: Some stuff on the 98 CCT issues

Ok Tom gave me the old Auto CCT and there is something really wrong with the Suzuki Auto CCT for the 98-99 models.
The newest auto CCT I had, I put about 90 miles on it and it blew. After taking a good look at it something is fucked with these.
The pin can be pushed in (which it shouldn't do) by hand. Every once in a while that pin actually does it's job and catches to prevent it from retracting.
The newer auto tensioner is a bit more beefy compared to the older ones I have been through but at least in my case this tensioner is bad news.
My mechanic had a 97/600 engine in his shop at the same time and it's auto CCT looks a bit different from the 98. It holds just fine.
If you have a 98 and need a new Auto tensioner I would reccomend the APE manual one but if you want a Auto I would try and get one for a 97/600. The mechanic said he has not seen nearly as many problems with the 97 than the 98's.

I will see if I can take apart this tensioner and take some pictures. It is pretty wierd how it will not hold.

Just a update for anyone who cares.

Fact still is, that if you run your bike high in the RPM range, you are better off with a manual CCT... Every auto CCT could fail. I am not saying that it will, but I dont want to find out the hard way if it does... images/icons/smile.gif

How often do you have to pull the cover off and adjust the manual one though, and how do you know when to do it?

I normaly do it when I change my filter. You can tell since it starts to make a very aparent noise. It is hard to discribe, but you will know it the first time you hear it.

gixxerfreak, with your manual tensioner is it noisy all the time? i have had one in there for the last 14000km's and it just get adjusted every 6000-8000kms when bike is serviced, i also heard others do the same, is that normal?

It does make a bit more noise then a auto CCT that is working correct.. But A LOT LESS then a auto CCT that isnt working...

Most people dont ever hear the noise from the maunal CCT. That is how quite it is.

I replaced the stock '97 automatic CCT with a '99 spec Suzuki automatic CCT. It had a beefier body and a bigger head to push on the slide. Replaced the rear and top slide (didn't drop the engine to get the front). The one I replaced doesn't seem to be slipping, and from what I can tell, the bike didn't get any quieter with the new one, although the peace of mind was worth it.

Valves are in spec, no metal flakes in the oil, and no noticeable decrease in performance or gas mileage. If anyone in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area has a manual tensioner in a 96-98 750 I'd like to see if I can hear any difference - email me if interested.
