I just got a 98 GSXR 600, and I had it sitting for 2-3 days, and I went to start it last night, and it did not want to start, even w/the choke on.
I finally got it started but it seemed to run real rough. Has anyone had this problem, or know how to fix it. Thanks in advance.

Mine wont start after leaving it for a few days as well. I end up clutch starting it.

I press the button as usual, and it goes crank crank crrrrrrrr..... dash goes blank, lights go dim, liek the battery is dead.

Ive tested the battery, and it's arond 12.5V, and it's not leaking any charge. The symptoms is pointing to a faulty/worn starter motor.

Because, during "normal", starts it takes a few more cranks than other bikes.

Just giving possible ideas, especially if your symptoms are the same as mine. images/icons/grin.gif

does it crank fast, slow?

does it seem to start, but dies instantly,

what all mods are done to the bike, what was the temp outside, did the bike sit outside, etc?

Plugs are fine. It'll start first go if ive ridden it the day b4.

PLus, with electrical, it's either connected or not.

Im suspecting the brushes in the starter motor are worn, hence the relatively more difficult starts on my bike images/icons/frown.gif

It's acting like it's draining too much current.... is there a possiblitly ? images/icons/confused.gif

When I try to start it, it cranks fast, but it wants to start but doesnt. After a miniute or so, I can get it to start. The bike has a full Hindle exhaust w/jet kit. It was about 40 degrees outside, and it was in my garage. I was thinking it could possibly be the plugs due to the bike has almost 7500 miles on it. Thanks.

a battery at 12.5 volts isn't at full capacity.....it should be around 13 if the battery's in very good shape. a few fractions of a volt may not seem like a lot to you, but it makes a world of difference.

put it this way.....even though these are nominally 12 volt batteries, if your battery tests at 12 volts at the terminals, it's effectively dead. there are 6 cells in a 12v battery.....each one is supposed to have very close to 2.2 volts of potential.....so a fully charged battery should put out around 13.2v, not 12. (at least, this is the case with modern maintenance free gel batteries....the battery in my bike puts out 13.3v. older unsealed batteries should be a little lower, like around 12.8v fully charged.)

from the way you've described your bike behaving when you try to start it, it sounds like your battery's shot.....the dash going blank and the lights going very dim are indications of a weak battery.

try hooking up your bike to a good car battery instead (use the car battery in place of the bike battery), and see if the bike starts easily.

nick,

change the plugs.

I just got a new battery for mine (thinking this might be the problem) and it has 13.5v at full charge (when I take it off the tender).

Oh yea graemlins/idea.gif , [hooking up to car batt] thanx for that Jeff.

Ive forgotten about this testing procedure, cause ive been riding the bike everyday and it's started every morning.

Easter Long weekend: Forecast... rain, shower, rain.... time to sort this problem out graemlins/thumbup.gif

Hopefully, ill post a report in a few days. Have to not start the bike today for "symptoms" to occur...

I went and replaced the plugs, the old ones were a bit out of spec but they looked ok. After I replaced the plugs it still took a bit for the bike to start. Could it possibly be that the carbs needs to be cleaned and adjusted?

could be... could be bad wires... could be your battery... could be a crank sensor... images/icons/grin.gif Lots of things it could be... It is hard to say without seeing it first hand.

can you push start it to rule out a mech. problem or is it clearly electrical?
