For the 7-speed manual Porsche offers a very sporty gears 1 through 6 while the 7th gear comes with a long ratio for improved fuel-economy. Performance is not sacrificed at all as the gear ratios up to the 6th are fairly short and top speed is, indeed, reached in 6th gear and not the top gear.

That sounds miserable to drive.
6 gears on a street car is plenty.
Shifting that often on the track sucks even worse.
My GTO has "excessive gearing." It's a 6spd, but it's close gearing so 2 and 3 are useless on the street. I'd rather have those two combined into one. The difference between 5 and 6 is "meh" too. I can merge on to the highway at 45mph in 6th gear. 5th is useless.
I generally just shift 1, 4, 6. I wish the gearing was wider, like the Camaros/Firebirds and Corvette.
I'm sure the 7 gears is similar.
you mis-read it, or didnt read it at all.
1-6 is for street, city, etc
7 is for highways etc

LMAO, comparing a GTO to a Porsche.
And don't get all butthurt, I once owned two 06 GTOs. Decent cheap toy car, but not any sort of performance barometer, especially not to be used to gauge the effectiveness of a Porsche transmission.

Yeah, how dare you draw a comparison from a 345-394hp Porsche to a 400hp GTO?
