailors and was eventually sent to Rancho Tailors in Murrieta off of Murrieta Hot Springs Rd. They can also do all the alterations, as well as the perforations, and they too said they could do it for $175 - but they said they would not dye it. There is also a place off Jefferson called Tim's Shoe Repair that can repair crash damaged leathers. So, if you are local and need some work done, there are a few places that can do it. I would imagine if you do enough research, you could find similar places in your area. I'm still on the fence though. I would like to get them altered locally, but I would also like to use a known trusted source.

That's great Long. I think if it were me I would use a guy that does alterations specifically for roadracers and knows what parts of the suit/stitching that can come apart from experience. My buddy hit the deck and I saw his suit come apart after a slide. Gut churning. Good luck man:cheers

Yeah, you are probably right, and I will likely have BB do everything. I want to also get flex panels put in above the knees in addition to the kevlar in crotch, behind knees, and under arms, as well as the hump. I may even have him put "long_av8r" on the back with a target/crosshairs under it. Still, with all that, and the dye, I'm likely going to be under $500 for everything and it will be just as good a custom suit as a new one.
